About the Skull Crawlers, I believe they were somewhat based upon the design of a creepy 2-legged beastie in the Original King Kong from 1933 which tried to get at the Hero Jack Driscol hiding from Kong's Hairy Paw on the edge of the ravine. He had to cut the vine it was creeping up on which attracted Kong's notice of Him.
