    Your CFI's hand near the cyclic control don't make you nervous? There is one PIC and it feels as though at a moment's notice he will take control of the heli without proper control handoff.

    • @rotarywing
      @rotarywing Před 7 dny

      Even though I am PIC, I am also logging dual instruction, and because it's an instructional flight, the CFI is also logging hours as PIC. As an instructional flight, I am aware the CFI may take control at any time, but he will say something like, "My controls." Even as PIC on an instructional flight, I need to be prepared to release the controls and say, "Your controls." This behavior needs to be practiced from the beginning of flight instruction, and should certainly be automatic at my stage. There should be no hesitation or fighting for control on my part. There have been several recent crashes/fatalities where students did not release controls and the CFI could not overpower the student. It's very dangerous and a CFI's worst nightmare if a student does not release the controls. Also, the CFI may many times be "on the controls" and provide control input to help the student. We talked about this in this video. When I was flaring in one of the autos, the rotor rpm was rising and I pulled a little collective and ballooned. In a previous video, the CFI instead pushed forward on the cyclic to kill the rotor rpm rise instead of ballooning. I don't mind the CFI being near the controls or lightly on the controls. The only thing that bothers me is if the CFI is heavy on the controls and preventing me from making a correct input, usually because the CFI is not paying attention (I haven't had this problem with Ryan, the CFI in this video).

      I have never done an auto all the way to the ground, but my CFIs try to teach to minimize forward speed and descent rate by the end of the flare in case the ground is not flat or has obstructions or you will roll it into a ball. Ryan was saying at the end of one of these autos that it’s hard to zero out the airspeed in a R22 so will likely have to run-on or skid (unless there’s a strong headwind).

    • @rotarywing
      @rotarywing Před 11 měsíci

      Yes, I believe so, for 2 servo 90 degree swashplates, not 3 servo 120 degree swashplates, but the tandem in the video is not mine. Jim Davey has since made some more adjustments to his Ikon 2. He has a thread on HeliFreak under Multi Rotor Helicopters - Tandem, "Twinn Rexx with Ikon and 6 servos," and ScaleRChelis, "A baby CH-46 in Wood."

    Great vid , this CFI is really good , im curious about her vuichard recovery, im actually gonna reach out to the DPE im using for for my CFI practical about what she wants. Ive always been taught , pull power right cyclic,left pedal ,then forward for airspeed, and your cfi, says not needed. Which she is right ,once u sidestep u eliminate at least 1 of the conditions for settling. Also i hear u saying second onset in settling , how do u break down settling ? less then etl, more then 300',applied power . Instead of saying loss etl,300 foot descent rate , applied power u are calling on set? Also u did great ,when she threw in there surprise simulated engine failures , especially the second one when u were in a heavy work load , and talking , great ,quick responses . great flying

    • @rotarywing
      @rotarywing Před rokem

      My CFI, Paul, asked me to call out first vibration ( around loss of ETL) then second deeper vibration as onset of VRS to start recovery. He always said the VSI has a delay so by the time it reads -300 fpm, I'm actually descending faster. This was the first time I've heard that I can stay in a hover after Vuichard recovery. But good to know it's an option. Usually would want to see airflow over trim strings to verify above ETL as she mentioned with standard or legacy VRS recovery. My first CFI to teach me Vuichard recovery, Jacob, had me continue translation to the right until the trim strings were alive, then right pedal turn to continue in the direction 90 degrees from entry. No other CFI I had did that. So obviously different ways the Vuichard recovery is taught. It's been a while since I left the airport pattern and my flying showed I was a bit rusty and got behind the aircraft. I did not realize my airspeed was low before she called the second simulated engine failure. Fortunately, my first reaction seems to have changed from "deer in the headlights freeze" to lower the collective and stabilize autorotation, then look around for a place to land. Still not staying ahead enough to have been aware of potential landing areas before the call. Thanks for the comments!

    Great video. I've always been impressed with helicopters. Yrs. ago at the Vacaville nut tree they were giving rides. We were the only ones that did. It was so fun. When I was 12, I got to fly with the TV stars of the TV show "Whirlybirds" the pilots were Ed Fuderich, Bob Gilbreath, and Harry Hauss of National Helicopter Service, Inc. My mother, sister and I went to buy groceries. They had a drawing for Helicopter rides. The helicopter was parked in the cleared parking lot. My sister was picked, but she was afraid, so my mother volunteered me. Best day ever. Again, great job to both of you. PS I live in Napa, CA. Thanks

      @@lookingforwookiecopilot I have not flown solo since getting my rating. Mainly because I haven’t been flying enough, but also when I have been able to fly, I want to practice autos which are not allowed without a CFI when renting. I know it may sound strange to you, but it wasn’t my goal to get a pilot license to go fly somewhere. I’m completely happy to fly in the pattern or even just hover, and I like flying with a CFI. But maybe if I fly more often, I’ll try to go for a spin by myself, at least around the pattern. Almost did that yesterday because my CFI had to reschedule my reservation.

    Great flight, awesome autos very controlled, smooth perfect. S turns on spot flying commercial standards easy. good hover autos ,running landing and slopes. You are flying commercial level, no need to question or doubt yourself. Really liked this instructor he was good especially in his instruction with slopes ,left skid, im gonna steal some of his explanation for for my CFI training :) Yeah you should do ground for commercial, honestly its about the same as private ,maybe bit more detail but from what i can see from flying i bet your past CFI taught commercial standard level for ground. Only thing is know what privileges u have as commercial pilot and i bet you can do it . Im sure its frustrating not having steady CFI and have to keep proving to each guy you can fly , ,If u were my student,i would sign u off for flight part for commercial easily. I see same problem everywhere ,certain people with noise complaint, guess they figured buying house near airport why would planes and helicoipters fly and train there. :) good deviation ,not flying same over and over. We had a class g used to practice at, same issue , we changed to higher traffic patterns, change every circuit still didnt matter, Airport belonged to township i guess right person knew someone so ,out of blue started charging $ 15 every single circuit so fly 4 patterns $60 , so obviously stopped going there , but only applied to helicopters :( Well keep up good work fly safe

      Thanks! The CFI is the owner of Helico Sonoma, and of course, a very experienced pilot and instructor. It was really great flying with him, but I don't know if I will be able to fly with him a lot as he is usually busy with other things at the company. Thanks for your kind comments about commercial. I would like to have all the skills and experience for a commercial rating, but not sure the budget will allow for everything required for the rating. Mainly just trying to work toward proficiency for the annual flight review. I'm feeling I need to fly more than once a month to maintain proficiency.
