When Jesus became god - a book about a truly strange time period
An old video I found laying about on my harddrive. A truly enjoyable book that I highly recommend for a glimpse into a strange, yet uncannily familiar, time period.

Why Rhaenyra should NOT be queen

In this video I speak a bit about whether or not the writers intend for us to root for Rhaenyra or not. I know this may seem a moot point to debate, but I don't think it is. It makes a big difference for how we analyze the text whether the writers are aware of Rhaenyra's flaws or not. To a large extend, I think they are - but I also think the writers are too heavily bunkered down in her corner....

Yes, yes, I'm THAT person complaining about the romance plot in a book about high-stakes rebellions and wide-spread oppression, but COME ON, that was just ridiculous, particularly in a book the author has specifically stated was, at its heart, about Darrow's relationships with others. Good books, though. When I'm done fuming, the whole series gets a 5/5. (It's been two months, though, and still...

    Rhaenys burning the greens changes nothing. They still had Jaehaerys and Daeron to put on the throne. And Rhaenys brutally murdering the children and wife of her cousin and king would turn ALL the houses of Westeros green. No one would support Rhaenyra. Rhaenys is actually the only person on the show who has sense on team black. In the book however she doesn't advise caution and she pushes for war time and time again. Rhaenyra in the show is white washed a lot and so is Alicent. Rhaenyra is actually very entitled to the point of delusion in the book. She believes she just deserves to be queen. Alicent is criminally ambitious in the book. Both these traits have been very watered down and a lot of accountability has been taken away from both women. Rhaenyra has the magical prophecy in the show that pushes all her actions and she doesn't really want it by the prophecy says she's the chosen one so she has to take the throne. Alicent was just a poor victim of powerful men. All she ever did was try to uphold the family and do her duty to the realm. Rhaenyra will kill her children if Aegon isn't king and besides Viscerys changed his mind at the end. Alicent is only doing what her husband wished. It's so dumb. I would prefer to see these women as written in the book. It would be way more entertaining and make more sense.

    Rhaenyra spent her forming years as a brash, abrasive girl that scoffs at responsibility and being self-centered (Refusing to even consider political marrige, ignoring the implecations for Cole cuz she's horny), spent her adault years making basterds without even considering the consequences, runs away from court and responsibility AGAIN, and spends most of the present doing nothing, being indecisive and entitled. She is a failure in every aspect of nobility and rulership, and the fact that the show tries to paint her as a heroine rather than the villain she is annoys me to no end.

Her son's are bastards and she said Aemond needs to be questioned sharply. Sharply meaning tortured. But then wants to act high mighty like she would never tolerate a child being hurt when blood and cheese happened. Girl bye.

  • @laurarodriguezalvarez1243

    I don't understand why people support her, Rhaenyra at the moment she became an adult only commented and did stupid things, from then on, she was never a good person, she did what she wanted, spoiled, pretentious, silly, bad person...etc, she has everything; and in the books it is shown that this woman is a BAD ruler, bad heiress, bad person. It is normal that she defends Alicent, she was always right and it is normal that she is stressed, look what she has to deal with xd. People just like her because she is the main character and they tried to make her in the series as the ''good one'', ''there's Rhawnyra, she suffers a lot''. I feel it deserved that they usurp her throne, this woman never took care of her inheritance, she deserves many bad things; obviously if they happen to her; the fandom: Oh no, little probe.... enough xd

    they couldn't stand to make a show and i quote "with nothing but white people" so they made the albino purple eyed people africans. Like. Talk about cringe modern thinking spoiling a perfectly good show. The entire plot of the latter part of the season 1 is about if Rhynera has been loyal to her husband and her husband is a black dude and they have nothing but white kids. Like are these showrunners for real.

  • @sadieofficialreal
    @sadieofficialreal Před 26 dny

    Rhaenyra wants to challenge the norms of Westerosi society, much like Daemon. But also like Daemon Rhaenyra ignores that her challenging the norms of society, while justified as most of these norms are sexist and antiquated, causes untold harm to the smallfolk and those around her and yet she does it anyway. She wants all the trappings of royalty (A dragon, attended by servants all day, constant feasting) but refuses to accept the duty that comes with it. There are rules royals must follow, not because these rules are just but because if they are broken scheming lords will use it against the royal family to wage war and grasp for power. Alicent did her duty and what was expected of her while Rhaenyra did as she pleased at the cost of innocents. Are we just going to forget the random man burned alive so Rhaenyra could marry her pedophile uncle? The untold thousands violently SAed by the Ironborn in Lannisport, sanctioned by Rhaenyra? Or the fact that she has now licensed her dragon riders to burn innocents so she may take her throne, a throne she would likely have ascended without challenge if she had simply done what was expected of her, not because those expectations are just but because they are necessary to keep the realm at peace. This is the burden of royalty, if she can't accept it she certainly shouldn't be queen. I also think it's so stupid to frame her as "feminist". There is nothing feminist about burning thousands of women so that a woman can one day feast in the Red Keep while thousands of common born women starve.

    Should she be queen? Debatable for sure, especially when she never had the opportunity to stand up and show what she's worth in that regard. But Westeros had already had its fill of bad kings even then (very bad even, in the cases of Aenys and Maegor before her, which still never prevented them from ruling or being acknowledged as such). The more important question here is whether Aegon would make a better king, giving him some sort of moral claim to usurp her. The answer is no, Aegon would be even worse, there's not even a question about that. If she's unworthy, depraved or irresponsible, Aegon is three times each at least. Ergo if both are inherently incompetent, she still has the higher and more legitimate claim to the throne.

And if aegon accepted rhaenyra to the throne she would rule shit too(at least in the books, she has other priorities), the small council would govern the kingdom, but again because of the bastardy of her children the war could come again, i dont think she would not try to silence alicent children because they slandered the strong bois for years and would not stop

    Well, Season 2 is out. I wonder what you think of Rhaenyra right now. Because everything you say here is valid and Rhaenyra's ineffective leadership, in my opinion, really shows in Season 2 right now, no matter how the show runners are clearly biased for Team Black. The passivity she learned from Viserys is prevalent because we're 5 eps in and she fails to take decisive action and constantly prevaricates about going to war, when the Greens are already ACTING in the Crownlands and taking down her supporters, and they have far less dragons than she does! Like girl, wtf! Her Small Council members are clearly annoyed and irritated by her, and they talk down to her and rightfully so, because she does not ACT. She disappears for DAYS, if not WEEKS, to talk to her ex-gf in KL after infiltrating Scooby Doo style, that would seriously hurt her standing as a ruler in front of her councillors. And the reasoning she gave them about talking to Alicent was soooo weak, my god. Like yeah girl, we know this war is unavoidable, we're conducting it right at this moment without your ass here. And let's not get started about Rhaenys' death, because before Rhaenys was sent out, Rhaenyra and her Small Council are like, it might be a trap. Rhaenys volunteers, and knowing the possibility of a trap, Rhaenyra does not send another dragon rider with her? The Greens have VHAGAR and many times throughout the story they keep emphasising how Aemond is the real threat because of his dragon, and she still sends Rhaenys ALONE. I can't with Rhaenyra, seriously.

    my own understanding of how the show is trying to explain why the people in the book acted the way they did are all largely unknown to the maesters and septons who wrote the history books, like the "song of ice and fire" that the show says has been passed on from aegon the conqueror's ancestors down to rhaenyra, and the reason why everybody thinks rhaenyra is just this entitled heir is because they supposedly don't know that she is actually carrying this sacred prophecy that she feels obliged to safeguard. at least that's how i understand how the show is trying to tell the story. in a way, it's not even about rhaenyra, but the story is going to be told through her. rhaenyra herself is the framing device so that the show can tell the story of how the prophecy went from "we will conquer westeros because there is a great need to fulfil this prophecy" to "you know nothing, jon snow".
