Very interesting that he uses his left pinky on the holes - not seen that before. Is that just because it’s a small chanter? I have a C set that I struggle to fit my fingers on, so might give it a go!

We've had four Golden Retrievers in our family all named after places of beauty in Scotland, Rannoch after Kinloch Rannoch, Rhummi after the Isle of Rùm, Rhanza after Lochranza, and our current one, Raasay after this island, we plan to take him to the island at some point - an excuse to tour the distillery too...

Almondbank was the home of three generations of my extended family, and my own weekend home throughout my childhood. How wonderful it is that technology now allows you to share these moods - many of which I have been fortunate enough to experience first hand over the past half-century and more. Many thanks for sharing some of yours.

Thanks again, my friend. Are you native to the area? My grandmother's family lived at Bridgeton from 1917; my mother's generation were all raised there and I am the first member of the third generation - and we spent all my childhood and teenage weekends there; hence I know it all very well. Having done the longer walk you mention about ten years ago (with friends eager to see the bluebells at Craigengall), I was slightly horrified to see all those direction signs had appeared in Methven Wood... Of course, it's great that more people are able to access the countryside - but somehow, it had ceased to become the preserve of those locals who were in the know about these paths - and the need to stay out of the way of Miss Barbara's gamekeeper! Although I was Christened at St Serf's and attended their Sunday school in my earlier years, I wasn't part of the scout group that used Backwoodlands Cottage as their camp - but my late uncle, who was just ten years my senior was - and I well remember going there with him when it was first abandoned, working the water pump by the front door and climbing into the roof-space where he told me they all slept by the warm chimney breast... I wonder if you the answer to this question: by the second set of direction signs at 8.44; did there used to be another path to the rear - through the part of the wood that was felled in the 1970s? I seem to recall this being a narrower path and passing two large evergreens towards that end of it? It connected with the still-extant path that rejoins that which you mention at 8.00 at the point that it doubles back on itself at the top of the ravine... Or is my memory deceiving me?

Many thanks - it's almost 50 years since I've been to Bertha Loch - and I didn't even know that path through what my family used to call "the Black Wid" still existed, as it did become impassible for a while, I seem to recall. If you're able to film some more local walks, such as down to Little Egypt and by Craigengall to Dalcrue whether or not at Bluebell time; that'd be amazing, as I for one probably couldn't manage it now!

That sea is utterly memorable. Even the relentless surge around Skellig Micheal has nothing on the experience of being on Hiort watching it disappear in the midst of a North Atlantic oceanic swell. Superb filming and editing the contrasting modes of sky and sea breathing.

Not many people are aware of the fact that during the summers of 1957 and 1958 a detachment of approx 300 RAF personnel from the Airfield Construction Branch 5004 Squadron (mostly RAF National Servicemen) worked from April to September each year building the road to the top of the mountain and all the Military buildings and infrastructure. They lived in tents under arduous conditions (at times most of the tents and their contents were completely blown away) and in serious inclement weather the Servicemen took shelter in solme of the old stone cleats). They worked for 6 days each week and It is recorded that these conditions led to 2 mutinies taking place. A quarry was opened and material for the roads and other buildings blasted. When the quarry blasting took place up to a million birds took to the air ! Their link to the mainland was by 2 x 800 ton flat bottomed front opening Royal Navy tank landing craft vessels, manned by ROAC Army crews, who made the hazardous trips from the military port at Cairnryian as and when weather permitted. Loving seeing the places of my childhood. The Den was always fun, there was a clay mine as we called it, could make things out of it and dry them. Not so fond of the Lynedoch Obelisk as I sprained my ankle when I came down in a rain storm...meant I graduated on crutches. Now in NZ it was wonderful to see them again. Was supposed to be back this year but Covid put an end to that, many thanks,
