Why I Will Never Renounce My British Citizenship
My Newsletter: benjaminantoine.substack.com
The UK and all that it stands for is an amazing place. There are so many reasons to love the UK and yet it is a country full of contradictions. There are cultural traits shared by the English, Welsh Scottish and Irish that I can't stand and a few things which are more specifically English. This is an exploration of my feelings about Britain after visiting again in the spring.

I love the UK But i am in the top 10% of professionals, have a stable job and am well looked after. I get paid well an come from a stable home with a high earning parent. I am able to see the positive sides and opportunities offered of living in an enormously diverse, interesting and yes unequal country. Il always live here, ive got a great set up. Id get paid more in germany or europe for sure, but why would i throw everything away to start again? I feel like alot of moaning about britains economy and immigrants says more to say about the persons individual circumstances than the state of the land. Ppl moan and moan about the national issues that we have but really its just about themselves and their personal struggles. This was is and always will be a fantastic country to live in and we are truly, truly blessed to be British. I do feel sorry for people who choose to leave. Its sad that they had to do that due to the depressing environment they grew up in and feeling like theyre never gna get out

I always hear German saying we are serious people and so cold we don’t laugh and hard to get along with us so closed culture don’t like others and don’t open very easy to others, I think it’s time to move on with this BS stereotype German strict everything, I have German friends they are the most fun people and funniest ever so happy and very easy to be around and I won’t trade them for the world. I think when you are boring and close minded person you can be any nationality and not German specifically, and if you are German boring and very strict person what you believe are then you represent yourself only as German and you don’t represent the all population of Germany. So my point is and my believes are that every country has boring and exciting people so look for the people who’s like you and stop generalizing and making the all country looks bad because some of the population are close minded or behave different than you. I will visit Germany soon this year can’t wait to make new German friends 😊

Stereotyping of Parisians, stick to Germany. I lived in Paris for 2 years and frequent visitor to France. I have to admit to being a Francophile and note that Germany has only been a country since 1871 and regional variations are huge. I really like Hamburg and Berlin, as the most cosmopolitan German cities, but dislike my experience of the culture in Munich

After living abroad for 8 years and coming back to my home country I figured out, that home is always only a specific point in time connected to certain people. I longed to live in my hometown again, which I can't cause work is somewhere else. But my hometown has changed in the 20 years I'm gone. It changed and is has become foreign to me. But I still got people I'm close to there so they make feel "coming home"every time I visit. Maybe home truly is where the heart is.

  • @susandrydenhenderson6234

The U.K. is not incredibly diverse - and doesn’t want to have those troubles. There’s been more immigration to Britain in the last 25 years than in the last 25,000 years. We have always been genetically quite homogeneous, until very recently, unlike more modern nations. Few ordinary people would want to rejoin the EU. We are very lucky to have left. Everybody else wants to leave it now.

  • @susandrydenhenderson6234

No. People have only tuned in to hear some insight into the differences, which you don’t have.

  • @susandrydenhenderson6234

This fella sounds like somebody who’s only ever mixed with people who get their news from the Guardian and the BBC and only mixed with cosmopolitan middle class under 45s. Try getting outside of Islington and Hampstead. Go to some random British cities, towns and villages (not the commuter belt and tourist and second home spots full of people like yourself). Go to some random places not featured in the Observer and on “hidden” and “secret” spot lists made up by your mates.

What Brexiteers fail to realise is that under Free Movement a very large proportion of EU immigrants, stayed in the UK 'temporarily' for employment. That migration option was also two way. Since Brexit, European migration has been replaced, many fold, by non-European migration which is permanent. In a nutshell, European migrants return home to retire. Non-European migrants do not. I left the UK 21 years ago. Since Brexit, I decided never to return, even to visit. As a European it is not my Country any longer. No doubt Brexiteer bigots will say good riddance, but could not care less.

That culture of hiding one's personality and using sarcasm and put-downs of others + bullying starts early on in the Brit school system. Most Brits stick with this learned behaviour through much of their adult lives. This negative behaviour masks varying degrees of self loathing. How does a society rooted in this mindset stand a chance?😮

This is the unavoidable full circle of being an empire. Imperial Britain was isolated while it spread across the world. It shrunk back to its shores with a vacuum effect bringing people from its former dominions. Not many English can connect with its imperial past. England was a cultural bubble while it ruled from abroad. Unlike the Romans it had a policy of "Us and Them". When London established itself as a global financial cornerstone it's just natural that people from it's former colonies and other nations would be attracted.

BUT I have decided to move out to my country of birth because of financial difficulties. Now the cost of living has gone sky high. I can’t afford the rent, the council tax,the cost of utilities, WIFI , access to fruits and vegetables etc. My pension needs an £4000 a month, for me to just survive. In my own country, I’ll need only about £ 500 a month to lead a modest middle class life Fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and uncontaminated almost every food item. God, Greed, Guns. It is a uniquely violent society as well as a social-Darwinist nation state where corporations have abnormal breadth of power relative to private individuals, and collective action for the public good ( unions, public funding of infrastructure, health and education) is widely looked down on. Their culture is overwhelmingly self-referential, which makes it very hard for them to genuinely understand whether people from other nations are coming from. That is reflected in the chronic clumsiness of American foreign policy. They desperately want to believe that fundamentally, their way of doing things is the Right And Only Way, and that given a genuinely free choice, surely everyone else in the world would agree with them, and the whole world would become a Greater America.

thank you for that , that was indeed nuanced and balanced - i myself am returning to live in UK next year after 28 years in Hong Kong and in the intervening years Ive made numerous trips back to UK and incrementally felt more and more alien ...I have so many things I could add to your monologue that I don't know where to begin......i particularly find the terrestrial news media unbareably self-critical of itself as a nation and its history on the world stage . Another topic, but related is English people's individual self-censoring and deprication...In mid-20th century China it was always safest when talking 'where ears were hiding' to say something revolutionary in order to off-set any mis-interpretation or other random gossip of you being a loathesome counter-revolutionary. In UK men do this instinctively when talking about women, and indiginous caucasian people do it when discussing other races and any talk of sexualies etc etc.. and these subjects DO NOT go away they are ever present in virtually every aspect of life ...just as revolution was seen in every topic under Chairman Mao. On the + side I love , no, ADORE the fast flowing natural fluent English language that surrounds me in UK and i notice i have a perma-smile when in conversation...where I no longer need to simplify my English, as I mostly do in Hong Kong. Looking forward to the challenge...Thank you

Dear Brit in Germany, I think I saw that you actually live in Frankfurt, my old home town which I left in 1973 to move south to the Black Forest to then to leave Germany in 1988 altogether, it probably changed a lot, it definitely got bigger. Poor thing, the "Hesse" (from the federal country of Hessen where Frankfurt is located) is known for being the most direct in entire Germany, even other Germans complain at times. My english husband actually takes it quite well when I quickly end his self-delusion trip by bringing him straight back down to earth (auf den Boden der Tatsachen), he calls me hard but fair. I now live in lovely Suffolk and try to cope with the english way of "muddling through", not easy...

London has become a shite hole under Khans mayoral rule, he is hell bent on destroying London as we once knew it. I live in Hertfordshire and nowadays I try not to go anywhere near it. The great replacement moves on apace.

i thought the opposite. I feel like the British spirit is lost. I am 32 and i find that anyone younger than we couldn't give a toss about being British. I'm not proud of my culture. even more so now that we have left the EU. I'm ashamed of being British when i go travelling and feel like i have to apologise. don't get me wrong i love the British countryside, our humour, our beer, our roast dinners, our accents, our slang, and i cant help but being conflictingly proud of how badass the SAS is. but i think its the politics that i hate and the fact that the country voted to leave the EU which i feel ashamed for when abroad - Like we think we are better than Europe? I for one would want to join more countries together, not separate us.
