      It's not a joke. My Mac Plus was dark brown/orange. Sat out in the sun for a week. Now it's beige. No chemicals whatsoever. A year later and it's still beige. Why did the sun turn it yellow at first, and why does the sun take the yellow out 30 years later? I won't even pretend to understand the science behind it or why it does that. But even to my own amazement, it worked.

    I learned how to type on one of these things in elementary school using type to learn. Though i find as I got older i started to not like apple products, I like the POSIX / UNIX under pinnings of the OS but I hate the proprietary walled garden that Apple puts its users in but I do quite enjoy linux because it gives a UNIX like experience without feeling as locked down.

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před dnem

      Yes, I had a very similar experience. I found doing "power user" stuff very difficult on Mac, and very cumbersome. As I need to do less of that sort of stuff on my daily driver in modern days, I find Mac is ok now because I generally only need functionality "permitted" within the walled garden. Although I always have other systems hanging around for times when I need to do "heavy lifting" and testing type tasks. But these days, for web browsing, graphic work, writing, taking notes, Mac works just fine. I've always thought Apple should put an "easy mode" switch inside their operating systems - that you could go from "locked down" easy mode to fully unlocked advanced mode with every option available.

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před dnem

      No, you can't connect USB A to C. You can use AirPlay over WiFi, but on a 2013 model AirPlay Receiver is disabled by default. On a 2013 you must enable AirPlay Receiver, which should be possible by installing OpenCore and upgrading to Mac OS Monterey or newer. If you want to use the iMac as your main display and do not need secondary display, you can use Sunshine/Moonlight method or Parsec (Parsec works like Sunshine/Moonlight in the video, but is easier to set up especially on Mac).

    I also have a 2006 MPC 1,1 that I upgraded the firmware to 2,1 and a Radeon HD 5770. I maxed out the memory at 32 gb., and added a 1 tb. Crucial SATA SSD, and with a little massaging with rEFIT, I was able to install Windows 10 Enterprise. It's actually pretty fast once it boots and everything settles down. The only thing that doesn't work so far is the sound chip, but that's easily remedied with a USB sound card that Windows recognizes automatically. I had to install Windows-based fan controls mainly to keep the memory at acceptable temp levels, since those 667 mhz. DIMMS seem to always run hot. Overall it's very stable now for everyday use, and has 3D graphics support with the Windows drivers for the Radeon HD 5770. Pretty impressive for an 18 year old machine!😉

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před 15 dny

      I think out of the ones shown, only Sunshine/Moonlight method would work for a 2015 iMac (possibly AirPlay method would work too, but only if the iMac was running OpenCore and modded). You might also consider trying Parsec. Parsec works like Sunshine/Moonlight, but is easier to set up with Mac to Mac. It is important to know that Parsec requires an internet connection to work (even if using LAN, it requires internet for sign-in), while Sunshine/Moonlight can work entirely local. Hope this helps!

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před 25 dny

      It depends which method you are using. Target Display does not work on 2015 and newer iMacs, and the AirPlay method doesn't work on stock 2015 Macs without OpenCore mods (Apple blocks the feature, but most hardware support it if unlocked with the mod). If you are using Sunshine/Moonlight (or alternatively Parsec which is easier to set up on Mac), that should work fine with a 2015 iMac and M3 MacBook.

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před 26 dny

      Yes, you can (and should) upgrade to an SSD which will give you substantial performance improvements. If possible, you should try upgrading to 8GB RAM (this will depend on your specific model). And you can do the OpenCore patch to install a newer version of Mac OS. I made a video here where I upgraded a 2008 Core 2 Duo iMac to Mac OS Monterey: czcams.com/video/_a2utQaO_Gs/video.html

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před 28 dny

      You really need to either work for, or have a relationship with a company that processes ewaste. Some places will sell you parts if you ask, but most will not. Most of the time you need to build a relationship with a place that does. And almost always you still need to pay for it, but generally it's extremely cheap in relation to buying online. They paid either nothing, or almost nothing for ewaste (and some places even got PAID to take it!) - so if they make a few bucks off you its an easy profit for them, and great value for you. But I say you need a relationship, because most places don't want random people off the street in their facility, so they need to know and trust you beforehand.

    is it possible to install a windows gpu and cpu on it when it has windows bootcamped on it

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před měsícem

      Any Intel CPU will work if it is supported by motherboard, even if it was originally from a Windows PC. The same Intel CPUs are used in Mac and PC computers, the Mac cannot tell if the CPU was originally in a Windows PC. It will work in Mac or in Boot Camp fine. On a Mac Pro you can install any GPU from a Windows PC and it should work in Boot Camp (but you will loose the startup Apple boot screen). On an iMac, it depends - because of how the internal screen is wired to the GPU. Some might work, others might need a custom vBIOS (like in the video). Although if you're running Boot Camp only, I'm not sure if you can skip the custom vBIOS... That is a good question!

      @@Sigmaskibid The 2012 and newer have soldered GPUs which can't be upgraded. Some also have soldered CPUs, which can't be upgraded. But on a 2014 CPU/GPU isn't your biggest issue. Your biggest issue will be the very slow mechanical hard drive. Upgrading to an SSD will make it way faster than any CPU/GPU/RAM upgrade will. If you don't want to open it up, you can have the hard drive hooked up to external USB. External is not ideal and you loose some performance, but should still be much faster than the built-in mechanical drive.

If that doesn't work, parts for these are hard to find, ebay it, but I paid around 43£ for mine at the time of writing, and I got the PSU, it was tested to post, and works quite well, though the FDD needs a new belt and the battery is dead.

      That's a very good point about parts being hard to find. The LCD is destroyed on so many levels, but the other components potentially could be salvageable. To be fair, I have actually seen something similar done in a manufacturing facility, where the machine had no dedicated display ports, but the signal was sent out via RJ45 instead. So the displays were actually having custom cables. I still wish there was a homebrew solution to decrypt the original target display signal and send it out via the same port (thunderbolt) but as a display signal. Should work fine.

      AirPlay/AirDrop is still available, but some newer versions (particularly if you're installing unsupported via OpenCore) of Mac OS require newer wireless cards in order for it to work. I'll be doing a future video about the AirDrop/AirPlay upgrade on a 2009.

      @@hey_siri._. Sorry, it looks like I was wrong - According to Apple you need at least a 2012 model for AirDrop officially (without upgrades/patches). It is possible on a 2011, but you need either a WiFi/Bluetooth upgrade, Mac OS upgrade/ patch, or both.

    Hey guys... I have a iMac 2017 which the display fell off (long story) and now, the technician says that the display can't work in its internal display port due to the fact that it's connector is broken or with an electrical damage. So I want to use my old late 2012 iMac as a Display for that 2017 one. Is there a way to achieve that with a cable (I did't using native remote access but is very slow and bad graphic quality) or there is a piece of hardware that allow me to convert my 2017 display to an external one and plug it to the external usb-c display ports? Or even more crazy, can I connect my fully functional 2017 retina display screen to my late 2012 iMac? Thanks for your help.

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před 2 měsíci

      You can use official Target Display over Thunderbolt cable, according to Apple's docs: support.apple.com/en-us/105126 It looks like your 2012 iMac must be running High Sierra or older, and your 2017 must be running Catalina or older. Although Apple says such things for the 2009 model, which absolutely works with new versions, so it might be worth testing regardless. Alternatively, you can use the Sunshine/Moonlight method in the video (also works with Parsec - which is easier to set up on Mac). There is also a product called Luna Display which is a little dongle you use on one Mac, then run an app on the other Mac to use as an external display. I've not used this product personally, but it looks to be reputable IMO. It costs money, but seems a little more polished that some other methods. The easiest free option though is probably setting up Parsec on both computers.

    is there any way to get a 2017 imac to be either a second display for another 2017 imac OR for a second display for a pc?

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, for a 2017 iMac as a screen for PC, you would use Sunshine/Moonlight method. If you are using 2017 iMac as a screen for another Mac, you can use AirPlay (less smooth video, but easy setup) or you can use Sunshine/Moonlight, or Parsec. Parsec works like Sunshine/Moonlight, but is easier to set up on Mac.

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před 2 měsíci

      That combo doesn't support direct connection. But you can do it by using Sunshine/Moonlight. Parsec would also work, and is easier to set up when connecting Mac to Mac. Basically you run Sunshine/Parsec server on the Mac Mini, and then you use the iMac with Moonlight/Parsec client as the viewer.

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před 2 měsíci

      For a 2011, it depends on what you're connecting it to. If you connect it to a Windows PC, then Sunshine/Moonlight would probably be ideal. If you're connecting it to an older Mac, you might be able to use Target Display. Connecting it to a newer Mac, you'll likely need Sunshine/Moonlight or Parsec (Parsec can be easier for Mac to Mac connection).

      Did you do the Monterey upgrade already and it became slow AFTER the upgrade? Or is it too slow and you want to upgrade it? If you have not done any upgrades yet, it would be best to do: 1. Upgrade original hard drive to an SSD (makes HUGE speed improvement!) 2. Have at least (or upgrade) to 8GB RAM 3. Use OpenCore to update to a modern Mac OS version The SSD upgrade will make it insanely faster even without upgrading anything else.

The installation is long but easy. 2hours. I restarted the imac and i had the same problem as AcDrift. It only recognizes 7 MB of VRAM I canceled the open core post installation pacht in the Open core interface, reboot, same problem. I reinstall the Open core post installation pacth, reboot, and… red screen. I reboot and the system stop the launch a few time , at the middle of the launch line under the apple. Black screen. How could I Know if the GPU bios is OK ? For the moment, I try to reinstall whith time machine. Thanks for you help

      I finally decided to restard the mac with safe mode.I saw in propertises that the AMD card was detected. Size of memory was OK (2gb) but not the name (AMD RADEON 7XXX) I think that the legacy patch is not OK. It decided to desinstalled the leagacy patch. Reeboot: No pb, no crash but the card is not detected correctly. So the pb is legacy patch and i saw in the documentation this: Following GPUs are applicable: GPU Architecture Model Families Supported AMD Polaris RX 4xx/5xx (10/20 series) Supported with patching AMD Vega Vega 56/64/VII (10/20 series) AMD Navi RX 5xxx/6xxx (10/20 series) Unsupported Is AMD M5100 compatible with open leagacy / Ventura ?

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, it should support Ventura. The M5100 is a GCN 1.0 card, which is officially supported on Ventura via the OCLP v0.5.0, so make sure your OCLP version is new enough. I've also experienced issues if the system was previously patched for legacy graphics (stock Radeon HD card) and then upgraded the card. The best way is to swap in a new hard drive (or fully wipe), install fresh, and apply the OCLP post-install patches with the M5100 installed. The patcher should see that the stock card isn't there and skip those patches, and install the GCN 1.0 patches instead. I believe restoring from Time Machine will restore the previous GPU patched system. If you can't do a fresh system install and need to retain the existing system, you can try restoring Time Machine and then doing an in-place reinstall of Mac OS to restore the OS to stock but retain personal data. Bottom line, if the system is patched in ANY way for the stock Radeon HD, it can cause problems for the GCN 1.0 cards. Fully wiped/fresh OS + OCLP 0.5.0 or later should resolve it. If you get video out using the iMac's internal LCD, I suspect your vBIOS is fine. I don't have experience specifically with Ventura, but I will try to help if you post back with questions. Good luck!

    • @rebootretro
      @rebootretro Před 2 měsíci

      @@agfo91 Yes, that is a risk for sure. If you have the original GPU, you could install it temporarily if you run into trouble. Or, a better option for testing, install a different blank hard drive. If the hard drive is fully blank, EFI "should" choose the USB stick as boot device even if the hard drive is normally default. Both options would work for me because I have lots of spare parts, but I don't know what spare parts you have on-hand.

      Thats excellent! TBH, the 12GB RAM is probably more than plenty for general use - I can't stress enough how overkill I went with 32GB, lol. If you want to run more modern OSes, I'd recommend the GPU upgrade (I show it here czcams.com/video/n9koG8p9Ch0/video.html) since it brings Metal support for modern apps to work properly. Also, if you want the full modern Mac experience, you can also upgrade the WiFi card to bring back AirDrop, AirPlay receiver, etc. I will be doing the WiFi upgrade in an upcoming video! :)
