    When doing these tests you can not compare varnishes if you don’t follow the directions on the label. The ones you heat treated that did not call for heat treatment probably broke down. Depending on the chemicals used in the product, it could have been dangerous for you as well! You should redo this “experiment” following the directions of the product to the letter.

    I use karmar spray sealer first (3 coats) let dry between each coat. Then VHT same amount of coats. Bake at 250 for 20 - 30 minutes my tiles did not yellow at that temperature.

    Thanks for sharing this video! I made some coasters with decoupage technique. I sealed the surface with Mod Podge for 4-5 times. After one week, I used Dupli-Color Varnish and let the tiles to cure for a week. Then when I put a very hot mug on the tile, it didn't stick but there was a deep circle. Could you please tell me what the problem was?

  • @agould105
    @agould105 Pƙed 2 lety

    I’ve had good success with the Dupli Color one you tried. I sprayed 3-4 coats with 30 minutes in between then set the tile out in 85-90 degree sun to cure for 4 hours. Next morning I did the hot coffee test with no sticking! It was a darker tile so I saw no “yellowing,” there were some white parts on my design that do not appear yellow.

I tested with a 12 oz mug of water heated to 180 degrees. Let the mug sit on the tile for 10 minutes. It stuck and left a ring. Not sure what I did wrong. Would you please give me some advise? That's not how to varnish, it's not done the way Abstract Anneliese did the brush strokes, go straight across the canvas, not multiple directions and definitely NOT when it starts to get tacky. Then when first coat is dry turn the canvas so the next coat goes in another direction. Over brushing like she did will make is go cloudy, cause lumpy bits because it was clearly too tacky to be brushing it.

    I recommend using a Tack Cloth on your products before applying any clear coat or you'll keep getting those bubbles and spots when you spray. The bubbles and spotd are residue on the surface that won't let the clear coat adhere to. You can find Tack cloths at home depot and Lows, its a semi sticky yellow cotton cloth that cleans and picks up any residue on your product so its ready for clear or paint. Nice comparisons !

    I understood that 2 coats are enough, unless you want to go for the glass effect... I also got into trouble with varnish, big time, not a groove, but I left a bit too much in 2 places, and it is not levelled. How can I fix that, pleaseeee

    You mentioned seeing brush strokes on VHT. Do you spray then use a brush to spread it around?

      No only spray. But if I run my fingernail over it, it scratches the surface

      @@abstractanneliese6950 thanks for answering. I have used the Diamond finish too but I get bubbles on it.

      I’ve noticed the bubbles more if the coasters are colder than room temperature and if I try to rush and spray on too thick

      @@abstractanneliese6950 yea I’m thinking I need to wait till it gets warmer outside before sealing my coasters.

    How long did you let the coasters dry/cure before spray varnishing
