But for historical accuracy, Cardinal Erasmus around , around 1520who even though from the Augustinian Order that Luther was from (and Luther looked up to Him), was the one who first did Textual Criticism. In fact He got a Papal Dispensation to leave the Augustinian Monastery to devote himself to Textual Criticism. Cardinal Erasmus found I think 8 Texts across what is today Holland located in Catholic Libraries (these were from the Byzantine family of Manuscripts) and looked for variations to see what they were. From what scholarship notes, Cardinal Erasmus compared those texts to the Latin Vulgate (which was translated from a Western Greek Manuscript Tradition) and he was able to compare it to the Codex Vaticanus, which was already in the Vatican and records of it being there actually go back to the 15th century . So textual criticism really started in the early 16th century. Speaking as a I guess what you all would call a Concilliar Catholic, Historical Criticism is valid in so much as it can help resolve textual variants among the 3 ancient Manuscript Families such as the Latin Manuscript Tradition (which was from earlier Western Greek Manuscripts), the Alexandrian Manuscript Tradition (Codex Vaticanus is in this tradition) and the Byzantine Manuscript Tradition (largest because of improved Greek scripts allowed for quicker and more efficient translations. I have the Haydock Douay Rheims version (reprint), and the regular Douay Rheims version (TAN edition). I got a original Haydock Douay Rheims version dated 1850. I actually love that version very much. Only trouble is the footnotes are hard to read unless I use a magnifying glass. I've seen the Confraternity versions, which aren't too bad, but the Protestants will literally quote passages, and they softened all the original hard language to make it seem less severe, especially in Romans I. That's a travesty.

Two and half years ago I was very lost and my job is challenging. I wandered into the church of my Grandma - the Episcopal Church. I was angry and not ready to accept God. It was a rough time. All I can say is God offered me a hand out of the mess. I know he hears and answers this Protestant’s prayers. And funny thing is that I am now in OCIA and will likely be Catholic by Christmas. What a gift.
