Welcome to Four Shields Tavern in Dragon Bridge, just south of Solitude in Haafingar Hold! The most imperial hold in all of Skyrim, Varnius Junius returns to this tavern after petitioning Jarl Elisif and Falk Firebeard about the strange occurances at Wolfskull Cave (spoiler alert: Potema the Wolf Queen and former-almost-Empress is trying to return from the dead). The town lumberjack Horgeir, is apparently also the town drunk due to his contentious relationship with his wife Olda (who isn't exactly amicable and apparently is having an affair that everyone except her husband knows about, according to the innkeeper Faida).
Horgeir has a secret stash of ale, wine and mead just outside of town, with a one-of-a-kind bottle called Dragon's Breath Mead that he is particularly fond of and his wife is very interested in obtaining. Why she wants to keep this particular bottle is unclear, but the name is cool enough that I was inspired to take my own pass at brewing it myself. Like many of the meads in Skyrim, there are no in-game recipes for it or even flavor descriptors beyond the name, and it didn't make the cut for the Elder Scrolls Cookbook so I've set out to develop a recipe for it that I think gives Vilod's Mead with Juniper Berries a run for its money.
I was inspired by @MethodtotheMeadness's Dragon's Breath Mead recipe that incorporates a blend of orange blossom and purple star thistle honeys and @TastingHistory's recent videos on "long pepper," a staple of medieval cuisine, but also incorporated my own twist with smoked Huajillo honey (not to be confused with Guajillo - they're different plants!). I also wanted a bit of florality for flavor and color (inspired by the nearby Red Mountain Flowers that look more orange imo), so I incorporated rubbed elderflowers for flavor and orange calendula for color and a mild chamomile-esque influence. Lastly, I chose a more appropriate yeast this time around called Kveik (which is also just the Norwegian word for yeast) - it was relatively recently rediscovered in ancient Nordic farmhouses and is all around a better choice for both lore accuracy and flavor to my palate.
The question of "which" dragon's breath it smells like came up as I was brewing - we had one mild scare in the primary fermentation where it almost became Durnehviir's rotten undead dragon breath in the Soul Cairn, but by the end I think everyone would agree that it tastes more akin to Paarthurnax's breath after he just finished meditating on the Word of Power "Yol".

The juniper berries are for the Ashfire mead from Thirsk I think :o
Very interesting, im definitely going to look into elder flowers for a mead
I feel like nuka cola quartz is a cream soda
I think that's a safe bet!
As soon as you said "yeasty friends crave" I thought of Brawndo Mead. Horrifying.
Dude this is such a cool video, on the tea thing I'd recommend using Russian Caravan, it's a smoky tea that might add a bit more of the smokiness you're looking for
Can you substitute an alternative sugar? Like stevia?
I’ll do some research and let you know - I think you’d need to add some kind of thickening agent and/or stabilizer, but otherwise I think so!
I infused calendula in olive oil for a salve I make; it always smells like bread when heated up.
I see you putting those Avatar Flameo edits in 🔥I'll take 10 barrels of your finest Dragon's Breath, sir!
Love this! I also love long pepper. I recently got some to add to a no-water cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant mead. The fruitiness of the peppwr is so great!
King Cobra JFS’s meads are better
Aw man, I knew I shoulda put Skittles in this one...
@@quenchquestdrinks skittles mead looking nice toobz
I thought this might be based on the dragon's breath mead recipe by City Steading Brews which is built around berries and jalepeño's, though I don't think their's is inspired by Skyrim, but this is very interesting too. They have a lot of very good videos about brewing mead and other things. I wonder if you could improve your recipe further with their insights. Technique-wise they tend to go with making brews go dry then later backsweetening as opposed to aiming for some residual sweetness. I could see that working out well with a recipe like this too.
I agree on the backsweetening - I just stuck to the residuals on this one so it still follows the Elder Scrolls Cookbook’s general brewing style! I do have a couple upcoming ones that absolutely required backsweetening though…
Best video ever 10/10 amazing couldn’t have watched a better video ever
It's too bad i couldn't finish the quest because the bottles would disappear into the ground before I could get them making the quest unbeatable due to a bug
Classic 😂 that’s why I like Bethesda games on PC - I can just fix it with code in the console commands myself…
seeing this at 2:30AM with a resetted brain no thoughts and hungry just hits different
Especially with that fever dream of an intro song… 😂
Were can I get hop tea in the UK please
At first I read the thumbnail as “Tasting Nuka-cola Every Quantum in Fallout!”
The thumbnail structure struggle is real... 😂 reminds me of the "DON'T DEAD OPEN INSIDE" writing in the first episode of The Walking Dead 🧟
Are you adding the straw sucking sound? If not you need straws that actually work and don't seem to have holes in them. If you are adding that sound stop, what made you think that is the sound of sucking on a straw with a full glass?
They're just glass straws - I did add the effect in post to cue that I was taking another sip in the event that someone was just listening rather than watching (otherwise it's just sort of an awkward silence). It's meant to be kind of "tongue-in-cheek" with a rather cartoon-y soda straw sound effect, but if it's egregious I'll dial it back on future iterations!
Very entertaining and well edited video I just bought the g fuel flavor but I never thought to carbonate it. I still have my jones quantum flavor I got from my old birthday party I didn’t think it was great but good to know it wasn’t just me
Appreciate it! If you don't have something to carbonate it with, just try mixing it with club soda - good stuff!
just described this channel and I’m blown away by the creativity and effort behind your videos. so cool
Appreciate it! A lot more in the works!
Alternate history and post-apocalypse are both fantasies lmao
Yeah I mostly meant that as it's a fantasy setting with the other two descriptors as subcategories...
I love you for saying everything you need before starting lol

Balloon shop mentioned, I see you
Respect🎈what I wouldn't give to see them continue that channel... their individual efforts are great, but together they just hit different.
I like the video, it was well made and entertaining but I'm sorry, I just *have* to bully you for being such a baby about things being too sweet and small amounts of caffeine being able to "amp you up"
I'll take the criticism 😂
Honestly I expected more sugar in Nuka Cola quartz. It's entire thing was that there were sugar crystals in the drink to create a feeling of quartz crystals when drinking. So it's essentially an oversaturated sugar solution.
Kind of want to make a more lore-accurate version of this one now... can you point me to the source(s) that talk about this? The closest I'm getting on the wiki is that in New Vegas, the consumption sound effect was crunching rather than drinking but I suspect there are more direct statements about the quartz-crystal drinking effect. While I don't want to just make a crunchy carbonated syrup, I think a drink with large sugar crystals or something added as a garnish could get us closer to the idea!
For when you try Vim, it may be a good idea to buy yourself some Moxie to compare flavours, as that is the soda that Vim is based on.
Might have something on the way already… 👀
Considering the ash yams being a Dunmeri staple crop as well, would they not be considered one of the ingredients? Ash yam is _the_ primary crop of the Ascadian Isles. Maybe your primary alcohols can be sweet potato vodka paired with the Japanese barley wine? And the cranberry and goji berrie combo with some lemon sounds lovely.
I want to give this a shot! I do have one video on a separate drink in the works that incorporates a riff on Ash Yams (the Elder Scrolls Cookbook has a baked ash yam recipe) - let’s just say I went a bit nuts with it though…
@@quenchquestdrinks Wonderful! Looking forward to it! And I was genuinely surprised, after I had my idea, to find out that there eas such a thing as sweet potato vodka. Not that the source of the vodka matters for the end product, really, but it was a cool discovery nonetheless.
The idea of drinking 200 year old irradiated milk soda is disturbing to say the least…. Also where did you get those bottles you used for the syrup? They seem to be the right size and I want to be careful before trying this myself
Lol, Milk Soda. Ewwwww
Truly, I don't know how it isn't cheese-soda at this point... 🤢 They're actually just old whiskey and wine bottles I washed + sanitized! They're all 750ml, the only recipe that should have used a larger bottle is the classic Nuka-Cola syrup (it needs something more like 1 liter).
@@quenchquestdrinks Thanks for the heads up
Great video, but... I swear, I'm going to make my own Nuka Cola Quantum video... Because everyone who's done it this far, has done something objectively wrong, and it irritates me on a molecular level... Also, fun facts... Nuka Dark is just regular Nuka Cola with alcohol already in it... Either Rum or Whiskey (rum is the safe bet, because they literally released a Nuka Dark Rum, which had its own story worthy of a video) Nuka Wild is Nuka Cola Co. answer to Sunset Sarsaparilla. So root beer? Grape and Orange are self explanatory, in a similar vein as Cherry... But Victory is a true wild card, especially since Jones Soda just released that "Peach Mango" flavor... The only description of the flavor in-game was, "summertime in a bottle".
Thanks! I want to make actually caffeinated versions of the ones that would have it, and I'm sure there's a way to potentially mess with a (potentially more stable) strontium isotope... probably still wouldn't drink that one though 💀 Working on all the ones you listed too so I can finally make the variants that are just blends of existing ones! Beyond the disaster that was the Nuka Dark Rum release, Nuka-Cola Dark was also confirmed by Fallout 76 to be a rum (or at least contain it and Nuka-Cola in some capacity) so I'm leaning that way (probably a dark rum, hence the name). The only addendum on Grape and Orange vs. Cherry is that Cherry contains some Cola, while Grape and Orange don't say they did (although orange did start as a pear-brandy flavor and apparently contains trace arsenic?). Gonna do Sunset and Wild together, and peach-mango sounds like it could be "summertime in a bottle" to me (at least Jones didn't just repackage an existing flavor like they did with their rendition of Quantum)! Appreciate the enthusiasm and would love to see some alternate takes on them! The recipes I've done so far are technically Vault-Tec's reverse-engineered + safer recipes, after all...
amazing video, i own the cookbook aswell, defo gonna make this now.
Thank you - excellent choice!
Fantastic video! I’m so glad you recreated some of the other Nuka cola flavors, and I can’t wait to see you recreate the rest of them in the future! Your acting and editing skills made this video 100/10! 😁👍🏻
Thank you! I like making videos I'd want to watch about the things I'm interested in and I'm glad other people seem like them too. Lots more to come!
Hmm, Rosenthal. That's one of (((those))) names.
in the pre-eso days, a friend of mine made a lovely attempt at sujamma, basing it on sake, as [salt]rice seems to be the primary grain on vvardenfell. there was some berry element - she agreed with you that comberries could be most closely represented by cranberries.- but i forget how she added it.
Love this! I also wanted to keep it distinct from Mazte, which is described in several places as a fermented saltrice beverage (working on a comprehensive guide to Elder Scrolls alcohols adapted for the real world) and Shein/Greif (comberry wine/brandy, respectively).
I personally like to replace the star anise with nutmeg. Otherwise it tastes like black licorice and thats disgusting.
Yeah that was the primary tasting note my wife got, she was not a fan 💀 I think because I made it and was looking for all the other flavors I knew were in there, it wasn't as overwhelming to my palate.
it would probably taste bad but tonic water would cause quantum to glow blue under a uv light
I bet we could make a cocktail or mocktail-version with slightly less syrup to try this out...
There's a pretty good chance when they said "browning sauce", they meant caramel browning sauce / liquid, just brown sugar and water.
Yeah I heard that after the fact 😂 we'll see if the author can potentially provide any clarification if she responds!
Frankly, the separating and whipping stages I feel are a bit pointless, especially when you are going to let it sit for a long period of time aging. My procedure : 1. Put the eggs (whites and yolks) into a blender, add much of the alcohol, and all the sugar, and blend until homogeneous. 2. Add _that_ to a container (a gallon milk jug), add the cream/milk, nutmeg, and the rest of the alcohol, then shake until well mixed. 3. Let age. A lot less mess; a lot less effort; you get pretty much the same result after aging.
Efficient! May or may not incorporate something akin to this for this year's attempt...
For the Browning Sauce in the Nuka-Cola Classic recipe, there's some debate in the Fallout fandom that it's a typo, and the author actually meant to put Browning _Liquid_ instead. Browning Liquid is basically just caramelized brown sugar and water, mixed into a thin syrup, and is used primarily to add coloring to baked goods. It's a staple of Carribean baking and cuisine, but can pretty readily be bought in supermarkets. And it makes a helluva lot more sense to use in a soda recipe than a gravy additive.
That would make a lot of sense - I found it strange that the recipe called for it, but given the amount of sugar, spices and fruit present the vegetal aspects are fairly buried and generally just lend a hint of umami to the total flavor profile, I can ultimately forgive it. Might just follow up with the author and see if we can't get a straight answer!
yeah imma need like 100 more of these videos please
I got you, lots more to come! (in between all the other Elder Scrolls drinks and beyond, of course...)
I wanna try the Nuka Quartz.. I love a creamy soda
It's really good! Might be a top contender for the Nuka-Cola Float...
I like to think, in the Fallout timeline, John Pemberton and Caleb Bradham were a gay couple whose child founded Nuka-Cola.
Amazing, fantastic headcanon 😂 although they might need to have been born a bit later in the timeline themselves... or perhaps he's a descendant of both of them somehow 🤷♂ Also - I dig the username!
Nika quantum has to taste like blue raspberry and you cannot convince me of the contrary
No reason it couldn't be in the secret formula somewhere!
