People forget that a chord progression isn’t a song. A loop isn’t a song. People have written songs by figuring out the progressions, melody and lyrics first (before you even worry about production) for a century.

Love your videos and frank, honest approach to disseminating information. It won't sell like yelling "like and subscribe" while telling me what 10 free plugins I need immediately, mind, but c'est la vie. Great shit. Keep it up.

Seems to me that everyone is finally sick of these types of videos within any sphere, let alone the music space. Loads of these response videos against these types of videos are popping up to protect people engaged in creative arts, especially beginners.

For me, so important to work out. Keeps me in good physical shape, and helps my brain. I work a near full time job and do tons of producing in my free time, it's a lot. Also important to take breaks.

Great suggestions. I do walking and occasionally disc golf. Also started to read again. I also recommend curling. It's easy to learn the basics, provides exercise and you'll meet a wide variety of people.

ADHD music producer here too. Whenever someone asks me about my hobbies I just answer "all of them." I also get brutally bored of hobbies so I'll tell 'em "I already completed guitar. I'm doing synthesizers now." Etc. I bet you can relate lol

i must admit i don’t get this write song after song thing , i keep going back to my lyrics refining them , my chords progressions my melody’s refining them until the songs good , if it’s a turkey i bin it , but a good song may take weeks or months

Based on the complete garbage of a crap show I see AI generating in the software engineering space, this is one buzzword phase I cannot WAIT to be over. AI is making people tired in just about every vertical, not just music

The plastic surgery one could be called the "Autotune Paradox" since it's in a fitting context. These days, everyone uses some kind of pitch correction. If you can tell that someone has been using autotune, the artist 100% used it as a stylistic choice with no intentions of hiding it. Yet those artists usually get critiqued while others with much more editing done to their voice won't get hate at all. While teaching a lesson on autotune, I got asked how common autotune is these days and if the band BTS uses it as well. She had a small crisis after, haha. (Btw, I'm using the word "autotune" as an overall term for pitch correction as a whole here. Most of the time, vocals will actually be manually pitchcorrected)

From my experience the best thing to provide the mastering engineer with is the mix as you have it without your limiter + with your limiter.

The idea of going to the associated minor for the chorus helped me (and has me wondering what other choices there are, so I’ll spend some time listening to songs to see different chorus choices people make - and how often the associated minor is used!). Now I’m wondering how to break out of a two loop repeat and come up with something for the bridge… where’s that confounded bridge? Any suggestions?

Speaking about computers. What if you already have one of the fastests setups possible, but your system still crashes and you have to freeze literally everything just to be able to hear. what you're working with?

Yeah man, a good computer (spec’d out if you can afford it) is a wonderful thing. I’ve saved many hours and reduced stress by having a computer that can process quickly and not freak out with a lot of plugins and tracks

4. You are probably losing work because you completely changed a part on someone else's song because you thought it sounded better. It isn't your music even if you think it sucks. Had that happen to me. Will not ever go to that guy again.

A nice series that gives an insight into the mindset of busy productive producers is Music Tech's 'My Forever Studio' podcast. Where they bring in guest artists, producers and engineers, and ask them to specify their dream forever studio. It's location, a computer, a DAW an audio interface and 6 other items. As you describe in your first point, the guests on the whole are pretty adamant about a top of the line DAW. After that, it's usually instruments and mics they are fussy about. Interfaces, preamps, comps, EQs, tape, even effects aren't given as much importance.

saying gear doesnt matter has clearly never felt the magic of writing the lickiest of licks after getting a new amp or reverb. so much of music is inspiration, and so much of our inspiration is loving the sound as we're using it imo. good gear is crucial to consistently great songwriting imo
