Thank you for an extremely interesting dialogue. I am Greek Orthodox and I love my Church. I am also homosexual and have been in a monogamous relationship for 38 years. It was sexual love, and I pull that word, 'love', from my heart, for at least 25 of those years, but it is now the blessed harmony of understanding, sharing and support, without the lust which was important when it was there. But we have only come to this serenity through that combination of desire and love. And we have more than I witness in the cases of many heterosexual couples, whose only experience of Christianity is a wedding in a Church, the party afterwards and, frequently, the divorce. In many cases, there is never a 'marriage'. My partner and I are Civil Partners. That is our marriage. It is a legal and emotional bond. I am totally against same-sex marriage within any Christian Church, but there is much obfuscation here. Indeed, the damning charges of paedophilia and homosexuality in the Roman and Anglican Churches are a blight from the evil one, but there are also many examples of homosexuality within the Orthodox Church, and to pretend that marriage is the solution is disingenuous to say the least. I know many Orthodox priests, at least two of them Archimandrites, and some married, who are basically homosexual. They do not all give into carnal expression of this, but some do. One, a distinguished surgeon, living with his male lover, in every sense of the word, suddenly rediscovered the Orthodox Christian Truth, and they both renounced their former lives and became monks, one becoming the Gerontas of a monastery of great spiritual strength and spiritual influence. Metropolitan Hilarion is correct when he says that homosexuality is a sin, and all sins must be forgiven if there is repentance. There are far too many Pharisees and far too many Publicans in this matter and we forget that we are all humans in need of forgiveness.

You can't understand the situation if you don't study the destruction of the Greek orthodox population of Turkey since 1942 (Varlik Vergisi, 1955 pogrom, 1960s expulsion, Turkey considering that the Patriarch must be a Turkish citizen). The Patriarch of Constantinople is seeking for protection because all those measures made him weak. I believe the best solution would be for the Patriarch to leave Turkey to be more free. But if he does that, some other churches will consider he's not legit anymore. If Moscow had shown a will to protect the Patriarch of Constantinople, the relationship between Constantinople and Moscow would have been better. This has not been done and as a consequence, Constantinople is trying to find recognition through a bigger leading role, and they hope the US will protect Constantinople.

Teach them to sow their own seeds and give back to the church roughly 10% who is run by honest people who do not squander the gift and cherish the Eucharist as the holy food of the saviour. This was always the intended meaning. Anyone who is in need should be able to go to the church and receive as little as necessary to aid them in continuing on their pilgrimage or to begin working in the town.
