    We just had this happen and what I don't understand is that the drain pan was entirely dry. How did the line from the drain pan get clogged if the pan was dry?

      Maybe you caught it before it started overflowing into the secondary pan. Did you get a lot of sludge out when you sucked it out?

      @@mechanicsfornonmechanics8998 Our system was shutting down during the afternoon, but would come back online late evening. The pan was dry so I didn't even think it was a drain problem. The tech visited (I couldn't be home then), diagnosed a drain problem, and cleaned the drain until it worked. But I guess I don't understand -- I though the drain was from the pan and if the pan was dry then how could it be a drain problem? I think maybe I misunderstood the way the system works and instead the drain system looks like this. Primary drain line which goes directly from the unit to our upstairs back. In that line there's a float to indicated a clogged line so (as in my case) that inline float turned the unit off (so that's why there was no water in the pan). The pan is the second failsafe. If the inline float doesn't work, water goes into the pan and out to a pipe ending outside our home. There's a float in the pan which acts as a failsafe on that system so that if water fills the pan, then that will also turn the system off. Am I close? [It'd be great if you did a video showing all the parts of the a/c drain system and walked through how each part worked and how they work together.]

    I flipped off my breakers and my air conditioner and nothing happened. Are you sure I wasn't supposed to use my index finger or maybe throw the peace sign? (Lol.. Jk - people are dumb enough these days where it's hard to discern from sarcasm - I felt I needed to include the fact I was joking lol) Seriously though, my window AC is garbage. It's basically just like a $900 fan now. I'm in Arkansas and it's the middle of August so it's 100+ degrees everyday. But I work in a sawmill that's in an uninsulated metal building and we all work on the second floor where all the heat is trapped (ground level is mainly hydraulic tanks and wood chips on conveyor lines) and if I'm not mistaken, my supervisor told me they took the temperature in there last summer and it was supposedly like 150 or 160 degrees in there - like it's always 30+ degrees hotter inside than outside - when we walk outside for break, even the 110+ degrees feels like Antarctica just having a little breeze/fresh air... Seems like you'd die at that temperature but even living in Arkansas and growing up playing football and working in the log woods (I supposedly had a heat stroke in the log woods a few years ago), farms, plants, factories, mills, etc. and being very familiar with stifling, oppressive heat and humidity, the heat in this sawmill in an uninsulated metal building with machines everywhere putting off heat and even vapor/steam from the wood and almost no airflow is something I had never felt. It's a wholly different experience/feeling and there is a new sensation that you don't get from just regular heat - it's like the air in there is some kind of solid material and there's kind of a crushing and suffocating feeling... Almost everyone in the mill gets to work in cabs with ice cold ACs but I'm one of the about 3-4 people who not only have to stand all day but do it with no cab lol.. One of the other guys without a cab got so hot the other day, his eyes glazed over and he was all confused and they had to send him home - something they don't allow very often. But anytime any of my cab dwelling co-workers try to tease me or give me crap about anything, it's a pretty touchy subject - I'm like, "Get your lazy ass out of your comfy chair and out from the AC and get out here and help if you have a problem" lol... But all of that to say, after being in the sawmill all week, just being at home where it's probably 95+ degrees in my house and having an AC to just stir up the air feels pleasant. Though I do fantasize all week about being able to sit under the AC on the weekend at home and it's a pretty big bummer lol... But air conditioning is one of those luxuries that I might be better off learning to live without - like if there's ever a situation where it's just not available for whatever reason I'd already be acclimated.

    I am curious if having just a hvac career certificate from a local college will be enough to have a long and lucrative career? Potentially even starting my own business one day. I am 28 and deciding to go back to school for HVAC. The school I am applying to only offers a 12 month certificate program. I will be applying for an apprenticeship while completing the program. As I develop my skills I am open to relocating to other states for better pay. More so interested in commercial than residential. I know this career will be tough and come with many pros and cons however I am excited to transition into a reliable career that will allow me to become financially stable. Any advice is appreciated.

    • @mechanicsfornonmechanics8998
      @mechanicsfornonmechanics8998 Před 14 dny

      Yeah I started my HVAC career at the age of 30, after meeting my wife, and wanting to be more financially stable. Just take it one step at a time. Especially in SW Florida, there is always a demand for HVAC technicians. Starting out, you will probably have to do some grundoon work. They might throw you up in the attic, doing lots of duct jobs, but just stay in it, have a good attitude, learn all you can, and it won’t be too long before you are moving up to a technician. You just want to try and find a good company that you can grow in. I think your mind set from the beginning should be, how can I learn all that a contractor knows? Just keep learning, learning, learning, because that knowledge will pay dividends 💰💰 good luck and God bless!

    New air conditioners don't use freon. Am I right?

    • @mechanicsfornonmechanics8998
      @mechanicsfornonmechanics8998 Před měsícem

      Yeah the word “Freon” can be (generally speaking) understood as the refrigerant in your AC system, but more technically, I believe Freon refers to R-22 (which is still in many people’s systems), or its predecessor R-12. The newer refrigerant R-410a is not technically, I am pretty sure, referred to as Freon.

      @@mechanicsfornonmechanics8998 Freon is banned. It's going out of style and becoming rare and more expensive. That is why I had to upgrade my system to a new one. Freon has been banned in the U.S. since January 2020, prompting major changes in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industry. You can still use an older air conditioning system that uses Freon, but maintaining and repairing one is growing increasingly expensive.

      Yeah it sounds like your compressor is short cycling. You need to get that capacitor changed out (I recommend by a professional), and then possibly you will be back in business. If the fan does not run, or does not run at full capacity, the compressor is just going to get too hot and just keep shutting off on overload, because it is getting too hot

    Many, perhaps most, of the coil cleaning products contain corrosive chemicals of some sort and varying strengths. Some of the stronger ones will remove paint from painted coils. You should understand that anything containing corrosives is something you do not want on your skin or to inhale the vapors into your lungs. Wear rubber gloves, preferably the kind with long cuffs. Wear a respirator mask with filters rated to remove caustic fumes.

    Question. So the place I work at, it’s a small local business that I guess skips out on routine maintenance for their AC unit. I was told to change the filters, and when I pulled off all three, (it’s a massive unit) the huge coil was completely BLACK. There was clumps of wet, black “gook” every where. This thing is a train wreck. That said, the unit overall looks relatively new. The massive reservoir trough underneath was filled to the brim with slimy, rusty, fungus looking gobs of water. I took a wet vac and sucked it all up. Or as much as I could. Next I’ll pour some bleach or vinegar down the drain lines. Everything is very accessible as it’s suspended up high. Anyway, I told the owner to buy an expanding evaporator coil foam cleaner, but this was before I knew about the self rinsing cleaners. Should I tell her to send the expanding foam cleaner back, in favor of the no rinse? Or, can I use the foam spray and use a wet vac to suck it up? Maybe also use a regular every day spray bottle to lightly spray any residual the vac can’t get. I know the correct way to do this is to hire someone to pull the entire thing out and clean it, but I have little faith they’re going to want to spend that kind of money. This unit is pretty big. At the very least I’m going to run a cleaning kit comb through it to get the exterior junk of it. I don’t know much about this stuff, but from the videos I’ve watched, most of these coils are caked with DRY debris. This particular one is mostly wet. So much so it drips on to the air filters. You’d think whoever was changing the filters before me would question why air filters that are supposed to be dry are partially wet. Anyway, thx for the great video! Sorry for the long question. You seem like you really know what you’re doing so thought I’d ask.

      I’m so sorry but we actually recorded that video about 2 years ago (my son is almost 2:) it just took me a year and a half to get the time to edit the video. So whatever kind of details like that are not included in our video, I couldn’t remember. Good luck!

    LoL you do know the guy who invented the toilet, his name was Tustin Crapper, you could say he turned his good name into 💩🤣 And as a guy who wears a mask to work with harmful chemicals honestly don't wear a mask. Here's why it will keep the smell and bacterias in the mask thus increasing your chances of getting sick. Best thing to do is wear gloves and take them off before you touch ANYTHING other than what your working with.

    One time I got a license plate holders that came with one of those tinted plastic covers and thought it would be nice keeping my license plate clean. I figured everything would be okay since it was sold at the automotive parts store, right? Wrong. Cop pulled me over one night because their headlights were glaring off the clear plastic cover over the license plate and they couldn't read the numbers. I didn't get a ticket or citation but I still had to wait around for 20 mins while the cop ran my plates and license info through their system before they cleared me to go and I was told to take off the cover as soon I got the chance.
