How Root Cause Probing Improves Medical Device Design
It’s no secret that the number of medical devices on the market is increasing drastically. As product designers, we have a responsibility to make sure the medical devices coming to market are safe. That means predicting misuse and trying to proactively prevent it.
While product designers always want to mitigate misuse, the stakes are higher for medical devices. For these products, a use error can have serious safety consequences for the user or patient. User errors can also lead to product recalls, damaging profits and brand trust.
In order to prevent misuse, it's important to understand what errors might occur and why. In this Design Defined video, Senior Usability and Human Factors Researcher, Trisha Ambe, explains Root Cause Probing, one of the principles designers use to prevent misuse in medical devices.

How Affordance Makes Medical Devices Safer
zhlédnutí 39Před rokem
Affordance is the relationship between what something looks like and how it’s used. The user should be able to figure out how to use something just by looking at it. Bars on doors are for pushing. Handles on doors are for pulling. (Knobs afford turning, light switches afford flipping, and steering wheels afford turning. … ) This is affordance. As Don Norman puts it, “Good design requires, among...

How 'Forecasting and Backcasting' Enable Disruptive Innovation
zhlédnutí 381Před rokem
Forecasting and backcasting are two techniques that provide a framework for disruptive innovation. That’s the kind of innovation that changes the rules of an industry. Think AirBnB or Netflix. These techniques rest on the principle that disruptive innovation needs visionary direction in order to happen in jumps and leaps, as opposed to in steps. In today’s extremely competitive marketplace, and...

How to Use Mapping to Determine the Design of Your Controls
zhlédnutí 150Před rokem
Mapping is the relationship between controls and their movements or effects. When you turn a wheel, flip a switch or push a button, you expect a specific outcome. Please collect responsibly, know your species before you collect and avoid catching endangered or highly important species. Why? we are (globally) losing our insects at a rate of knots and insects/arthropods in general are what put food on your table, keep pest species under control and feed our birds and other insectivores.

I have been looking to identify an insect I saw over 20 years ago. It had a long narrow body about 2cm. It was brown with a 1cm band of gold across the back. The gold was very bright and shiny. I believe it to be a carrion eating insect as I found two of them on a dead squirrel. Have you seen anything like that in your travels?

Great job with the restoration. The color scheme is pleasing to the eye. Back in '54 or '55 a neighbor across the street had one. I always liked the lines on that vintage of Hudsons. They look to be a super comfortable - a living room on wheels. Immortalized by the 'Driving Miss Daisy' film.

Insect collection was always fun during undergraduate studies. We did it for academic scores but observed and learnt many things apart from the curriculum itself. After insect collection, I was able to tell the location and crop where you can find the particular insect in different seasons. Exchanging of insects with friends was like a big business deal🤭. We used to keep our insect box safe so that no one could steal our gems. Those who find rare or large insects got a different attention and respect from peer.

Mad Scientist, I've been around Hudson's for most of my life and other than the last Hudson's from '55-57 I've yet to see a stepdown Hudson with folding seats. The Nashes of the '50's had that feature and the traveling salesman's hotel nickname.

    • @kevinrussell5099
      @kevinrussell5099 Před 2 lety

And a technical note, the Hornet didn't exist until 1951 and had the 308 cubic inch 6. The inline 8 in your Super came along in 1930 and went out of production in '52 and could be found in the Super or Commodore. If you have fold down seats in your car I'm betting someone found a way to put Nash seats in it. I had a '49 Commodore coupe and a '50 Super sedan and neither had fold down seats.

I started collecting about age 11 thru to age early 30s. Later I moved from collecting to rearing lepidoptera exclusively. Stopped because in the part of California (Carmel)I live there is an insect apocalypse of sorts taking place(pollution, habitat loss etc. etc.) Car grills don't even have dead bugs splattered anymore. Introduced parasitoids to biologically control introduced insect pests have devastated the native silk moth species to the point of being gone. Urban light pollution has also been a problem. Dragonflies are gone in part due to ponds and waterways polluted and coastal sea water intrusion in my area. I turned 50 in June and to see the changes breaks my heart. Insects are rare now.

I would get a good butterfly net(not one of the ones from the dollar tree) and a container to study them in(a plastic tub or one of those butterfly things he has in the background of the video). Then identify them, if you want to you can also right down we’re you found, what day and size. You can try pinning in but that can get hard and expensive. I just take pictures of them. If you want to be super precise ,you can get google earth, find where you found it, and write down the coordinates. I use the Apple numbers app to keep records. I am not an expert in pining so if you want to do that, you can do some research. A method I use is I take a white sheet,(you can staple sticks around the edges to make it easer to hold or have your siblings help if you have any)hold it out under a bush, and hit the bush with a stick. Most of the bugs will fall onto it for you to find. If you have and bright lights like front door ones or a flashlight, set those out at night to attract moths or other insects. You should also learn the different parts of insects. Like the head, thorax, and abdomen. But most of all, don’t get stressed out, just go out and enjoy nature. P.S. Forests and Parks are good places to find insects, and remember to check under rocks and logs.
