The Sunbeam Alpine Channel is dedicated to the maintenance, restoration and preservation of the 'Series' Sunbeam Alpines built between 1959 and 1968. The channel features videos of how we have fixed problems with various Sunbeam Alpines that we own or have owned. Almost all of these tasks are carried out using only the most basic D.I.Y. tools. If the videos help you to fix your car then they have been worthwhile. We can send you various instructional guides to help do work on Alpines. If you need something please feel free to contact us at TIM_RAYMOND@sky.com The videos are free for you to use, all we ask is that you subscribe to the channel (it won't cost you anything) .
Remember you can watch this channel on most modern televisions. not just on computer.
On this channel we also feature other Alpine related channels that we have found useful.
We have also owned a few Norton motorcycles over the years and there are some videos of the rotaries on this site just for interest.

Sunbeam Alpine: Respraying your Alpine at home
This video shows how long time Alpine owner Eddie Zetlein resprays cars in his home garage saving himself £1,000s. His Alpine was a rusty shell when it arrived, now it has been modified to accept a V8 engine and he has resprayed it from bare metal to a stunning glass like finish. The end result is amazing and achieved for a fraction of the price of a professional re-spray. If you have ever thought about doing this, watch what Eddie does and why not give it a go...

Running a taxi in London for 35 years gave me plenty of practice in spray painting. I used to do my own repairs at home and the Westminster Insurance assessor and myself ended up on first name terms. I'd rather do a repair and get paid for it, than go out to work........................................Luckily most prangs were someone else's fault.
It taught you well Eddie! Great job.
V helpful video. I replaced my wheelboxes and rack because the passenger side wiper was slipping. It all went smoothly, but to my horror, the passenger side wiper is still slipping. I simply can't understand it, because all 'toothed' parts are now new. Could it be the motor? It just seems illogical. Any insights gratefully received.
Could it be that the splines in the wiper arm itself are worn away and it is turning because it is not engaging with the splines on the new wheel box?
As an Alpine owner who is looking into starting to spray paint in my workshop I found this video very helpful. Watching professionals with all the gear in paint shops is all well and good but you always have that doubt as to if it can be done in an ordinary garage……. This video puts those thoughts to rest. Hats off to you Eddy I will be starting to spray knowing it CAN BE DONE. (I hope you will be at the National 2024 I’d like to meet you. Shuxpower.
As Eddie says repeatedly, it is all in the preparation. It has certainly given me more confidence seeing what Eddie has achieved in his ordinary garage.
Nice one Eddie you do a great job of showing everyone how good and rewarding doing a paint job is cheers and thanks
Thanks for your comment, Eddie really does do a good job.
Nice job Eddie👍Good to see your on the home stretch 🤘
It will be a beauty once it’s finished.
, educational, Eddie is a top bloke .
And a top painter!

It certainly made me think about whether I could do it. I’ve got a compressor but was always scared to try a respray before. Eddie gets such good results that it is tempting to try and do it like he does.
Well done that man proper old school I'm a base and clear man and a gravity feed gun. But it's nice to do every stage of a restoration. Hats off. Top job. Ps love the Banjo on wall.
Eddie is very good at what he does.

Fascinating video and explanation of how the Twin 40s work, Trevor's knowledge on these is amazing, well done and thank you.
Glad that you enjoyed the video. Best wishes.
God I miss my series 2. She was my first car in 1982. Unfortunately it was a police magnet being red. I moved to a series 5 in British racing green. I never got a ticket in that one.
There are plenty around, all the colours, all the Series. Why not get another? I bought my car in 1983 and it was the best buy I ever made. It first went round the clock in 1987!
Nice work but just noticed at 13 mins the piston ring compressor is out of alignment slightly which can cause the tool to enter the bore whilst tapping the piston down into the bore.
We’ve never had that happen Edd but we will watch out for it in future. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Cool. What is the aftermarket parts market like. If I wanted beadwork ....for an cam (if there is even cam options). What about headers. Has anyone thrown a small turbo on the thing (if there is even room. I think keeping it oem is better but can we get this thing to 175 hp? Thx
Steve there are various cam options as well as other performance modifications, all parts are available. Some owners fit Holbay engines with twin 40 Webers. Some owners fit V6 or even V8 engines. I am not aware of anyone fitting turbos. Back in the 1960s Alpines were very successfully raced with the standard engine, it can be tuned in multiple ways. An Alpine is a very well balanced, high quality car and will perform very well with a lot less than 175.
Hello, very good video. I have a question. At minute1.38-1.42, there is a rubber form fitted against the curved aluminum frame, what is it and where do I get one. It is shown in the parts diagram (327/1) but cannot locate one. I have a SIV. Thanks
If you mean the rubber seal that goes around the edge of the body behind the aluminium trim piece I think it is called the body tub seal. Try Sunbeam Spares Co. Should be easily available.
@@TheSunbeamAlpineChannel It is actual a piece that is in front of the aluminum trim. It might be a custom piece but allows the top to close with no gap. It is shown on your video @ minute 1.40.
Hi, 327/1 is the hood roll cover. The Parts manual says it is only on a Series V. I can’t see that part in the video! Perhaps you are misidentifying something here.
@@TheSunbeamAlpineChannel Okay on 327/1. In watching it again, frame by frame, it maybe the soft top its self and the way it is folded. Though, I dont think so. Anyway, thanks very much, very good video.

Yes Rootes made some beauties.
Would love to have one of those since I was12.
You and most of the people watching the video! A lovely car, so stylish and classy.
Thank you for the comments while we were live! ❤
That was a great trip, I know the area very well. Your Alpine sounded very sweet . Great drive. All the best Bob
Bob, we did The Isle of Wight the year before and are planning on going to Shropshire later this year. It is what these beautiful cars were made for.
I had a Series 3 GT back in the 1980s, I should have kept it. The Harrington version may be better built, but I think they have spoiled the lines of the Alpine, which was a beautiful car.
Terry they are still great cars today, you should think about finding another Series III !
I have a 1725 with one damaged piston and having trouble finding a single standard piston and rings here in the USA.
Try F.W,Thornton in the U.K. I think they might be able to supply individual pistons. Best Wishes.

Hello , i can't find it with the website adress you gave..
Hi, I’ve just been searching for it and it seems that the link has gone. I’ve looked for the same cap elsewhere and can’t find it. The best that I can suggest is to contact some motor parts suppliers near you and see if they have a lockable flip-up fuel cap on the shelf. Once you’ve found the cap you can see from the video it is quite simple to convert it and make it fit an Alpine.
great video, unfortunately tim raymond email comes with Mail delivery faile, do someone have the exact adress?
Hi, Michel, if you want to email me don’t forget the underscore between tim and raymond. It should be tim_raymond@sky.com best wishes. Tim
I'm just starting on my Alpine journey - hoping to own one later in the year. Off to Moffat June 30th to see some more beauties I hope. It's great to see something so perfectly factory as it shows what is correct - I imagine there's a lot of modded cars that are not. Great channel.
The Alpine truly is a remarkable car, you won’t regret it. Whether you want a classic to use regularly alongside modern traffic or to have something special to enjoy on sunny days the Alpine fits the bill. The high quality of the initial build helps now 60+ years later. Good luck with your search.
I had just closed the timing cover on a 1725 motor that I'm rebuilding having festidiously assembled it to syncronise the camshaft , crankshaft and oil pump. I thought it was correct but inuitively I made reference to this video. It was wrong. The all valuable sequence runs from 19:37 to 21:35 . It is true that the wording in all the workshop manuals that I have do not make it clear. When the cam & crank sprocket markings are in line at TDC 1& 4, the engine is actually at the No 4 TDC firing stroke: not No 1. Your video demonstrates clearly that the crank needs to be rotated another 360 degrees clockwise so that the cam marking moves 180 degrees from the original setting, The distributor drive on the oil pump is then positioned with the smaller segment at an angle of 47-49 degrees to the line of the motor. Why didn't the workshop manual simply have the timing marks at No 1 TDC . If the slot in the oil pump drive is not properly positioned it immediately creates difficulties with the distributor position because the slot os offset. Thanks for posting. A big help.
I am really glad that the video has helped you. If people only follow the Workshop Manual there are a number of things that were omitted or superseded by different advice/specification later on in production. As far as we are aware everything that we publish on The Sunbeam Alpine Channel is the final advice that Rootes settled on. Our aim is always to keep these lovely old cars running in the best condition possible. Best Wishes, Tim
@@TheSunbeamAlpineChannel A big thankyou : though my car is not a Sunbeam Alpine ,the 1725cc motor in my Australian Assembled Hillman Gazelle is the same. The reference from your 'CZcams' channel has helped me very much............... much appreciated ........ thanks again.
My father had a 1960 Sunbeam Alpine twin carb with electric overdrive he bought in England and brought back to the U.S. The car had the jumpseats in the back and my sister and I sat back there as small children. He drove it in S.C.C.A rallies from time to time.
It is lovely how classic cars can evoke such memories. I hope you enjoyed the video.
@TheSunbeamAlpineChannel Yes, very much. My father loved cars and British cars especially, owning a Jaguar Mkii 3.8 and an XJ6. When my parents went to England to buy a car in 1960, Mom wanted the Jaguar but Dad wanted the Sunbeam. They attended a large auto show in London to seek out a car. I still have the map given to my parents showing the Rootes service locations in London which was given to them when they obtained the car.

Relays, large wiring harness has room for relays with a power and a control side.
Relays are the cheapest way to brighter lights and louder horns etc. we love relays.
What about the 1494?
The engines are very similar.
Good info. How much would an average condition Alpine mk5 cost in the UK now? I'm interesting in buying one.
How long is a piece of string? You see running cars advertised from about £8,500 and immaculate cars at over £20,000. It depends what you want. Somewhere around £12,000-£15,000 will get you a nice useable car. It is a good idea to join the owners club and learn about the different models before buying. Check out the Essential Buyer’s Guide Video.
@@TheSunbeamAlpineChannel thank you. I'm currently interested in one that been laid up for a while. The seller says it needs the carb adjusting and brakes are locked on. Do you know if any reliable mechanics familiar with Alpines in the west Essex/ Herts area?
@@paulbrowne6087 The best advice I can give you is to check the car over thoroughly with someone who knows Alpines and knows the spots to check. Companies like the AA and RAC will also do vehicle inspections for a fee.
@@TheSunbeamAlpineChannel is that a service the club offers to is members?
@@paulbrowne6087 I don’t think there is a formal ‘service’ but if you join there are local branches all over the country with very knowledgeable owners there. Most have monthly get together and events. Depending on where you are and where your car is you will probably be able to find someone local to it who will check it over with you. A Series V Alpine is a very nice, useable classic, you won’t be disappointed with your choice.
My dad’s alpine needs a new one actually… parts/kits are cheap just need to find time.

Thank you. I hope that it helps people.
very informative and interesting and educational video thanks.
Good, that is what we were trying to make. Thank you.
Thank You for a very educational video. I have 3 Weber DCOE 40 carbs on a Datsun 240Z The car came with a mechanical and a electric fuel pump.. My problem is cold starts after weeks or long storage times To start, i run the electric pump for 10/15 seconds then turn the engine over and pump the gas. Get a lot of bucking.until the engine smooths out. I some times I can smell a small amount the fuel when before starting. I think the fuel is evaporating from the carb bowls. Thank you for any help you can provide
Hi there. DCOEs are open to the atmosphere via the float chamber vents and so do evaporate readily. As you have noticed when you switch on, the electric pump can be heard to click away which is normal as the float chambers are refilled. But a couple of things to check. The underside of the body has a square plate with four screws and the Gasket of that plate could leak. Under the plate is the float chamber debris and water collection chamber so it could be worth removing the plates and checking the condition of the gaskets and replacing. They are cheap enough and all the DCOE parts suppliers will have them. A few are Fast Road Cars Southern Carburettors Webcon Now you say you have both mechanical and electrical pumps. Presumably the electric primes the mechanical? You might check the fuel pressure at the carbs when running as the inlet pressure ideally needs to be less than 3.5 psig or the carbs can overfill particularly on bumpy roads. So the smell of petrol on starting is very common. You pump the throttle four or five times to the floor which squirts fuel via the accelerator pump directly in to the inlet which effectively is the replacement for "pull the choke out" and the engine fires and runs lumpy as hell until a few minutes when all smooths out. It helps to rattle your foot on the throttle during the initial lumpy phase as this squirts little bits of extra fuel in as it warms up. Most users of DCOEs disconnect the "starting device" which is all but useless and use the squirt the throttle to start procedure. The side effect of that is the accompanying smell of petrol which is normal.
An answer from the expert! Thank you Trevor.
How about trumpets that adjust as you rev
Isn’t that called fuel injection and an ECU?
@@TheSunbeamAlpineChannel no fuel injection l know about takes advantage of variable trumpets to affect the ramming effect of resonance at different rpm's. I'm thinking side draft webers with trumpets that move... Hell, have headers that move like a trombone due to rpm too.
@@michaelannen4168 I’ve not heard of trumpets that move, I thought you were joking! Best wishes.

Thanks for taking us along with you, still a great looking car after your restoration, and as you show, you aren't afraid to use it 👍
Keith, it's what they were made for. Such lovely, high quality cars they really are very under rated.
Great job. Of course someone had a body in primer. Of course someone had parts. Of course someone had perfectly restored cars. Lets put them on display re-creating the factory and showroom ... brilliant!
Yes this was a well deserved prize winning display and a credit to those that created it.
My thanks to you for this video which gave me the insight needed to do this job myself. Completed last Saturday and currently no leaks! Just thought I would add some observations for anyone that follows, though, particularly when undertaking the task with the engine in situ. I would suggest borrowing some time on a car lift if at all possible as it is very fiddly and a helping hand is needed along the way so access needs to be as great as is possible. After draining the oil and removing the sump I would suggest leaving the car alone for as long as possible, preferably overnight, to allow the oil to stop dripping. I did it all in one morning which was not ideal as very messy. The two side gaskets will need more than vaseline to hold in place whist you work trimming the lengths of sliqourice - I used a good gasket sealant and the same goes for the cut lengths as you manoeuvre the sump into position. I also used some small modeling clamps to temporarily hold the side gaskets in place just to be sure. As I mentioned a helper is preferred when it is all upside down and not wanting to cooperate. It all looks so easy on the bench in ideal conditions!
All good points.
A good job and a serviceable tool....I started as an apprentice mechanic for International Harvester in 1971, and we did stuff like this. We used bending, at a cherry red heat from an oxy-acetylene torch. Then, as now, working with the resources at hand was the key.
Necessity is the mother of invention!
We have a 64 Harrington alpine were starting a restoration weve built numerous tigers and alpines early cars and nere the end of production
You are very lucky! The Harringtons are rare and truly beautiful cars. It will be good to have another one back on the road.
Older Sykes pickavant and Churchill tools do tend to be expensive, because most automotive type people know they are top quality British made tools. I used them from the early 70s onwards, as an apprentice and skilled auto technician, but as you say, they are not plentiful. You have made a tool that is well capable of doing the job.👍
What we try and do on The Sunbeam Alpine Channel is help people who own Alpines today. The reality is that if you buy an Alpine, perhaps it is your very first classic, you will probably have minimal tools and often minimal knowledge. We try and spread our experience and help with things like this because a new owner would be very unlikely to have any of the ‘special’ tools. Thank you for watching the video, I hope that you enjoyed it.
