Buy Asus, get Asus quality. I have an Asus TUF 3080 TI that was randomly crashing. I eventually realized that the Hot Spot would go to 103c+. I repasted the card and now the hot spot max temps is barely 70-75c. There was barely no thermal paste on the GPU. Typical ASUS quality control.

I have often heard that excess thermal paste can lead to adhesion between the CPU and cooler with possible socket pin damage upon forced removal (turning the computer back to heat the paste is then recommended). I suspect the problem here is that the excess squeezed out paste tends to dry out and harden. It's unfortunate that this area is hard to see and clean.

ROLF... basics of thermodynamic is saying... Hello. When you add another layer of 'something' .. ALWAYS thermoconductivy will be WORST. Because heat coming between two layers, have some 'obstacles' to overcome. This is 'why' when you do thermoisolation of you house, You doing this by put around 3 layers. In EU we use often bricks, then styro, then final render. Often in countries when is colder.. we put 2 layers of bricks, but with little space between them. And main role of thermopaste or thermopads are, to fill air gaps between CPU and Cooler.

Knowing the answer early on, it made me curious how you came to your conclusion, so I ended up watch the entire rest of the video (which is really well-put together, might I add). If you had the answer at the end, I likely would have just skipped right to it, and would have been much less informed while not giving your content the watch-time it deserves. So here's a follow-up question to this. I'm starting my new build shortly and I'll be using 3 m.2s (2x2TB 990 Pro in raid 0, 1x1TB 990 Pro) and I have some Thermalright 0.5mm thermal pads, as well as some 1mm to cut and replace the stock stuff from my mobo. Since the controller sits a tad higher than the NAND on each drive I'll be using, would you still recommend to only cover the controller, or is it worth trying to lightly cover the NAND with the thinner pads? ROG X670e-Extreme with included heat sink plates. TIA!

the most important step is to never go with every trend. people use i9s and stuff because they want 4k gaming. with gpus using 500 watt on their own. i play on an older pc who takes 120w max. i game between 720p and 1080p. 4k gaming is just too power consuming. yet people will go with every trend. if 8k comes up people will buy gaming pcs that use 1300w power draw. soon every pc will need its own powerplant.

Power (and thermal) cycling is what will usually kill electronics. I pretty much never power my PC off (since c. 2012, now on the 3rd build), never had a _single_ hardware failure in that time, not even an HDD. The one from 2012 (P8Z77 / 2500K, later 3770K), according to the SMART data on a couple of WD Greens running in RAID 0, was running for 6.5 years of 7.5 years before I upgraded. It drew c. 45W at the wall, the current one under 40W.

I have tried several different methods and the one that works the best is to make sure you get some between the heatsink and the CPU. I just squeeze out a fat pea sized blob in the center and mount the heatsink. I intentionally add what I think is a little too much. I've got lots of 91% alcohol and paper towels if I accidentally make a mess. I used to fuss over stuff like this and actually since socket A it really hasn't mattered.
