Red River Gorge Weekend Backpacking Trip
My friend Scott invited me to join him and a couple of other guys for a weekend trip to Kentucky's Red River Gorge. This is more-or-less what happened.
We started out at Sky Bridge Station, where we had some lunch before driving the short distance to the gate at Rock Bridge Road. It was a nice and easy trip with good company. Enjoy!
Check out our website for a map of the exact location of where we hiked.
Recorded January 25 & 26, 2020.

Tagged! Top-5 Backpack Gear Challenge

I was recently tagged by Adam Thompson in something called the Top-5 Backpack Gear/Tag 5 People Challenge. You may know Adam by this online handle Serial Photog, which he uses on his Instagram and CZcams channels. Check him out. Here's how it works: I count down my five most favoritest pieces of backpacking gear, then tag five other people who will hopefully follow suit. Got it? Good. Here were...
Backpacking the Dolly Sods Wilderness
zhlédnutí 795Před 6 lety
I've looked forward to backpacking Dolly Sods for years, and finally got the opportunity to do it with some good friends over a three-day weekend, October 14-16, 2017, just after the peak fall colors. We started at Bear Rocks, and by the time we arrived there around 10:00 am, the parking lot was full and the trails were choked with hikers. We did a counter-clockwise loop around the perimeter of...

On December 9 - 10, me and my buddy Travis hiked the Cohutta Wilderness, starting at the Hickory Creek trailhead on FS630. The day before, a snow storm made its way through a narrow band of Georgia, dumping 6-10 inches of snow, depending on where you were. The further up the forest service road we drove, the more snow we found. We took the Hickory Creek trail down to the Conasauga River trail a...

That was my favorite spot at the gorge. Honestly I have taken that trail over 150 times. I have slept up there many nights in my younger years. It used to take 45 minutes to walk, the trail you took actually evolved over time and was not always available. I dont want to sound full of myself but we kind of paved the way for that shorter trail. We used to take that route down from cloudsplitter because we had an old garmin gps 3 plus monochrome unit lol. Back when hand held gps 1st came out. The GPS showed us how close we actually were to the road. Lots of downed trees on that slope so we chose to follow the path that the water made on its way down the hill because it was so overgrown back in 1998. Thank you for sharing this video, I miss that place and your video blog took me back there. Seriously, thanks for posting this. By the way if you ever return, there is a natural overhang at the base of a cliff not far off the trail where Indians carved a bowl shape into the stone floor and they also bored a hole for crushing food with a stick. I am sure its probably well overgrown by now, we camped there so often it was findable back then but that all ended around 2001.

I've only done it once, but I think they approached the same way you did. The video is the same as what I remember, except when you get to the rope/tree stump scramble you go to the right instead and climb up some roots in a crevice. I'm pretty sure that's what they're doing at the 5:08 mark. The guy that took me up had us use the rope on the way up and it had been raining all morning. Not fun. On the way back down I noticed the alternate route (to the left coming down), which I took.

@@slucherville1537 The reason I asked, that tree is an old Indian trail marker tree from the late 1700s. The way they are altered is specific to the tribe that made it. Shawnee and Cherokee made them differently ...they are the last remaining signs of those cultures. The tree would have been about 20ft from the modern trail and roughly 1/4 mile from the gravel road (rock bridge Rd). Trailhead is a largish parking area in the bend of the road.

Fun times in the Cohut. 1:06 Little Rough Creek crossing? 1:43 Hickory Creek/Conasauga trail campsite (just below Connie crossing #19). That sign behind you has been stolen and it's gone. 2:45 That weird "pond" near Bray Field. 3:46 Looks like you're on the Panther trail as the sign is behind you (the jct of Panther with Connie). 4:14 Creek blowdowns always suck and this one blocks the Panther Creek trail on the other side of the Connie. (Visible at 4:15 where Panther Creek flows into Conasauga). 5:32 I seem to remember 5 or 6 Panther Creek crossings. 5:50 The beginning of the Panther Creek Hell Nut climb! Have to hand it to you guys---climbing that rock garden in snow with no previous bootprints ain't easy. It's hard to follow this steep haul even without snow. 6:15 What! Where are you camped? 7:51 Looks like you made it to the campsites above the falls. 7:55 Your speech---Welcome to my backpacking world! 8:45 I always carry pruners and a folding saw and stop to clear this kind of crap.

    • @slucherville1537
      @slucherville1537 Před 4 lety

Tipi, sorry I missed this when you posted. Thanks for the comments. Let's see: 1:06 - Not sure, offhand, about the crossing. Don't have a map in front of me. It's on the way down from the parking lot, before we hit the river at the bottom, I believe. 1:43 - Man, I hate when people take signs. That's why we can't have nice things, eh? 2:45 - Loved that "pond"! 3:46 - yep 4:14 - Yeah, my original thought was to somehow use the blowdown for a crossing, but it was way too cold and risky to try. Temps were only in the teens at that point. 5:32 - there were a bunch! 5:50 - It sucked trying to make sense of the trail. I let out a few expletives as I realized we needed to backtrack. What was most frustrating was that my map was incorrect and put the trail on the wrong side of the trail. WTF?! 6:15 - So. That boulder field we were walking up? Well, because of my bad map, I was convinced we needed to be on the other side of the creek (I couldn't get a visual on where trail actually went), so we crossed the creek just below the falls, where a large tree trunk lay and gave us something to anchor to as we crossed the ice and slippery rock. When we got to the other side, we scrambled up the other side and camped just about the falls. 7:55 - Yep. I long ago gave up on the notion of finishing the hike no matter what. We both had jobs to get back to on Monday, and I had a 6-hour drive on top of that just to get home. So, finishing the loop was out of the question, as we could only assume that we would be facing more of the same. 8:45 - yeah, a saw would've been nice! Those blowdowns were deceptively tough to navigate. The limbs are skinny, but they grab onto you and are green and still strong like new rope. One day, I'll go back and do the loop as I originally planned. Looking back, I wish I'd of made the weekend before this when the temps were in the 60s! ;)

The Cohutta looks really nice with all that snow. I was on the Panther Creek Trail in the summer and still got lost on that trail. It was at the point where I went from the bluff over the falls down the bluff -- that's where I couldn't follow the trail, on the way down. I eventually found it somewhere near the bottom. You guys are brave!

Thanks for watching (and the follow). Below that bluff is where we got lost, that final creek crossing before the top. I had a map that incorrectly put the trail on the east/south side of the creek, so I kept thinking we should be there...even though I saw old blazes on the trees on the other side. Where the video stops on day 1 below the Falls is where we crossed and bushwhacked up that bluff to the top. It was crazy. Kept sliding in the snow. Took the better part of an hour to go uphill about 75 yards. Never felt so dumb. :)

Every time I start talking on camera, I pick up the pace and leave Angell behind. :)

My dad had a friend/ neighbor who helped with a dig of an old Indian village that was on the banks of the creek in the early 1970s. It was supposed to be only a few hundred yards from the bridge into the old pope lick park soccer fields off Old Taylorsville Rd. There used to be a farmhouse further back past the parking lot. I think they renamed the road since the Shell station was built on that side of Taylorsville Rd. to Pope Lick Rd. (opposite from the Trestle). I ran around back there in my younger years with a few friends in the early 1980s, never saw the cave back then, it probably was on the farm in the back. The dig items were donated to the Museum according to my dad's friend. Arrowheads can be found up and down that creek in both directions.

+Reagan L. Sorry I’m so late in responding. We’ve been taking a break. We could tell my the old barn and the evidence of a few other buildings that the place has an interesting history. I’d love to know more about it.

+Reagan L. I’m sorry I’m so late in responding. We’ve been taking a break. We could tell from the evidence of some old buildings that the place has an interesting history, not to mention the arrowheads you mentioned. I’d love to know more about it. Thanks for the comment and for watching!

Sorry, but the man's last name was either Smith or Schimitt, I never knew him directly other than through my dad. As I recall he was HAM radio operator too, he lived on Ellis Way in the Hikes Point area. Also, there is the whole Pope Lick Monster legend (Goat man or Sheep Man) associated with the trestle and the tiny shack that stood by the creek under it. Its roots started in the late 1950s and peaked in the 1970s and early 80s. A few teens have died crossing that trestle at night on a dare, thus feeding the legend even further.

+Reagan L. Yeah, I’m familiar with the monster lore and have some friends who are into that big-time. It’s wild how many folks outside of Louisville know about it.
