4 stops on this small stream special! Shebs shows up for spots C and D. There a lot of beavage here along with a fair amount of mud too. Connecting with brookies and browns here. Some very decent sized browns in such small places. Happy fishing!!

Well, August starts out scalding hot! For Adam anyway. hahaha. Adam got his first ever tiger trout here and brought a heavy 16.5" brown to hand for best fish. Three strops with some action at each. Browns from 16.5" to dinkers and brookies from 12" to dinkers. The star was Adam's 1st tiger!! Happy fishing!!!

Well folks, July 2024 is in the books. It closes with a great outing here. My buddy Brad managed to meet up again for this early morning outing. With temperatures expecting to soar into the 90s, an AM start was a good move. Fish were hot throughout the morning with many hitting on the drop. The water was 61F degrees and the feedbag was on. 50 to hand here, with many catches missed with Brad off...

An awesome small stream outing here! If you think you have fished small streams. you will want to check this one out!! Gemmed up brookies and decent browns here near the end. Always amazed by the beauty of the North American brook trout, a fabulous animal!!! This was a slow wade, so there are a couple tips of the trip here and some casting tutorial as well. Happy fishing!!!!

My biddy Tim contacted me to go fishing last minute. We get out here for some walleye and other warm water species. Decent action with 3 nice walleye and sauger to hand. White bass, bluegill, perch, drum, northern, shad... Lots of different fish in this water body. Probably have another boat trip this weekend as well, but don't fret. streams are close by! I don't do a bunch of collaborations, but when an opportunity to check out fishing sunglasses came about I was glad. This is an unpaid, unbiased review. Polarized sunglasses are essential to trout fishing. An unboxing here and some river action with a nice sauger to hand! I do like these Marino Bonatti sunglasses. More to come with actual use on streams!!

A nice outing here. Browns at 17.25 and 16.75. Several 13 as well as a zillion dinks. Really happy to see this stream improve this year. It's been three years since a major fish kill. Obviously, these larger fish made it thru the kill event. Larger browns in the 17" range are likely 4-5 years old. Happy fishing!

An early morning started was hampered by dirty water in the western driftless. There are some clear signs of recent flash flood that ravaged the area last week. 3 stops here. Shebs and I get out here for evening fish. We tried a brookie spot looking for some nice action. Started super slow. Water here was almost 65F at 5pm. the mosquitoes were pretty bad. I managed a tanker 15.5" and Shebs picked up several 12" fish on the back half. Lotsa nice water and scenery here. Made is out as sunset hit, which meant not many fish to hand - 10 to 20. My opinion on why there are not any 5-pound brook trout in Wisconsin streams. Number 1, no non-native trout or salmon in the stream. Number 2, the hatchery brook trout released all have gill lice and will overexert during spawning and will die. Solution, as soon as the brook trout hatch (less than a day old and from a spring house not near any hatchery) stock the brook trout fry in the headwaters of springs with plenty of watercress and scuds. Number 3, the food chain for brook trout exceeding 12 inches has to be restored to the cold-water section of a stream. Solution: Native riparian zone trees and vegetation on the streambank of the stream. Native minnows, crayfish, frogs, water shrew, salamanders, etc. in a stream with beaver dams. The DNR loves regulations so for regulation all brook trout with gill lice have to be harvested and removed from the stream. All healthy brook trout have to be returned to the stream. But I'm realistic and the DNR fish biologists will never get "healthy, wild" 5-pound brook trout inhabiting our cold Wisconsin trout streams. Your opinion?

    • @WisconsinTroutFishing
      @WisconsinTroutFishing Pƙed 58 minutami

      @@davidstakston1950 I agree those measures would help. But I am not convinced the DNR cares much about trophy brook trout. The HI projects I see are basically flood control structures that have supplemental positive effects on potentially lowering stream temps, limiting siltation that blocks natural reproduction and accessibility for all anglers. We have awesome access laws in WI, but some places are trampled. I think adopting MN rules of one over 16 and five total makes better sense. I think they could stop stocking most brown trout and isolate coldest streams for brookie only development. Brookies would thrive and brown fisheries would have fewer fish, but better size distribution. Happy fishing!

    What turned on the feeding binge of the bigger brown trout in this stream? My seven choices: 1) the baby leeches are coming out of their cocoon with the warmer water, 2) the big mayflies are hatching, 3) the grasshoppers are blown into the stream. 4) the tadpoles from the backwater have become small frogs and are jumping into the stream, 5) the rough fish and native crayfish removed by the DNR shocking crew are migrating back upstream from the main river, 6) the field mice are swimming across the stream to reproduce with next new moon August 4, 2024, 7) the hatchery truck just dropped some hungry brood brown trout. DID YOU CHECK THE GUT OF THE BIG BROWN TROUT you harvested to see what the big brown trout were feeding upon? Being the brown trout and brook trout had no blue heron marks you'll probably find hatchery pellets in the gut of the harvested brown trout.

    Do you see many muskrats? I noticed a few black willow trees on the shoreline and extending over this stream. My home stream always had muskrat burrows or homes into the root system of the black willow tree. The big brown trout lived in the muskrat's underwater burrow under black willow trees and probably snacked on baby muskrats and earthworms. The muskrats don't store food for the winter so the muskrats could have eaten the black willow tree roots in the winter months. The muskrats are disappearing at an alarming rate so the DNR reed canary grass streambanks are probably the cause of the muskrat demise also. P.S. The fish biologists were never offered a course in coevolution in the stream environment.

    I've been trying to fish the wisconsin Creeks for trout and haven't had much luck. How long is your rod? and how do you manage your spinner through the current? I feel like my spinner is never in the water for more than 5 seconds. Perhaps the creeks I'm fishing are too running too fast

    • @WisconsinTroutFishing
      @WisconsinTroutFishing Pƙed 9 dny

      I use a 5'6" length rod. I like rods that are medium power and fast action. Something like an Ugly Stick or Shimano FX are great rods for stream fishing. A couple of tips. 1. Always fish upstream. 2. If you are using a tiny ultralight reel, don't. Small reels do not have the gear ratio or line retrieve capacity to fish trout streams (unless you have a bionic wrist and hand). 3 Use larger, heavier spinners. If you are using tiny sizes 0-4 (1/32 and 1/16 oz) don't. You can easily pitch 1/4 - 1/2oz spinners. They are easier to cast and the fish will smash them. There are a lot of videos here, so you have many examples of casting and how to fish WI trout streams. Happy fishing!

    Another great video buddy. We got 2 1/2 rain the other day, and just before the rain i hit the stream, and caught 52 brookie, biggest 16. The browns you caught on here were pretty colors. Bright golds, spots, and background colors. Great outing for you, and us to watch. Thank you

    Yes, I hope that the biodiversity comes back to this stream so there will be a food chain for a few brown trout over 20 inches. Great fishing in your local stream.

      @@davidstakston1950 Me too. That stream always seemed top out at 19s, but I am hopeful. There is plenty of food and the water stays cold. The weeds and rocks lower angling pressure considerably. Time will tell. Happy fishing!

    • @WisconsinTroutFishing
      @WisconsinTroutFishing Pƙed 12 dny

      I have never caught one there. Probably low from the big muddy, there could be a few. It's way too cold, pike would not come in there before they spawn in 55F water elsewhere. Happy fishing!

    Yep, getting old sucks. LOL. Finally got out this past weekend. My plan B was a mess. it was a long walk to get to, then there were branches down everywhere. I was hoping it was going to clear up but after a few falls and swear words I marked it as unfishable. Did catch a few at plan A and C but not as many as I was hoping. They were hitting but just not taking it which seems to be my overall fishing this year - I was using the new reel ;-) Loved it!

    You may consider getting a net or reaching down to lift the fish instead of hoisting them all up by their mouths or flipping them into the rocks.
