I think keeping the person involved, interested and even challenged in as normal a way as possible & for as long as possible helps- eg, ask them to help you in the garden or doing a household chore. You will 'supervise' but make them feel they are still contributing something useful and helpful- that you need their input. Feeling useless and having a sense that you are 'just a burden' must be awful.

I can tell you that it does wonders. My mum always wants to feel useful even in her late stage Alzheimers. I even allow her to mix ingredients in a bowl then put them in a dish to cook in the oven( not turned on). Most of the things she tries to cook cannot be eaten but it doesn't matter.

Thanks for dispelling some common erroneous myths about dementia. I hope that there are some major breakthroughs in the fight against dementia. Many older friends have suffered from this malady and it is a real change to their caregivers. Perhaps in coming decades medical breakthroughs will make it easier for people to live longer and more productive lives even when they have some symptoms of dementia.
