Furry Literature: The History of Anthropomorphic Animal Xenofiction
Anthropomoprhism, or the process of giving human traits to other creatures, objects, natural forces, or even concepts, is one of the oldest elements of our species’ collective cultural heritage, and while stories featuring anthropomorphic animals can be found as far back as the classical era, within the last century and a half, tales utilizing this approach have achieved unprecedented popularity across the globe. Here, we’ll be diving into the history of anthropomorphic animal fiction, taking a specific focus on those stories told from the perspective of their nonhuman characters.

American State Flag Redesigns are BORING (But We Can Do Better)

Roman Mars’ 2015 TED Talk on flag design ignited a wave of interest in improving the flags of American cities and states… but nearly a decade later, the results are a bit of a mixed bag. There’s two ways you’d want your audience to react to a plot twist of any kind: Having them not expect it at all and being surprised when it happens at all, And the harder one, have it be that they *know* the twist is coming at some point, but for it to be such a good moment that it makes one jump up and yell, “I called it!” In excitement. Deaths reveal is pointedly part of the latter for a lot of people.

I agree with your title-- recent attempts to redesign state flag have yielded boring results. To be frank though, I'm a little confused how your designs are any different. They've got the same over-reliance on obvious symbolism ("a horse for Kentucky!", "put the state bird/flower/tree on there!"), random color selections ("Kentucky should be green... not bluegrass green, just a random green!," "New Hampshire should be purple!"), oversimplified geometry ("let's turn the coolest thing in Oklahoma's flag into basic shapes!", "everyone gets a center circle... but not the seal they used to have!"). I'm starting to think NAVA's "Good Flag" principles are actually bad advice (certainly when taken as gospel).

How the Lion, King of all the Beasts, sent out his commandments that all Beasts should come to his feast and court. In the time when the forests are lusty with leaves and flourishing trees, and the ground smells sweet with herbs, and is colourfully flowery, and all fowls and birds sound melodious in their harmony, the crowned King of all the Beasts, the noble lion, would hold an open court at state, and send a commandment that all Beasts should attend, so that he might come to know the news of the land. So, then, all Beasts great and small came to court, except Reynard the Fox. Because he knew himself guilty of many a fault and disport against too many Beasts, he dared not show himself. When the Lion, amid the strew of leaves, had gathered the peers of the realm, there were none of them all in the shadow of the wood but deplored all the mayhem perpetrated by Reynard the Fox-indeed, him.

I’ve been writing a xenofiction story about my own original species, called cerriens, which are basically just demonic-looking cat-like creatures. They live on their own continent called Fintaria where there are four subspecies each adapted to living in certain habitats: The Mountain Kingdom, Desert Kingdom, the Fintarian Tribe (the first civilization to exist that live in forest/moorland habitats), and the Treetop Tribe (which live mostly in trees). When a cerrien dies they go to the Spirit World as a ghost that can visit the Living World occasionally through a portal. No mortals can see the ghosts except for one special cerrien born every century called the Spirit-Watcher. For the actual plot of the story, the Spirit World has been corrupted and is in the process of being destroyed forever by a mysterious evil ghost, and the Spirit-Watcher at the time (named Echo) and some other cerriens have to journey across Fintarian to find a portal to make it to the Spirit World and stop its corruption. (This is way too long lol)

A correction: Coffeeshop Fox stories are actually used quite often in children's literature, particularly those aimed at younger readers, i.e., Marc Brown, Rosemary Wells, and Kevin Henkes, among others. Also, you forgot to mention that sometimes the characters in those types of stories don't even acknowledge that the characters are animals.

Shrek, when it was new, was a smart deconstruction of the fairytale Disney had spent decades profiting off of. It was raunchy and rude, abandoning the musical format expected of the genre in favor of a cynical drama that culminated in a poignant lesson for audiences of all ages. And in doing so, Shrek created a new fairytale for the modern era. Flash forward to today. What Shrek did is now the norm, and everything has been deconstructed to the point of destruction and ruin for countless franchises. In the pit of irony and cynicism Shrek helped usher in, the series would again go against the grain, and remind us why the fairytales and heroes of yore were so brilliant all along. And so once again, with Puss In Boots at the helm, the Shrek series would make an old genre new again, ushering in a fairytale for the modern era. I find that incredibly poetic in its way, and I can't imagine anyone but Shrek and Dreamworks pulling off two counter-cultural phenomenons with the same series. We have yet to see what legacy The Last Wish will have, but I genuinely hope it serves as the light to bring us back into a brighter age of media.

I'm not a furry (liking the Man-Kzin wars doesn't make me one) (also, I must admit that the Chanur books are quite enjoyable -- good to see that someone else has at least heard of them) (furthermore, The Book of the New Sun had some concepts that I thought were quite interesting, such as humanized animals being used as a caste of Janissary-like servant-soldiers by the Autarch of Urth (may rays of dawning light shine from his very footprints), unfortunately we don't see them much), but I found this video very insightful. Honestly, I really appreciate your efforts; I always leave your videos feeling smarter than when I went in. Thank you.

Also, I'd recommend the Freelance Familiars series by Daniel Potter. It's about a mild-mannered librarian in an urban fantasy setting who is permanently transformed into a cougar and has to navigate the violent intrigues of wizards, witches and a mafia-like Talking Animal Union. The books suffer from overly frenetic pacing- the plot of the 6-book series could probably have been stretched into 15-20 novels and felt more naturally paced. But despite that flaw, I still found them all extremely enjoyable to read. The author is also very much a furry, and includes lot of stuff from the subculture. Vaguely similar is the The Price of Thorns by Tim Susman, which is about a trans-man thief who is changed permanently into a weasel in a fantasy setting that reads like a clever blend of the Brothers Grimm and 1001 Nights. The author Phil Geusz has also written a variety of novels about people transformed into anthros and animals. This "former human" subgenre of furry fiction is smaller than the ones you've described in the video, but also very much a thing.
