Make Your Data, Numbers, and Statistics More Digestible
A challenge we often encounter in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is explaining technical information to non-technical audiences. In this video I explain why “simplifying” complex concepts is not “dumbing it down.” It’s make it more accessible.

About Me:
I’m Christopher Chin, and I help tech professionals become confident speakers and leaders.
Does this sound familiar:
- You put together slide decks but your audience doesn’t react well to them?
- You’re great at researching, coding, and analyzing. But don’t know where to start with speaking up in meetings and giving presentations?
- You’ve been stuck in your career, unable to get the promotions you deserve, because your managers say you need to work on communication skills?
The truth is communication, presentation, and storytelling are not “soft skills”. They are extremely hard to master yet crucial for success in business and leadership.
I created this CZcams channel and my Hidden Speaker training programs to address exactly those challenges. This is not just any communication course. This is communication for tech professionals by a tech professional. If you're looking for self-paced content to overcome anxiety, speak with confidence, and know how to structure a killer presentation, you’ve come to the right place.

Transcript:
Make sure that you use language your audience understands. And I also want to really pinpoint here that when you change your language to suit your audience you are not dumbing it down. That's something I often hear in the industry is that if we don't talk about all this cool stuff and we just talk about the basic stuff that's dumbing it down. But no I disagree. Because if you think about it, teachers are not dumbing it down for their students. They're making it more accessible for them to understand. It's their responsibility. If you think about color blindness and data visualization you're not dumbing it down by making the colors easy to see for everyone. You're just making it more accessible. So I really want to disband that notion and help it see as: communication is something collaborative. You are meeting people where they are so you can bring them up to the level that you know. You have to do that bridging. That's what communication is all about

How to Tell Data Stories with Dashboards
zhlédnutí 50Před 14 dny
Dashboards are one of the most popular analytical tools to monitor performance and key performance indicators. In this video I break down the 3 ingredients you need to tell effective stories with dashboards: 1. What happened 2. Why it happened/why it matters 3. What exactly I need to do about it Most dashboards only have the first ingredient (or more rarely the second). But you need all 3 ingre...

The Secret to Reducing Speaking Fear: Speak Less!

Stop Being Objective when Presenting Data
zhlédnutí 53Před měsícem
When we analyze data, we do so precisely - in a detail-oriented, scientific way so that our results are “objective”, unbiased, and reproducible. Unfortunately this approach cannot be used when presenting data. In this video I explain why leaders need our presentations to be subjective: to state an expert opinion. If we don’t say why the data matters and what people need to do about it clearly, ...

Introverts vs Extroverts: Who’s Better at Communicating?

A Great Data Presentation Must Start with Why

In data presentations we often start with the “what”: what we did, what we found, what processes we used. That’s not what our audience cares about. Excellent - particularly about knowing it can and must be used for human ends. I made endless slide presentations in a Community College back in the seventies and it was a much more laborious process, but the same communication skills applied. Back then I often had to discourage teachers from putting a regular letter sized typed document on an overhead and expecting them to read it. We had a large print typewriter to help! Plus ca change, plu la meme chose.

    thanks for the explanation even though on your second example you actually have an answer on how long it would take to fix the problem. the first example show that you estimated 2 weeks but you don't know how long it will take vs on the second example you actually know what the problems are and how long it will take to fix this... in the end it is not about how you will be presenting your ideas but actually if you know your issues and how/when it will be resolved

    I liked how you teached both how to make a simple presentation from code and how to prompt chatgpt (3.5!) to achieve it by making it change seats. It would have been interesting to let ChatGPT iterate on this process several times, like update the presentation, review again as the CEO, until it cannot "improve it" anymore. Good job, subscribed ! And I agree : AI is not about making the world colder, it's about teaching us how to be better humans, because we have those models which gather a lot of wisdom and knowledge that can benefit anyone. We live in such a world where this is possible, having a "program" which knows a LOT of things, and which can help us reason and think better by giving us insights, help and assistance. It's nothing short from amazing :)

    • @TheHiddenSpeaker
      @TheHiddenSpeaker Před 2 měsíci

      That’s fair. I’ve presented dashboards to people that made probably three times my salary. I think of it this way: while we might not make as much as leadership, we’re helping them make business decisions that often affect the health of the entire company. They make the amounts they do because of that primary responsibility, and it is our secondary responsibility to guide them in making those decisions

    • @TheHiddenSpeaker
      @TheHiddenSpeaker Před 2 měsíci

      The MARP tool lets you export as a PDF, HTML, or PPTX (Powerpoint) file. Important note though for the PPTX file: the PPTX file contains pre-rendered images rather than text you can edit. As a workaround, I recommend the following steps: 1. Use MARP to export to PDF 2. Use this free tool from Adobe to convert from PDF to PPTX: www.adobe.com/acrobat/online/pdf-to-ppt.html 3. Edit the resulting PPTX as you normally would (you can now edit text and move it around to make space for images/branding) It's a bit clunky but gives you the flexibility you need

    So here is an exception for me. Often during competitions (not business presentations), the number of slides allowed is limited between 10-12. In that cases, I would rather remove the table of contents to fit one more key element of the presentation.

    • @TheHiddenSpeaker
      @TheHiddenSpeaker Před 3 měsíci

      That's a great perspective for slide design, especially in those competition scenarios. I would add that you don't even need to have a slide to discuss the agenda. As long as you verbally say something that the audience should expect or look forward to during the presentation, you've set them up for an engaging experience.

    Another really good tip (which few speakers actually DO) : when someone asks a question ----REPEAT the question back at the audience - most will NOT have heard it, and it gives the speaker a chance to make the question clearer. why are filters on the left not on the right?

    • @TheHiddenSpeaker
      @TheHiddenSpeaker Před 10 měsíci

      Here is my take on the layout (the original designer Nicholas Kelly might have a different philosophy behind it, so the thoughts below are my own rationalization): People read visual-heavy media top to bottom and left to right. So ideally the first thing they should see on a dashboard are the top KPIs: those are the numbers that drive decision making. Filters, on the other hand, don’t give information. They facilitate the delivery of information. So placing them to the side on the left ensures they’re still easy to access, but don’t occupy the prime real estate at the top reserved for the critical numbers.

    • @User-vz4xm
      @User-vz4xm Před 10 měsíci

      @@TheHiddenSpeaker Thanks for your reply. Do you recommend to place the filters on the left? cos people are used to have them on the right, which is more intuitive.

    • @TheHiddenSpeaker
      @TheHiddenSpeaker Před 10 měsíci

      @@User-vz4xm, when I teach dashboard design I generally recommend the right-hand-side. This is my reasoning: since left takes precedence when we read visual media, the most important elements (charts and KPIs) should be on the left. Elements that are not as important for conveying information should be on the right (such as filters). Several organizations I've worked with do, however, interestingly have a left-hand-side preference for filters (I believe this happens because navigation panes tend to be on the left for websites and online shopping sites). If filters are on the left, that is totally ok (they should be where the audience is used to expecting them). But I recommend making them in a clearly separated area, or even collapsible at the click of a button if possible.
