Will Reparations Solve Slavery's Injustices? - OUR NEWS - Keu Reyes
The topic of reparations for slavery is a complex and contentious issue that has been debated for decades. Reparations refer to compensating the descendants of enslaved people for the injustices and enduring impacts of slavery. The history of slavery is a brutal chapter that forcibly brought millions of Africans to the Americas, where they endured inhumane conditions and forced labor. Despite the abolition of slavery in the 19th century, its repercussions continue to affect the descendants of enslaved people today, manifesting in systemic racism, economic disparity, and social inequality.
Advocates for reparations argue that it is a moral obligation to acknowledge and rectify the historical injustices committed against enslaved people and their descendants. They draw parallels to Germany’s reparations to Holocaust survivors, illustrating a precedent for compensating victims of atrocities. Beyond the moral responsibility, there is the issue of economic justice. Slavery significantly contributed to the economic development of Western nations, yet the descendants of enslaved people often remain economically disadvantaged. Reparations, therefore, could address the wealth gap that has persisted for generations.
Moreover, reparations are seen as a step towards healing and reconciliation. They could serve as a form of apology and acknowledgment, fostering a sense of healing akin to the efforts of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa, which aimed to heal the wounds of apartheid through acknowledgment and reparation.
However, the path to reparations is fraught with challenges. One of the main concerns is the logistical complexity of determining who qualifies for reparations and the amount of compensation that should be provided. This leads to questions about fairness and feasibility. Additionally, there is a fear that reparations could exacerbate existing social and political divisions, potentially fostering resentment or further polarizing society. Some argue that instead of direct reparations, efforts should focus on policies that address systemic inequalities, such as education reform, job creation, and healthcare access.
The potential implications of implementing reparations are significant. Economically, reparations could lead to boosts in economic activity as recipients invest in education, housing, and businesses. However, funding reparations would require substantial financial resources, raising questions about taxation and budget allocation. Socially and culturally, reparations could contribute to a broader societal shift towards acknowledging and addressing historical injustices. They might also inspire other marginalized groups to seek redress for past wrongs.
As we continue to grapple with the legacy of slavery, it is essential to have informed and respectful discussions about reparations. Whether through direct compensation or broader policy measures, the goal remains to create a more just and equitable society. The debate over reparations for slavery is multifaceted, involving moral, economic, and practical considerations. While there are compelling arguments on both sides, the discussion itself is crucial in addressing the enduring legacy of slavery. By understanding the historical context and the various arguments, we can better navigate this complex issue and work towards solutions that promote justice and equality.

So slavery becomes forced labor , from being kidnapped to illegal immigration
it will really only work if you take it to the international world court in the Hague and sue all of the nations that participated in the international slave trade , from the black tribes who sold slaves to the arabs , who then sold to the Portuguese , who to the dutch jews who to the rest of the crazy eye'd white euro devils , if it doesn't go to hague it's not gonna happen
They give reparations to every other group except bl people.
Isn’t it strange? The new upcoming generation doesn’t even know what Reparations are.
Reparations are an ethical practice.. So we are asking the govt to be ethical towards people they marginalized?
Who should we ask? It's beyond ethical. It's a matter of a lawful contract having being breached by the government. Or maybe all the buildings and industries created from slavery be torn down and allow people that benefited to start from scratch just like the slaves were expected to? That would even the playing field, wouldn't it?
what the hell do you think 60 years and counting of affirmative action is?
Something designed to help white women.
So 1 Black person getting 1 out of 1000 jobs somewhere as a "we are sorry we marginalized you" settlement has righted all the wrongs?
Take away who pays for the reparations aside. What do you think the government would actually give. This $6 million number we keep hearing people want for every man woman and child ain’t happening. Let’s get over that, no government is that rich, even ours. So let’s give a real number. One time payment of $50K to the head of each household. Sounds great right? Now wait. 50K is a lot of money, be a nice down payment on a house or a nice investment. I own a home so I would put it in a 401K. Let it build wealth. If I was a renter I would put it down on something. Most won’t because after the down payment you got a huge mortgage bill. Not fair. $50k now you gotta pay income tax at the end of the year. There goes 20% right away. Now the $5k on wasteful spending. Then the family vacation takes $10k, now watch the other $25k go on a car. All is gone and then everyone complains that they got screwed even though they got free money. Want to really make a difference and stop excepting people to sit around the governments table looking for taxpayers crumbs and free money? Offer free tuition to state schools for every African American currently alive as of today. Now you have given people a way to better themselves. And even better they would have done it themselves.
Let me know if it is going to happen. I will invest heavily in Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Hennessey, jewelry, Rim Manufacturers, and cruise liners.
I recognize your tone. Haven't even gotten in the airplane and already thinking it's going to crash. Sure.
Steve outfits 😂
When I got my PhD in 1991, they had affirmative action, so all universities were told they could hire new faculty as long as it was a woman or a minority. Are minorities and women going to reimburse me for the career I was cheated out of after eight expensive years of college? I expected to earn 100K/year for the past 33 years, so I am owed 3.3 million dollars. Pay up or shut up.
Never going to happen my ancestors on fathers side came from Germany in the 1700 lived in up state P.A.never owned slaves my mother people came from Italy early 1900 slavery was over they never owned a slave. Plenty of black people did we'll for themselves Stop the victim mentality..
Stop the guilt mentality (if you're innocent)
LOL its robbery from those who never owned slaves to give to those who never were slaves.
Pretty sure the government would be responsible for paying out. Unless you are saying they are innocent?
@@seiryux04 Very sure the Government means the tax payers. Tax payers who again did not own slaves being forced to give to those who were never slaves. This is just Marxist wealth redistribution and has nothing to do with reparations. Marxism and everything that comes from it should never be tolerated.
@@seiryux04 His point is, who is the government getting the money from?
@@MrWillicat1 I see, so because they most likely would use tax money rather then taking the loss. You see it as the people. Black folk would basically be paying their own representation. Yall got a point.
It is the Government, state and federal that passed all those laws discriminating against Black people. That is your "robbery". Slavery was just the beginning (or second) of your rap sheet.
I know you can't tell by my picture but I'm African American. Let me state just for the record, IF... America wants to truly start the healing process AND YOU'RE NOT BULLSHITTING! You start by HONORING YOUR OWN DAMN PROMISES!! You know the biggest problem?... This could have been taken care of 100 years ago!!! THIS IS A FIXABLE PROBLEM!!! IT COULD BE FIX RIGHT NOW!!! Literally everyone else who was screwed over by THIS GOVERNMENT has been made whole financially EXCEPT AFRICAN AMERICANS!! and until America honors what it agreed too it will continue to look like the Lying Liers who Lie! Honor what you said you'd honor and we can all get on with it!
Reparations is actual proven victims being compensated by their actual violators. Forcing the innocent to pay nonvictims for something that happened to neither of them is not reparations. If you aren't out anything; You aren't owed anything.
For real reparations: they identify an actual victim of the offense in question. They specify the abuses and damages. They assign a dollar amount for their compensation. They pay the victim. If the victim is deceased; they identify the closest living legal heir and pay them. What is the name of the victim that you are trying to collect the unpaid reparations for?
If people can prove they are descendants of US-based slavery, something should be done to level the playing field. Native Americans got land for the atrocities agains them (not very good land, but they got something).
@keureyes The tribes get treaty based international aid. What nation would you like to pay aid to? The only Equality we are entitled to is Equal Protection Before The Law.
The survivors of the Tulsa massacre clear all of your stipulations, and yet they were still denied restitution. The jig is up, people like you don't want any reparations payed out because you don't see anything wrong with our mistreatment.
You passed laws discriminating against Black people. ALL BLACK PEOPLE. And you did this for over two hundred years.
A contract was breached,@@michaelpcoffee. There's no way around that.
Forcing the innocent to pay nonvictims for something that happened to neither of them is not reparations.
Other groups received reparations for injustices against them, should they pay those back and start from scratch?
For real reparations: they identify an actual victim of the offense in question. They specify the abuses and damages. They assign a dollar amount for their compensation. They pay the victim. If the victim is deceased; they identify the closest living legal heir and pay them. That's what others have done. Not groups. Seeing people as groups is your own tribal chauvinism.
@@michaelpcoffee I agree it should not be a "blanket" reparations. But there are still people who can still prove they are direct descendants of slaves. In the next couple generations those people will be gone. So this issue will be impossible to make right. And a few generations after, "slavery" will be consider a "conspiracy theory" in history books. Plus as a country we spend and send money to people in need all over the world. So our own citizens that come from disadvantaged injustices should not?
@@keureyes Just being related to a victim does not make you a victim. If that were the case; we would all be eligible for reparations. The hardships of our ancestors do not incur any debt between us. Either you have suffered tangible harm yourself, or you are the lawful heir of uncollected reparations. Either way; file your claim immediately. You are right; time passed fast. Your appeal to welfare is specious. We have had welfare for several generations.
@@keureyes3.9 million slaves were freed. There are now 41 million African-Americans in the US today. The numbers do not add up anymore. Of the 3.9 million each family ( not person) should have gotten 40 acres. How do you decide who gets what anymore? The how do you decide who pays? My family came here from Italy 110 years ago. Am I exempt? You want change, give free state college to everyone who can prove a direct line alive right now. A good education is worth more than a few dollars.
