It's a mixed bag. It was a lot of work, and ultimately not a perfect outcome. Definitely a better-than-before outcome though. The floor was just so out of level this was the best I could come up with without raising the entire basement floor at extraordinary expense. So after having used that room for half a year now, there are a couple spots with a little bounce. Not terrible, but noticeable. So I resorted to drilling small holes and injecting Big Stretch caulking to support a couple of the worst areas. This helped. If I had to do it again... I'm not certain. I would probably live with the small deficiencies that resulted from the way I did it rather than sink thousands into raising the entire floor and having to redo the bathroom floor which would have been submerged. Hope this info helps 😉

So I probably should have elaborated on this more in the video. The backer board is called DensShield. They specifically tell you not to put a vapor barrier, because the board is waterproof, and becomes the vapor barrier. Also, all the joints were sealed with polyurethane caulking following the installation instructions of the DensShield exactly. I know it looks like a different installation than typical backer board, but I followed the instructions to the letter. 🙂

Oh yeah it's definitely not a 100% watertight system. Some leeching into the soil is fine. It's basically just to account for very heavy rain days. Couple years later I still haven't seen any water in the basement. It's working super well 😁

It was $4000 CAD ($3000 USD) for the materials. For everything. There was no labor cost other than my time. And I suppose costs are relevant to location, and this was in south eastern Ontario, Canada.

Like many a job, something seemingly simple escalates to complicated and potentially lots more work than expected. Been there! You could pull some drywall off and see if there's anything in the way of reframing the RO to the size you want, then fix the drywall up. See how one job becomes two.. or three jobs 😂🤦 Good luck

Yep, I knew it. The house was built with 1 1/2, and it stayed 1 1/2. Never had a problem, never will be a problem with a single showerhead. 😉

I used Mapei "Large Tile & Stone Mortar" from Lowe's. But since then I've used Mapei Ultraflex LFT and much much prefer it. I used it on my own shower and will use it again.

Thanks much appreciated. I don't recall exactly but I seem to recall my reasoning worked something like... Next full mortar line in the brick above the top of where the door would be. I wanted it as close to the door as I could get it because it was going to need to be trimmed from the lintel down to the top of the door and I didn't want a 6" piece of wood to fill the gap above the door. Hope that made sense.

I was motivated by the ridiculous prices and low quality of renovations being offered by local contractors. I started knowing absolutely nothing. I watched a ton of CZcams and sweated the details. I get great enjoyment from solving problems, this was just something else that needed solving 🙂

I'm really not sure if anyone is actually required to hire a plumber for just simple connections like attaching a shower base, I didn't even look into it (whoops 😬). I didn't/don't know anything about plumbing either, but a P-trap attached to a shower base attached to the existing waste pipe appeared (as you could see in the video) to be not complicated whatsoever. My vote is go for it (carefully) 🙂

We he make out with the wood floor? I had to level a floor in.an old century home that was out 4 inches. All I had to do was remove the wood floor, sister in new beams and put down new plywood floor. Sure that's easier than concrete.

$4000 CAD (I'm in Canada). The price wasn't meant to indicate it was cheap or expensive, just what it cost me in materials.

@@newbtuber333 Well, a few things at play here. $4000 CAD is only $2900 USD. The door itself was $1000 + tax.. but just in general we pay far higher prices in Canada for basically everything. It is what it is 🤷. We're kind of numb to it haha

Thank you. Actually my second but this was far more complex than my first haha. I did my own ensuite shower after this one and I tiled the pan (pebbles) and I much prefer it. You can't argue with simplicity and waterproofness of a premade pan though. I think it was about 3 weekends start to finish. If I recall it was 90% GoPro and 10% smartphone. GoPro was the only way to fit anything in frame in that tiny space.
