      Plywood will normally be used in higher stress areas. For example: at the mast step, below the windlass, and below winches or sail tracks.

    I look a lot of videos about refitting sailboats and so on. Your video and your content about wood, also moisture in the wood is worth thinking about for everyone, who refit a sailing boat or something else.. THANKYOU For this VIDEO and wish you all the best.

    I am learning a lot and researching teak toe rail restoration. I visited Pacific Seacraft in Washington, NC and their teak restorer is amazing. The beauty of the teak that she restored was the most beautiful I have ever seen. The teak grain was exquistely viewed through the finish. Professional restorers are a wealth of knowledge. Congratulations are in order! It was a long and sometimes difficult journey(boat refit) and now you get to reap the rewards. May your troubles melt like lemon drops.

  • @SailingOTR
    @SailingOTR Před 3 lety

    Believe or not wood is generally at its strongest with a moisture content of about 12%. Zero moisture in wood makes it dry and brittle. High moisture content can lead to rot and softening the wood to pulp. You clearly saw the effects of moisture content when re-coreing the deck. Remember wood is made from trees and trees naturally absorb water as nourishment.

  • @SailingOTR
    @SailingOTR Před 3 lety

    Rather than using solid wood battens against the hull you could use light weight closed cell urethane foam of the correct thickness for your insulation. It can be attached to the hull with some Bondo. Mixed a bit "hot" it kicks off in a few minutes. Of course that foam will not hold a screw. Cover it with a couple of strips of CSM. For insulation above the waterline use urethane foam insulation. It comes in sheets 3/4" thick from Home Depot and is covered with aluminum foil on one side and aluminized paper on the other side. This provides both a vapor barrier and additional thermal insulation. A bonus comes from having a large portion of the hull and underside of the deck and cabin top covered with the aluminum foil. This makes almost the whole boat into a radar reflector as if it were made from metal.

  • @SailingOTR
    @SailingOTR Před 3 lety

    You had the perfect opportunity to bond the hull and deck together. It is a bit of extra f/g and fairing work. Then build bulwark rails (4" high) mounted about one inch above the deck to brackets welded to the stanchion bases ala Hal Roth on Whisper. This eliminates a lot of holes altogether and gives a nice high bulwark rail against which to brace your feet. With the added bonus of no standing water on deck, even if you are in heavier sailing conditions. And the rail can be used as an infinitely adjustable genoa track by using a rope strop and a block.

  • @southerntexashomestead5028

    Watch "Free Range Sailing" they address water egress in their refit videos. Any place a screw should penetrate the wood they predrill the hole fill with epoxy and in some structual areas use stainless steel inserts that are threaded to recieve stainless steel screws for a Bulletproof solution. They are a great resource of information.

    Hi - I have a few questions to ask about what you learned about the hull when you guys completely stripped the innards - particularly the thickness of the fiberglass+core+fiberglass sandwich, the number of fiberglass layers used on either side of the core, the lack of ribs or framing. What is the best way to contact you. Thank you.

    I'd bed the rails with bedding compound like 3M 5200 aswell as the plugs. But only after throughly checking the hull-deck joint.

    Hi guys. I am a boat builder in Australia and have worked my entire life with timber and fibre glass and what you're doing with your boat is extremely dangerous for you and your wife and anyone who plans to join you on your vessel. You can't simply buy a 1x4 piece of wood, stick it below deck and call it a floor. The biggest mistake you made was removing everything from below deck. Chances are, you have lost the shape of your boat already. I urge you to check out Sail Life to give you an idea of how to build a boat safely. czcams.com/video/g1lFgwIZqyc/video.html Best wishes.

    Seeing a bare boat hull in good condition and ready to be built upon is so satisfying to me. All that open space and head room to make a simple and efficient living space, working smarter and not harder. Serious ambition for me to buy a sailboat of my own and create a mobile home while I'm young and earning money that should be invested in something worthwhile.
