Well, the Sony may be the supposed “King of the hill”, but I much preferred the AcePro’s footage over the Sony’s. Great real world review man!
A7siii is still king of the hill. Acepro is debatably the king of the hill for action cameras. Definitely in low light it is. Thanks! 🙏🏼
Does lark m1 with ace non pro work together what do you think...
Great video, man!!! Does the Lark M2 also work with the GoPro12?
You’ll need to purchase the GoPros media mod. It’s kind of a big bulky set up.
Would it work on Insta360 X4? I would like to see a review and setup of the two in action. Great video!
You could get it to work with the x4. I’m not sure if it’s one of the mics they have listed that will be out of the stitch line. So you won’t see it. I know the rode mics were on that list. I think there is a compatible list on their site.
Clean your lenses when filming 😉
They were clean. iPhone wide lens just has poor performance.
I will use it on the phone. Is there a mute button on the microphone or the phone receiver? What should I do if I want to prevent the sound from being cut off momentarily?
I don’t remember there being a mute button. If you want constant connection then you should consider a mic with internal recording. Like the lark max, DJI mic 1 or 2.
@@codylander Do you know if it supports super fast charging via Type C port?
@@mylifeisbroken34 I know it charges via USB-C. I don’t remember if it’s fast charging. I can’t imagine that it’s slow.
What audio setup u hv. It’s damn good
In the vlog I’m just using acepro microphone. It was a very calm day. No wind. In the studio I’m using a Deity VO-7U recorded on my MacBook Air into garage band via usb-c.

Happy to help! That little hold display button while turning it on had me hooked up for a min 😝 Figured others might be having the same issue. 👍🏼👍🏼
If used as ASMR, what mode of use should this microphone be set to?
Asmr effect happens when you record in a quiet room with the microphone very close to the subject you are recording. If for example you are talking and want it to have the Amsr effect you should set the gain of the microphone so you can pick up the small noises/whispers. To do this you’ll want to adjust the gain into the negative range. Try starting at -3 and see if that is giving you the correct amount. If it’s not enough keep going to -6 or -12. As for which mode to use you could use any of them. If I was asked to make an asmr style recording with one person as the talent I would use one mic on the safety track feature. If I needed to record two people or two subjects I would record in stereo and make sure that I set the microphone levels properly. Hope this makes sense. Let me know if this helps. 👍🏼
Good review/tests, I received mine this morning but haven't managed to test it properly. What are your thoughts on the Internal recording quality?
I love being able to use internal recording. As you can see from the test in this video it totally saves the audio files that had major drop outs from the transmitted connection. I think any serious project should also be internally recorded. 👍🏼👍🏼
@@codylander Yes, that's why I chose the Lark Max over the Lark M2. But how good is the internal recording audio quality?
The internal recording is a 24bit audio file. Very good. 👍🏼
What do you think about NEEWER 35.4"/90cm Parabolic Softbox compared to LightDome SE. I am stuck with my choice.
I haven’t ever used Neewer products. I just took a look at it on B&H. For the price it seems like a good deal. The LD SE takes a bit more to set up but that means you can pack it flat. I use the SE when we travel because it can fit in my luggage. The Neewer seems the have the same of similar design to the Nanlite softbox I’m using in this video. The metal quick snaps are great for a quick set up and break down. But you’ll have to be careful if you’re traveling with it because it’s easy to stack something on top of the softbox while it’s packed up potentially bending the rods.. Also the metal design will add more weight to your light. So if you’re using a smaller light with a plastic build it could potentially become a problem depending on how you’re setting it up. Honestly both of them look great. If you need to save some $$$ and you’d like to be able to travel with it I’d go for the SE. If you need to be able to set up and break down quickly I’d go for the Neewer.
Hi Cody! Is the internal recording only mono? Is it possible to set the capturing mode to safety track, trough the menu on the receiver, and expect each transmitter to record internally both normal and safety track?
Good question! I’ll confirm this for you first by asking the HollyLand Rep I am in contact with and when I get my hands on the Lark Max again. I’ll be getting the mic again to put it up against the DJI mic 2 and the Rode wireless pro. So keep an eye out for that video in the coming weeks. When I imported my internal recordings they were recorded Mono and I had to change the audio track in DaVinci resolve to stereo so I could add the track to the other side. You can see me do that in the tutorial section of this video. I’m not sure if we are able to adjust how the internal recording is recorded besides the gain.
@@codylander Good. I've been wanting to buy a set of wireless mics and it'll be one more opinion about all of them. If I may, try to show them in the most real life like scenarios for solo videomakers. I don't mean influencers, I mean one man band gigs for professional work. No one is doing that and I can't decide if I listen to those who tell me to get 1000€ equipment because quality and longevity and professionalism or if one of those 3 alternatives will be enough for small scale professional work and for some time. I'll be waiting for that comparison video. When you can, check that out about the internal recording just to be sure but I'm afraid it's not possible reading what you said, you indeed changed it to stereo.. I think that's all we get, one track.
I think a solid wireless mic is the best bang for buck upgrade we can purchase as content creators, one man band, or even higher level production. I have tried multiple times to record videos while we are shooting our commercial work but I always end up getting pulled away with the actual job so the reviews end up missing key parts. This is why you see me doing these out and about solo videos I’m currently making. Maybe you’d like to see an overview of our “day of” process and techniques? I think I could make a video like that at our studio showing you our process without an actual client there with us. I think all three of these options(Hollyland, DJI, rode) can be used “professionally” meaning you could find jobs that will pay you for the quality work if you have a solid understanding of how to use the mics. We have used the DJI mic 1 on some jobs that definitely needed UHF. Luckily the internal recording saved our butts! That’s when we invested into UHF. I don’t think you need to go out and spend $1,000+ on a mic system. But the investment in the long run does make sense. Right now the HollyLand Lark max is the most reliable and affordable system coming in at $125US per channel. As I mentioned in this video it isn’t perfect. But you can definitely get good quality at a very affordable price. As for UHF the most reliable and affordable option seems to be the Deity Theos. Which I’ll be reviewing soon compared to the Sony UHF. Deity comes in at $545US per channel. Replaceable battery’s, 32bit internal, global band, timecode, and the list continues. Long story short. If you’re just doing smaller jobs any of these options are great. If you’re stepping up to higher level productions in the near future UHF is a smart investment. Sorry for the long response!
@@codylander Nothing to be sorry for, I'm thankful for your time and knowledge! I'd like to see a video like that, please do it if you get the chance. Regarding the wireless mics, I understand the logic of "not spending the same money twice" but I think it makes sense to start with a consumer level system, on a consumer level budget, and eventually buy UHF later. I just started. I bought a 3.5mm shotgun and will eventually get the Lark Max, I guess that will be enough for most of what's coming. The only thing I'm reluctant about the Lark Max is knowing that both Dji Mic 2 and RODE Pro record internally 32 bits. Even though they're more expensive. Will have to make up my mind on that.
You seem to have the correct thinking with all of this. I haven’t tested the HollyLand Lav mics. But I’m sure there is a decent lav that works with the HollyLand system. I know the DJI systems are less than optimal for working with 3rd party lav mics. I’ve found that the Shure MVL works great with the DJI mic 1. I’ve also seen multiple reviews from trusted sources that have had major issues with connecting quality lavs to both systems. I do think 32bit float is worth it. Also the DJI mic two has some Bluetooth connectivity that is very useful with their action cameras. However just keep in mind that if you set your levels correctly and use a safety track you should be in the clear. I’ve never used 32bit float until just last night with my first test of the DJI mic 2. If you need to save money go with the HollyLand. If you want to future proof your set up I’d consider the DJI mic 2.
Hey Cody, thank you so much for the video, you've gained a sub! It really helps me with my decision on audio setup for the ace pro. One question I had was basically the process when before and after recording. As a vlogger, there are multiple moments where you take out the camera from your pocket/bag, turn it on, hit record, etc. and I was wondering how it all works with this set up. Do you have to turn on the camera, then the mic, wait for it to sync or something? Sorry for the long Q but I guess the short of it is: how long does it take(and what steps are involved) to get from 'take camera out of bag' to 'recording with awesome audio'?
You’re welcome! So glad I helped you out. And thanks for the sub! It’s a great little mic set up. I’m just about to post a Hollyland Lark Max review tomorrow. If budget allows you might consider the Lark Max over the Lark M2. As for your question. I believe the mic system stays on even if you turn off the camera. I will be doing another video where I compare the Lark M2 vs the Lark Max. I’ll confirm this when I get my hands on the M2 again very soon. But the battery life is pretty good on these systems. So you should be good for a solid couple hours before needing to recharge the microphones. So you could keep the power on or simply power the mic system off. You’ll discover what works best for you. Now that I’ve used multiple wireless systems I’m never really concerned about power with the mics because they recharge so quickly in their charging case. Obviously within limit. If I were on a multi day hike or just out where power consumption was a concern then I’d obviously be trying my best to conserve power on all of my devices.
@codylander Wonderful video Cody. I just bought the Light Dome III after watching it and I had a question. I’m using it with the Amaran 200XS. Shooting with a Canon R5 in manual mode. Are you shooting typically at a high ISO in the studio and then using a small amount of power from the key light, or vice versa?
That you so much! Can’t wait for you to try out the Dome iii! The new design really is great. This question deserves an entire video explaining some of the details. Short answer. I try to keep my ISO as low as possible. Especially when we are shooting serious/commercial projects. When we don’t have all of the light or power we need we then rely on pushing the iso higher or in some cases adjusting the shutter depending on the motion in the shot. These cameras are so good now that I’m never too concerned about pushing the iso within reasonable limits. My go to questions with exposure now is “What is most important part/subject for my viewer to see in this frame or scene?” & “Am I preserving the highlights of that subject?” Feel free to ask more questions if this wasn’t clear. Are you shooting in a clog picture profile?
@@codylander. Thanks so much for the quick response. I’m not shooting in Clog, but I am in 4K30, 1/60, f/2.8 and I generally shoot low ISO (around 100 - 400). I know the base ISO for Clog is 800, but I don’t know what is really advisable if you are on standard MP4 recording.
You should be fine if you’re able to keep your iso that low. I think you’ll start to notice the noise when you push up into 800+ iso. I just took a Quick Look at some reviews. It seems that the standard picture profile base iso is 160 and 640. But these iso values are so clean already it will be difficult to see the differences. The dual native iso really applys to shooting log footage. You are correct clog base iso on the R5 is 800 and 3200. Sounds like you are on it and shooting quality videos already. I wouldn’t be too worried about breaking some of the rules if you need. I used to be really hard on myself to keep everything perfect. But at the end of the day the viewer can hardly notice the difference between proper motion blur etc. While shooting standard I make sure to nail my exposure and color balance in camera because I won’t have much wiggle room in editing when compared to a log profile.
have you done any enhancements to the audio in post production or is it all raw?
Great question! This is raw unprocessed. I think it sounds great. I know it sounds even better with a few adjustments.
@@codylander Thanks for answering! One more question is - I am not getting audio input when I connect this mic to ace pro. What could be the issue?
No problem! I’m here to help you. 👍🏼 Are you using the 3.5mm mic adapter for the Acepro?
@@codylander yes , I checked everything and eventually returned the mic 🥲
@@curiouslywithjigs oh no 😬 Were you able to connect another microphone to your camera?

This was so much fun to shoot. It took us a few tries to get the group circle. Love insta360 cameras 👍🏼
Nice video. Considering the case, but my only issue is that im 6'5'' and think i will need to bend to pull the case around and will struggle.
I’m 6’3”. I have to admit I do find myself wanting a longer handle. I’ve used a variety of cases and they all seem to be the same dimensions. I’ve even considered making my own 3”-5” extension with a wooden dowel and some parachord. But Nanuk 935 fits me just enough that it’s not the biggest issue for me. As for cases it’s definitely better than the Pelican options. But if you need to save money Pelican isn’t bad.
@@codylander Thanks for your reply. The Nanuck would be ideal in many way, except for the handle extension. Will keep looking.
I haven’t searched specifically. But if you and I are having this issue I’m sure many other people are also. Maybe we should design an extension for the Nanuk?
Hello, can these microphones be combined \ connected to a GoPro hero12? Thank you
I just did a quick search. Yes you can connect this microphone system to GoPro. You’ll need the 3.5mm microphone adapter. It’s a bit more of a set up than this AcePro.
Great video. Very easy to see what they each do. And, I like the cat (visible at 1:45, 9:55, and again at 13:00).

@@codylander Well...I'm kind of new to this world... hence still shooting on my iPhone 14 Pro Max but will keep this video in mind! What a valuable asset you have with Hank and his amazing shop!
Nothing wrong with shooting on a smartphone. I still use my iPhone 14 Pro all of the time. Even in some of my travel commercial work I’ll sneak some shots from the iPhone into the edit. The best camera is the one you have with you. 😝👍🏼
@@codylander I like that! Well said!
Hi Cody (again) - just to clarify... I think I will need the adapter + a mount to attach my M2 to the Ace Pro because it cannot connect via bluetooth like the DJI correct?
Yes and no. For the way I have it mounted yes you’ll need the 1. Quick release mount 2. Cold shoe adapter. However I’ve been using a selfie stick/tripod made by smallrig that has a cold shoe adapter on the selfie stick. So I find myself not using the cold shoe adapter as much. But they are fairly cheap and some situations you might find yourself wanting/needing it. I’m hoping if/when they come out with a mark ii version of the acepro that it has the mic capabilities updates.
@@codylander gotcha. I also have on order, the PGYTech Mantis Z Pod 2.0. Maybe this will come with some kind of mount for my M2 mic…
I just took a Quick Look at the mantis 2.0. Looks like it has the rotating cold shoe on it! You should be good to go! The only issue might be that the 3.5 cable for the lark M2 might be a little short. But those are cheap and easy to replace with a longer one.
@@codylander Very very helpful Cody! Really appreciate your input! Subscribed!
@@sidzhottake You got it!! I’m here to help you out 🫡👍🏼
I just got mine. I got the white. The app is also great as well.
It’s a great mic! Let me know if you have any questions. 👍🏼
Using beauty dish cause any problem for the light...? Like over heat or burn the led....?
This is a good question. No we have never had any issues with over heating or the beauty dish causing damage. I know we have had the Amaran 300c powered on for hours on end with 0 issues. I cannot speak for other lights or beauty dishes. But I’ve never heard of it being an issue. The only light I have ever had issues with was the Zhiyun x100 first version. I actually just posted a video talking about that issue. The video is about the Amaran 60x S.

I’m happy to help! Let me know if you have any more questions. 🙏🏼
Drop any and all settings you used with this combo!!! Looking to buy an external mic for my Ace Pro and your video has been the BEST sounding one thus far!
Thanks! It’s a great combination. What settings are you looking for? I think in this video I had everything set to auto and I was using the “Pure video” mode. It helps in low light scenarios.
@@codylander Nice! Did you change any of the audio settings on the Ace Pro or receiver or just plug in and start shooting?
Just plug in and start shooting. I adjust the audio level/sensitivity of the lark m2 depending on the situation. But I found the low setting worked great if you’re mounting the mic in the chest area.
Limpia la camara de celular 🤢
It was cleaned before almost every shot. Maybe you’re just seeing the lower quality of the iPhone in lowlight scenarios. Thanks for the constructive comment!
thank you so much for this video, im completly new when it comes to lighting and just got the amaran 200d. i started getting quite demotivated when i saw that just the Spotlight Attachment is another 400€. good to see you're able to get work done with the basic equipment and some creativity!
I do have to say that the fresnel adapter is worth it if you’re going to recreate fake sun often. But if it’s just an every once in a while technique then you can just get by with the reflector.
@@codylander Gotta say that recreating fake sun light is the only reason I want lighting at all, especially some streaks on the wall or faking windows 😁 just ordered a fresnel aswell!
@@lecanius The fresnel is a great addition! You’ll love it. You can also take a look at the Amaran Spotlight SE. We use it constantly at work. 👍🏼
@@codylander would be interested in the difference of the fresnel and the Spotlight se since the spotlight is 4x as expensive
@@lecanius I’ll make a video all about this. 👍🏼 Keep an eye out for that in the coming weeks. As you can see in this video we are taking that wide beam of light and narrowing it with the reflector. Then we can take that a step further with the fresnel. The spot light is that next level of narrowing. The spotlight SE starts to look like a big clunky camera lens. The glass elements are very smooth and you can actually focus them. Also there is a “gobo” set that allows you to display a variety of textures onto your surface.
I have this mic and I put the windscreen and definitely didn't protect from wind. Audio kept clipping so bad .
How strong was the wind? Were you using the smartphone receiver or the camera receiver? Did you set your levels or just turn it on and go?
@codylander wind was about 7-10 mph I had it on the first level and the wind screen .
@codylander and using reciever connected to a canon camera
@@torresharbin You’ll have 2 ways to adjust your audio levels. 1st on the lark m2 receiver. Low middle and high. 2nd on your canon. If this level is set too high on your camera it doesn’t matter what wind protection you use. You can still clip the audio.
@codylander yea I set the audio on my canon pretty low where my voice was a bit too quiet with normal talking but wind kept clipping but I'll keep trying thanks for responding!
Great audio tests! Ironically, I just ordered the SAME setup then saw your video. Ace Pro and M2. Cool you are in China. My channel is out of Korea. Cheers bud!
It’s a great option. Such a capable action camera. This mic has got to be the best bang for buck option right now.
Thank you!
You’re welcome 😁
You are wrong the ratios of iphone is not like this
Which part are you having trouble with?
Thanks, Cody! How would you go about creating 3-4 "slices," rather than just the 2 that you profiled here?
For 3-4 you’ll need to use photoshop. I’ve tried to do it with Lightroom mobile but still haven’t figured it out. Also I know there are some apps that make it quick and easy. I haven’t found a free one though.
Very usefull ! Thank you cody 💯
Thank you Sya! Its a really useful light for studio and on the go work.
The main difference between white vinegar and apple cider vinegar is that white vinegar is distilled, containing exclusively acetic acid (the acid used for cleaning) and water. Apple cider vinegar contains carbohydrates, vitamins and other water soluble minerals that may leave residue. You're best off cleaning with white vinegar. White vinegar tends to be more potent up to 7% acetic acid, while apple cider vinegar is 5-6% acetic acid.
Thanks for clearing this up! I’ll pick up some white vinegar for my next cleaning. 🙏🏼
@@codylander oh and also the difference between corrosion and rust is that rusting is a form of corrosion, but exclusive to iron and iron alloys (like steel) when the surface comes into contact with water and air. Corrsion requires surface exposure to air or chemicals on a ceramic, polymer or metal. Both result in oxidisation.
Thanks! 🙏🏼
Great tips! Thanks for sharing Cody! 😊
Thank you! Glad it was helpful! More on the way. 👍🏼
Coolest trip ever! Glad that I found out how fun it is working with the insta360 ! Shout to Aki
It was so much fun! 🤩 I learned so much and made some amazing new friends like you!!
which stand do you recomend for the amaran 150c?
I’ve used cheap aluminum stands and some of the top brand c-stands. You could get by with using and aluminum stand as long as it’s legs/base is wide enough to take the load. If you want to boom the light over subjects I’d recommend a proper c-stand with some sandbags to keep your light and models safe. You can take a look in the description of this video to see a few options. 🫡
Which insta camera you recommend to bring to a water festival? (E.g. waterbomb festival or s2o festival)
If you don’t have a 360 camera yet I’d recommend the new x4. The x3, x4, ace, acepro, and go3 are all waterproof. They are all great tool for creative videos. Let me know if you have anymore questions. 😁
Which insta camera you recommend to bring along water festival (e.g. waterbomb festival/ s2o festival)?
How would you recommend to mount the x3 for rafting and hiking (hands free)?
Does the raft have a frame? Are you using it in white water? What class? For hiking hands free you could mount the 360 camera to your backpack. There are really so many ways to mount the cameras. Just depends on what mounts you have.
@codylander For the backpack, do you mean just wrap it around the straps? Or that special backpack mount that they sell? As for the raft I am not sure as my friend made the reservations but I am guessing no frames.
@@kead6636 for hiking you could mount it on a selfie stick and have it coming up from behind you out of the backpack. That would give a top down style shot. If you want a POV perspective you could get a mount to attach it to the shoulder straps. But the selfie stick is my favorite way to capture video. For rafting. I’d check to see if they will allow you to bring your own camera. Some companies might have some restrictions. But if you’ve never been or aren’t taking your own boat I’d recommend a helmet mount. I did a summer of raft guiding on class 4-5 rapids in Washington. It can get pretty bumpy at times and the instructor is going to be needing you to paddle. If it’s a chill float then you could probably just take the selfie stick with you and get some nice shots. The challenge with that is where will the camera be in between uses? It would be lame to lose the camera on accident. All of that to say I’d just check with the company. 👍🏼
@@codylander Clear enough, thanks!

I’m guessing you’ll have to buy a new one.
Great video, it should have more views. Will definitely ask you certain things ☺️
Thank you! Hopefully I can help you out!!
Have you seen the review about insta 360 corruption. You Tubers are boycotting them not because of their cameras but their business practices. Well known You Tubers have removed all of their videos. The only way for them to recover is to drop their prices significantly. They are not going to fix this with PR. My advice is to drop the price of the x4 and ace pro to reinvigorate the brand. Money talks.
I have seen some reviews on this. I’m located in Taipei, Taiwan. So the contact of the brand that I deal with is a completely different team than the creators in the USA or elsewhere in the world. So for me I feel strange about it because my experience is quite the opposite. The only pressure I have ever felt from the team I’m working with is to tell you (the viewers) a list of specs. But that’s a very common practice now that I’m a little more seasoned with product review. As to how they will fix the issue I don’t know. All I know is insta360 is a great product. Nothing is perfect but there is a reason I’m constantly taking it with me. 👍🏼
Thx Cody for share this with us~ mayba next time u can add timeline and chinese title , it helps me alot
Thank you 🙏🏼 Unfortunately the Mandarine subtitles are slow and a bit expensive to add to a video of this length.
