Naomi Wolf, the American feminist and author of The Beauty Myth, was interviewed in front of the cameras by Ali G, British humorist and author of Da Joy of Bonin, a spoof lover’s guide, writes Maurice Chittenden. But what happened has left blood on the cutting-room floor and a row about the ruse used to get her to take part. Wolf branded Ali G’s alter ego - Sacha Baron Cohen, the Cambridge-educated son of a London menswear shop owner - a “racist” for impersonating a black interviewer. She also threatened legal action which, she says, led the producers to drop her appearance from Ali G’s new American series. He responded by claiming she was acting flirtatiously as he ground his hips towards her mid-interview. Baron Cohen has refused to let Wolf blow da house down. His American series has been successful enough to secure a prime-time rerun in the US and he plans to use the Wolf footage when a British version of the show is screened on Channel 4 next month. The meeting of Ali G and “the world’s most famous lesbian”, as he called her in a magazine interview, took place in a Manhattan hotel.
