You have no idea how helpful it would be to lead with your ZONE and GEOGRAPHY somewhere in the top of your 'how to' area.
UK south east. Zone 8-9 we don't really have zones in UK as we are just a small island with a temperate climate. It's not like the US where you vary vastly. I will try to remember though.
@@JillBretherton Thank you, Jill. It really is helpful. Yes I am familiar with the UK climate but popping it right out there off the bat could stop people from making mistakes.
What zone are you out of interest?
Wow Jill the garden is looking amazing, I think we will need to start growing all slug resistant plants next time 😮. Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for being us along in the garden tour, Ali ☔️☔️🇨🇦
It's certainly full of flowers. If anything, a little too full I'm thinking ha ha. Have a great weekend your self as always. See you again soon. 🇬🇧🇨🇦🌸
It's better to grow slug 🐌 resistant plants than being disappointed.
I agree. and grow extra too.
That's what I've been doing yesterday and today ✂️🌹
Mine are never ending at the mo. I love it though!
You don't need to let the seeds ripen on the stems?
You’re right I have some ripening on sweet peas I had in a vase.
💛💛💜💜💚💚🧡🧡🤍🤍
Hi. My marigolds are eaten by snails every time
This is why I said add your comment. Mine are never eaten. even the ones in partial shade. How strange! Could they be eaten by something else do you think?
Which shop are they from?
I get mine from Home Bargains here in UK. They're really cheap.
@@JillBretherton thanks! I'll maybe try Poundland I'm taking your advice about starting seedlings now for next year 👍
Great. you will save so much money. I don’t have a poundland that close to me but they are bound to have them in there.
Wait, when we used to use sheets? What do you use on the bed? I use sheets still so I'm wondering if I'm behind the times.
I actually do use sheets on the bottom but they have those elasticated corners now. And hello over to you in Texas. What a pleasure. Thanks for watching.
@@JillBretherton i really enjoy your videos, and learn from them even though our climate is different. And I LOVE your garden! I'm a huge animal lover too so I like seeing your dogs and cats and we also both love the birds. Sometimes I think, if we lived nearby we would be friends. :-)
@@lisaawild Aw, that’s so kind and being friends would be nice. What a lovely comment. I love seeing my dogs too. Every time I see them it’s a joy even though they follow me around all day. 🤣 🇬🇧 🇺🇸

What was the name of the white rose? It's so pretty. Thanks for this helpful video.
I wish I knew. Not only is it very pretty it so freshly scented like soap. It's beautiful but I bought it years ago, lost the tag and havn't seen or smelled another like it since.
wow beautiful video thanks for sharing
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
What would you sow in the garden in Connaught, Ireland? The weather can be very dry or torrential rain and it's plagued by slugs in this garden. Do you start these flowers in trays or straight into the garden? I think that this garden is in the south of England. It's such a difference in conditions. Thanks for the video.
I am actually going to do a slug resistant plant video. I have been pretty good with slugs and snails since going organic but this winter and spring was so wet I lost so many plants including most of my dahlias. My honeywort, campanula, valerian, sweet peas actually, foxgloves and sweet rocket seemed to all be slug resistant. I lost all my sunflowers and dahlias though. I am putting together a more in depth video so watch out for it. I alwasy start them in trays (watch my stop wasting your money on plastic plant pots it shows you how I do mine) because I have more control over the young plants then until they are strong enough to survive. Your climate is probs similar as we are also quite dry in south east with bouts of torrential rain when we get it.
A very timely and informative post, thank you for sharing 🥰
Thanks for watching
First things first: Your Campanula/Honeywort combination is exquisite ✨😭😍 - I also love (albeit prefer) the white Valerian Ruber 💖. Your video was amazingly informative and fun to see so thank you for taking the time to share it ❤️💖🥰.
I am so glad you enjoyed it. The campanula and honeywort were a triumph this year and I will definitely be growing both again next year. They just keep going and going. Thanks for watching.

Sweetheart 🥹🌿🥰
I will update my blog on my website so you can read it online.
Thanks for such a clear video. Can I ask, once the plant has grown can the potted up version go into a place where an old dead bush was?
Certainly it can be potted up to grow on like any rose but I have heard that roses don't do well where other roses have grown before. To remedy that I would leave your new rose to grow on for at least a year in pot and enrich and compost the area you want the rose to go in. Maybe grow something else there for a year before planting it in the same spot.
Do you have some dahlias planted? They make great focal flowers and I have both those I bought as tubers and those as I grow from seeds.
Yes. I have Dahlias but havn't planted them out yet due to slugs!
This is great I'm going to try this! Just as an FYI I also do this in the fridge and freezer when I need to put away tins and they don't quite fit on the shelf. I fold them up like that and they fit beautifully and like you say it actually makes them stronger!
Great tip! Thanks for sharing!
What do you do with the new plants in the winter to protect against frost and snow?
I leave mine out as roses go dormant in winter and our winters aren’t that hard but if you have a particularly hard winter i would definitely protect.
@@JillBretherton Thanks very much. Am determined to give this a try.
If you buy wicker type containers first paint with exterior wood glue mixed with water. Repeat every year.
Thanks i am going to start campanula and sweet William this year
They are definitely worth it.
Helpful as always! Sorry i was stalking your playlist as you are a minefield of information! I might have missed it but do you have a biannual sowing video? Of what you would recommend to start sowing now and in the next few months? Many thanks!
Thank you for watching my videos. i am so glad they are helping. I just did one about 2 or 3 videos back (I can’t add links in comments you tube thinks it’s spam) but it’s basically about what to sow now for flowers this year. it’s called “sow these now June / July. They’re not all biennials but they all need at least one summer to grow before flowering the following summer, ie next summer.
I'd like to know if all your roses grow in full sun or are there any in part shade?
Yes. They are nearly all in semi shade. They grow well despite what people say.
@JillBretherton thank you. I was offered a Rise Up Ringo at half price yesterday (or any rose bush that was left) and I'm running out of room. I've positioned it where I think it might be happy and will see what it does there. I have gone from being afraid of roses to 19 plants in 2 years. Ludicrous really, considering the size of the garden 😏😁 I'm headed out to deadhead since it's cooler weather today.
Thank you. I bought 6 david austin roses 4 years ago, and only one is doing well. Can I move them ? as I think they don't get enough sun...they are leggy with very little leaf or flowers.
@@Debbieanne51 some David Austin roses are bred for part shade. i have one that thrives in quite dense shade and isn’t even leggy. Some do get leggy in shade though. So it would be prudent to check the variety. With my rose hedge it ranges from quite deep shade to part shade to little shade so I just planted roses in order of tolerance. Since putting up my pergola (increasing the shade) they have grown leggy but as I sell cut flowers I have found this quite useful. The point is roses can do well in part shade.
What a great idea, Jill. It looks perfect as a house plant and as you say, these are incredibly expensive to buy. Look forward to hearing how these get on. Happy gardening 🌷🦋🌷.
Yes i will update. I have just checked this morning (we’re having a pretty hot spell) and it’s still fine standing proud.
Thank you for a very helpful tips.
Fabulous video as always! Can the water method be used with clematis do you know? I tried with a loose soil mix and they still all died 😢 many thanks!
I haven't tried clematis in water but I have tried all sorts of plants that have worked so I don't see why it wouldn't. It's got to be worth a try. I have succeeded with many plants using water. I'd list them but it really is too many.
Use egg trays
I will be trying this for sure ! Would it be the same method for rambling roses and climbing roses please ? Thanks for a great video, new subscriber 😊
Great. Thanks for subscribing and yes do it the same way. I have done both a rambler and a climber this way and they worked fine.
That’s great I will definitely try this , thank you !
Nice video 🌹👍 I've put some cuttings ✂️🥀 in water 1 week ago and I'm really curious to see if they're going to root. I've once successfully propagated some roses with banana 🍌 peels covered around the stem.
I find water pretty reliable TBH. I can put it by the kitchen sink and I have to pass it to get to the kettle for my morning coffee which means I am much more likely to take better care of it which I think is why it's so easy. I love propagating plants in water.
@@JillBrethertondo you have to change the water though and how long would it take for it to root? Thank you
@@lynguyen6019 I do change the water which is why I like them on my north facinfg kitchen windowsill. The worst thing about cuttings is forgetting them. I think that is why the water method works so well for me because every time I make a coffee or wash up or prepare a meal, they are just there. It's pretty hard to forget to take care of them then. I think this is a really important factor when propagating plants because they just will not survive if you forget them and they dry out.
@@JillBretherton how often do you change the water? Is it ok to live it outside? I don’t have North window so it will be too sunny for them to stay inside
@@lynguyen6019 For sure they can live out side. (If you have a hard winter bring them in then they will be dormant so you can put them anywhere as long as there is some light and I just change the water as and when I think of it which is pretty regular but not obsessive. Maybe once or twice a week.
Hi, if you grew that rose cutting (in the last part of this video) last year, did you bring it indoors or keep it outside? I'm in zone 6b Ontario Canada and it snows here in winter. Thanks, Karina Dsouza
I didn’t no but we are not as cold as you in winter and our frosts don’t tend to last long. Usually just a few days if that. Roses are pretty hardy but I’m not sure a baby would survive a prolonged hard frost so i would keep it somewhere more protected if I were you. They do go dormant in winter so you wont need to fuss it but I probably would err on the side of caution with a baby.
I manage that a cutting was growing nicely and then the winter was too cold for it. I should have taken it in.
@@gardentours Oh that's interesting. I left mine out but it was potted up and well rooted by then. I did advise to take it in over winter as a precaution so good to know. Thanks.
Perfect timing! Ty.
Get to it! Get those roses growing!
I cut 5 early in the week before the heat dome struck and will cut more in the morning to try in water. Fabulous! Btw, my sweet peas have survived the 40° heat and seem to be flourishing alongside the clematis and rose. Two ranunculus planted à la clematis, roots in shade and head in sun, are giving me flowers! My seeded annuals are thriving and I have a potful of V. bonariensis seedlings to put in ground, pots and share with friends. Thanks for your help and encouragement! Gardening is so much fun 😊🇨🇦
@@Lea-zf7lm wow you have lots going on and lots of success by the sounds of it. How joyful! Yes the roses in water is a great method. Works for me every time.
Beautiful Honeywort I’ll definitely keep looking for it. Did you plant it from seed? So many of my seedlings have been eaten I’m actually scared to plant my cosmos directly in the ground ( I’ve spent a fortune on repellents ( not killers, wool being my favourite so far but I need tones more 🙆♀. Great tip with the roses. Hope your daughters ok 💞
Yes I planted it from seed and the other good news is it has been largely left alone by slugs. It seems to be fairly bomb proof and the bees love it. So I would definitely give it a go. P. S my daughter is good. Just a bit shaken. Thanks for asking.
I was wondering about corrugated cardboard boxes as one season compostable containers! I have so many pine branches and sticks for trellising and stake supports! I'm doing it today or tommorrow
Great. Definitely use cardboard boxes. They are suprisingly sturdy. We have had a lot of rain this season and mine are still going strong
Please tell me what zone you're in and how low does it get during your winters. I live in North Carolina USA and it rains a lot in winter here We got down to 18 degrees last winter Could all the plants you talked about overwinter in those conditions. Just found you site. So informative
In the south east of england on average it gets down to -5c (23F) not for prolonged periods though. We don't really have zones in UK but I htink I am hovering between an 8 & 9 from what I gather.

Yes. I think you are a similar climate actually. Well we are temperate you are hotter and more humid I think. All the plants I mention are pretty hardy. so I think you'll be fine. I just double checked your zone and yes they should all be fine. I did just double check that these plants can survive your winter temps and I can happily confirm they can. They are really tough! Good luck!
“In the old days when you used to use sheets” Bed sheets are still a thing. Most ADULTS use them
Love this! Two Questions: 1) how do you lift out the plants to transplant them when not in small separate containers? Do you just lift the out gently? 2) What so you mean by "cut and come again"? You just leave them in the trays and cut what you need for salad and don't transplant? Thanks!
Depends on the plant. I did zinnias quite widely spaced apart and lifted them out separately. Things liks gypsophilia and some wildflowers I grew, I planted them out in chunks and for the salad I just left them in and am using them as a cut and come again crop which has been very productive.
My mom calls the sheet folding technique "hospital corners"...
That's it. That's the one.
I think you did a very clever job with your little greenhouse. You even made doors! Putting the plastic on sounds like a real pain, but good idea to buy the better plastic!
Putting the plastic on my own was the hardest. If you have help it is easier. I have to say a year on and many storms later it is still going strong. So I think adapting it has been worth the effort. I don't have any holes in the plastic either. it's pretty tough. Glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching
Love the information you gave. Thank you for staring.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent video, thank you ❤
You are welcome!
Beautiful, my favourites flowers 🌺 Can you tell me what those are next to the Swt peas at the end of the video, hanging heads purpley blue & green? Your garden is just amazing 💖
They are cerinthe, honeywort. They are amazing! They have been so tough and have thrived in my garden. They also make an excellent cut flower and self seed. If you go to my June garden tour video 6.27 minutes in I show you the cerinthe. I can't recommend it enough.
@@JillBretherton Thank you Jill appreciate your help again. I looked for it this morning at the flower market but no joy. xx
Thanks for saving the bird .
Our pleasure! Loved that bird. Still think of the little thing. Hope he/ she is ok.
Love seeing flowers and veg growing together. I lost a stunning clematis in full bloom to clematis wilt in a few days 😢. So much joy hearing you talk with passion of your happy place .❤
Did you lose it? I have had clematis not come up one year and then re appear in absolute glory the next year. Don't give up! I am so glad you are enjoying my videos. ☺️
I started my delphiniums March , will they flower next year ? ❤ I planted ranunculus a few weeks ago the corms and they are growing, I believed it would come up next year . I’m so new to this . Started last year with David Austin rose , then went to 50 seed packets, I now know why it’s called a nursery, I had to be so attentive. But wow worth it now . I had to create flower borders fast 💨.
The delphiniums should be fine. The ranunculus might be mis timed. What zone are you? Ranunculus hate hot weather. They like to flower in cooler weather. You might have missed the boat with them. They can over winter for early flowering but the prefer later cooler summer to start growing for flowering the following spring early summer. If I were you I would dig them up if they haven't started to grow yet. Let them dry out and start again later in the year. Depends on your zone when though.
Thanks. I've been using these as bottom trays for years. You certainly got me thinking now.....from Canada
What about Powdery Mildew Resistant Plants? Powdery Mildew is my worst enemy. Please do a video on disease resistant hardy plants
Good idea.
