Thompson Park Miniature Railway is a paid railway, prices are £2 per adult and £1 per child. They had saver tickets for family’s of 4’s and also super saver tickets.
Firstly I have to start by mentioning the staff/volunteers at this railway. They were all really friendly and made us feel very welcome. They acknowledged the children and had lolly pops for when the kids and adults left the train at the end of their rides. They were all polite and the drivers tooted their horns and waved at the children as they made their way around the park on the rails.
Special mention to Dave who went above and beyond to make Isaac and Sophie’s day. I asked if the railway still had their HST loco and Dave took us across to see it close up which was really nice of him to take the time during this busy period and give us a tour and tell us about the railway and surrounding attractions. You really did make Isaacs day so thank you so much, we will be certainly be back soon whenever the HST is out and running as Isaac asked about it all the way home.
We visited on Sunday 28th July 2024 and the weather was amazing. The railway is located in a beautiful park which is dog free and plenty of space to have a picnic. The grounds are well kept and there is plenty of other activities to do before or after you visit the railway.
There were 4 Locomotives running. 2 steam locos (Fagan & Cegin) and 2 diesel locos (Sir Richard a Union Pacific & Sgt Murpy) later on Another diesel loco Excaliber came on as the railway got very busy. They also have an accessible carriage for wheelchairs.
The track is around 1km long and the ride took around 8 minutes. The journey covers quite a bit of the park and the track layout is pretty good too.
This is easily one of the best railways we have visited and it was extremely well organised, that’s down to the volunteers who were there when we visited.
The railway opened at 12:00 and the last ride is around 15:40. As I mentioned earlier it was pretty busy and even towards the end the 4 trains were still running full on each journey. Full opening times and days is available on their website - www.thompsonparkrailway.co.uk
There is parking located right by the railway but that was full and lots of cars trying to park there when we arrived.
It’s £2.50 all day if you manage to get a space (Council Car Park).
We managed to drive around the perimeter of the park and find parking on a side road at the other end of the park but it was only a 5 minute walk to the railway which passed a splash pool, swing park and Boating lake.
