    Did you use the speedbrakes to help get slowed down or was it all just pulling Gs? Heard Gonky mention that the SHB in a legacy Hornet was typically done without the boards (and heard the same from someone I know whose dad flew Hornets).

    • @WhiskyRomeo2
      @WhiskyRomeo2 Před měsícem

      Speed brakes to help bleed energy at that speed. Need all the help you can get to get it slowed down without going long in the groove. When coming into the overhead like that you have to get it right or you will get your ass chewed at the very least. First hand knowledge there! At high G loads (I think it was above 4g) the speed brake had to be manually held out or it would auto retract. Hornet would bleed almost 60kts per second at idle, boards out and on the G Limiter.

    • @BlackjackTheLad
      @BlackjackTheLad Před měsícem

      @@WhiskyRomeo2 Didn't know you had to keep the boards held out manually if you pull that many Gs, that's pretty interesting! Also saw you have a a good 20 degree offset from BRC as you're coming in for the extra turning room! Thanks for the quick reply and thanks for sharing 👍

  • @joemd7775
    @joemd7775 Před 2 měsíci

    Do you actually gain any increase in 'sustained' turn rate if the G limiter is disabled, and you are allowed to pull past 7.5G? I've had a USMC Hornet pilot tell me that the paddle really only helps with instantaneous turning as opposed to sustained turning (say if you are flying towards the ground and you have to quickly pull up). And that what you gain is very little and mainly at very low altitudes -sustained with the paddle. I was also figuring that the Hornet probably turns best around .7-.8 mach as opposed to .9 mach due to the straight wing design. Thank you for this cool video and service to our country.

    • @WhiskyRomeo2
      @WhiskyRomeo2 Před 2 měsíci

      Best instantaneous turn rate for FA18c is 307kts. Sustained turn rate around 350kts at sea level . The paddle switch disables the G limiter and the aircraft will pull whatever g is available for the weight/speed and altitude. The G limiter was also not able to keep up with a very light weight aircraft from over G ing. Air show aircraft were very lightly loaded and very “slick”, nothing attached to the aircraft externally. I over G ‘d during air shows once or twice due to this limitation.

  • @OrionRox
    @OrionRox Před 8 měsíci

    This is amazing! One question though, I've heard some F18 pilots mention that there should be no speed brake deployed during the shit hot, pilots should be able to manage the energy purely by pulling the aircraft. Is this true? Or do different squad has different rules on this.

    I've never piloted real plane but I do know every single button for the C Hornet. The NSW and ATC disengage are both the same paddle, does he disengage ATC on finals so that as soon as he touches down, he has NSW? Why not just wait until the plane has been trapped and then engage it? And if he had to bolter with ATC disengaged would he have to re engage it or would it do it automatically? Just a few questions for the real pilots out there who know the procedures.

    I see your still around . In a comment you said 200+ night traps - how many total traps did you get over what period of service . Curious about at what point would a fellow aviator say " that guy has got a lot of traps ." I suspect in war time those can add up quickly . Thanks for your service 👍 Cool you did LSO time . On a fighter podcast I watch surprisingly the LSO they had on was one of the coolest episodes . So many aspects from actually landing the aircraft to what you are trying to accomplish when grading and how to convey that to the various pilots of differing rank and experience . This guy had a very professional bearing like a friendly doctor . It was much more interesting then I expected .

    • @jkaposi
      @jkaposi Před 8 lety

      +tenirpaslager All squadron jets have pilot names on them, The jets with the lowest number get the CO and flows down through to the less senior guys. By the time all the jets get names put on there is still aviators who missed out....ie the most junior pilots. In a nutshell, the name on the jet has nothing to do with the guy actually flying it at the time.

    Mid flight refueling may be a pain at some points but it all depends on 2 things one if your a good pilot and or if you have what it takes to achieve a mid air refuel

  • @Broskeesful
    @Broskeesful Před 12 lety

    He makes sense. If you focus on the basket, you'd be moving the aircraft all over the place. But, If you focus on the aft side of the tanker, it helps you guide the probe in more efficiently. Re-watch the video and try focusing on both and see if you get what he was talking about (:

  • @WhiskyRomeo2
    @WhiskyRomeo2 Před 12 lety

    Correct, that's another Hornet and it's my interval in the pattern.. Target interval between landing aircraft is 45 seconds. In order to be 45sec behind my interval I need to pass by him as he is passing thru the 45, plus or minus a little. Too close to your interval, the deck isn't ready and you get waved off, BAD ju ju. Too far behind and you get lectured, BAD ju ju. If you nail 45s, you can go MACH and nobody cares. Nailing the proper interval is the hardest part of the shtt hot break.

I agree with your QOL sentiments, especially for the family life aspect. Many, many divorces and such. We just were never home enough. However, I wouldn't trade the memories for anything. We worked hard, but played even harder! Luckily, I still get to play with the stuff I did while serving, but as a Navy civilian now. SSHWFGD!
