Ehlers Danlos and Kinesiophobia | Ahead Of The Curve
🆓 - FREE At-Home Exercises For Scoliosis: thescoliotherapist.com/free-at-home-exercises
Do you have a chronic condition in addition to scoliosis? If so, you’re not alone. It’s actually quite common for people with scoliosis to experience other conditions that cause chronic pain, physical limitations, and mental health challenges.
In this episode of Ahead of the Curve, I dive deep with Kim Moscatello, a woman who not only understands these struggles through her own journey with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome but also empowers others facing chronic conditions. We explore the realities of living with Ehlers-Danlos, the surprising mental and emotional benefits of exercise (even when it feels impossible), and Kinesiophobia - the fear of movement that can hold us back. We also discuss safe and effective movement practices like Pilates and yoga, even with hypermobility. Kim shares warning signs to watch that might signal Ehlers-Danlos or other hypermobility conditions. Additionally, we'll explore how the food we eat can impact our chronic illness symptoms, giving us valuable tools to feel better.

I was diagnosed at 16 and I’m 50 now. I had a total hysterectomy at 47. I have fairly recently developed neuropathy in my feet and shins, neck stiffness, and pretty severe sciatica on my right side. I also have osteopenia. Thank God I can still sleep pretty comfortably. I am a high school teacher and I wear a back support belt religiously. It helps. Being sedentary makes it worse, which for me is in the summer and on breaks from school. I wish I had been more active before menopause because since then, I have noticed a significant increase in my discomfort levels. Heed my warning people: be as active as you can before middle age. ❤

Kerry should have a "gadget'" sale exclusive to Ahead of The Curve or her followers. RE: mother in law saving and sharing things, when I had my first PRECIOUS child, my MIL brought me used, 30 + yr. old cloth diapers to use on MY new baby. IDK, maybe I'm just ungrateful. RE: Genetics, My paternal grandmother had significant kyphosis and my younger son has sever Sheurmanns in his upper back. He also has a side mild scoliosis and a 45 degree compensation curve in his lower back. Re: Kerry's relatives, I believe my scoliosis comes from my Late in Life dx of hEDS (and genetics). Sounds like Kerry related to some of the notable comorbideties common to EDS in her relatives. Re: Dr. Huckaby - that's a fascinating theory re: not healing after dx. I can relate on both sides, since I was dx so young with scoliosis and had 12" fusion at age 10, or because I'm so stubborn, I never acknowledged my condition, even when girls teased me or avoided me in swim team because my scar was fresh and my curvature is so evident, despite fusion, I just carried on, I dove, I got a horse and I never worried about having children. However, the struggles have been there throughout. (Probably exacerbated by the hEDS which I didn't know was a thing ) On the other hand, ( re: Dr. Huckaby related to dx and healing) I still float the river of De-nial, but since dx with hEDS and learning ALL that is related to it, including scoliosis, my determination and drive HAS wained. I now DO more often acknowledge symptoms instead of battling through. It's like the Dx of hEDS has given me an answer to many symptoms, but also an excuse to give them their due, ie: tell myself "this is because or I can't because or I'm sick because - and those thoughts are all true, it's just that before dx, I would just push through with more of a thought of 'I don't know why I'm sick/hurt, just battle on." Discovering my dx with a geneticist was at first a relief, as it answered so many life long questions and had a name, but the very next reveal was that "there is no cure/ treatment," which leaves you with "WTH." and a feeling of defeat. I'm gonna find Dr. Huckaby and share with her. Re: Chidren, My first child was 6 weeks early, locked at zero station 1. because my torso is so short, and 2. my sciatica was so bad in pregnancy I was in PT and their PT for me was to put myself in child's pose, face down for stretches of time, trying to stretch out the the lower spine but ultimately completely squishing my baby into zero station. He was literally premature because he was stuck, didn't move for two days prior and being born saved his life. My body ejected him to save him I think. With my second child my pelvic separated early (most likely due to hEDS) so I was semi bed ridden for much of the term and he was full term - again, with a limited torso, there wasn't much room, I'm little and he was 8 lbs. These are the things that never entered my mind as fear or even in the throws of it, I never thought "this is because of my back, I just took each event as it came. Re: Swimwear I have yet to EVER find a swim suit that fits. One piece is always too long in the Torso and like you, my top is DDD+ but the rest of me is not. SO Frustrating ! Also, my convex curve pushes my shoulder blade out so much that tops (bras) want to migrate or somehow, that cup size seems different than the left. I NEED support but recently I had to abandon all underwire due to extreme GERD, I have a hiatal hernia from hEDS and short torso, but since I trashed the underwire, I'm much better. ? ? ? RE: Traveling with couch cushions, I travel with a seat size wedge - I HAVE TO, it's like a booster seat because my torso is so short but also I need the angle for my lower back. Only left it on a plane once ( $$ ) Re: Dead hang, and thump gun, I have a 12" fusion, I have been told to never use the inversion table ever due to hEDS. I have an inversion table and I miss hanging so much. I haven't had an issue using it in the distant past, but I am afraid to use it since I was advised not to. Then again, I recently woke up with a neck vertebrae rotated and three rib heads out of place from simply laying in bed. Crying in pain a kin to being in labor - no dead hang. I succumbed and allowed my hubby to take to me to a chiropractor. I was terrified but Dr. was not and he quickly (really terrifyingly ) put the ribs back and adjusted my bone on bone neck, he then used a thera gun. It was very scary but I have been "stable" since. I get vestibular vertigo periodically, it comes on unrelated to vibration, but I also have a thump type massager that I use on my back and shoulders and I personally have yet to have vertigo come on after using it. It does make one very itchy after. re: impact activities, I was never educated as to what would happen to my spine BEYOND the fission (above and bellow T4 - T12) and that is extreme wear and tear, equating to advanced/early DDD so my neck is bone on bone at age 60, not painful, just limiting in rotation and movement. Had I an understanding, I would have avoided the amount of diving I did with impact on my head I would have focused better on core and strengthening supporting muscles and less on jumping around with not much thought, horse back riding, rollerskating, cheerleading, I say that , BUT I was a child and I'm glad I didn't have mental limits or hang ups or I would not have played with abandon and enjoyed my time so freely. Yes, I am paying for it now a bit. Not having scoliosis "limit" my life, I also did not consider my career choices. I licensed as a hair stylist in my 20's and herniated a disc in the lower S spine within the first two years. So my question is, WITH fusion, Chiropractor or NO Chiropractor? Treatment got me out of pain right away, in the past I have gone up to 6 weeks in agony and not even able to dress or pull up my own pants, take a breath, yawn, sneeze. With hEDS and Spinal Fusion, the idea of Chiro is seriously terrifying to me, but I know he helped me.

FINALLY found my way to a TMJ clinic and already investigated oralfacial myotherapy: didn't see how just getting an appliance would be appropriate. I've had some sinking suspicions that there were interconnections I need to consider. I've a mild tongue tie: the tongue thrust seems to be more of an issue, if caused by the tongue tie. But I've also got Scheurmann's kyphosis, milder-side scoliosis -- and strabismus (IV palsy.) Burst into tears just now when I found your video. I don't know if I'm a candidate for having my frenulum released, but if it will help the kyphosis/scoliosis and therefore my neck, that CANNOT do anything but help my strabismus. Sorry it's taken so much to get to this point -- but glad you're here, and posting.

Locating a specialist or therapist who knows scoliosis and can instruct you in what you should be doing and what you shouldn't be doing is difficult. It's not easy to find that person! Most physical therapists aren't experts in this area.

You’re correct it shouldn’t be so hard! It’s a combination of people assuming they know when they actually don’t and also over complicating scoliosis.
