I'm curious about In Memorium but I'm wondering if it falls into a torture porn type book? Just misery on top of misery. I don't enjoy those at all.
I also really dislike that type of book but this one managed to avoid that for the most part. It is depressing because of the subject matter but there is some hope in there as well 😊
This is now the gold standard for tag videos! I loved hearing your answers, and now I wanna make my own new one-minute tag, somehow lol!! Seriously, so fun 💜👻

Hello! Sorry I just found your 'mention' after three months - apologies! Great to hear your view on A Song for Ella Grey!
Thank you for the recommendation! It was fun to have a different take on a re-telling
Aghhh, Birnam Wood is waiting for me on my shelf! I was hoping it would have some clever Shakespeare references too...no?? Hmm. PS I was just visiting Bellingham, WA, and there was development inside an arboretum that was called Birnam Wood... 😁 Glad you had a good visit!
Thanks! That sounds cool! I would love to hear what you think of Birnam Wood 😊

How to Say Babylon is sooo good! I loved it and I immediately got her poetry collection after reading it! It sounds like you had a wonderful visit...but why would you read Drowning on a plane??????
😆
I usually just read what is next on my list and it aligned poorly with my trip 😅 I should think things through before jumping into books 😂
Sunds like a wonderful visit with family. I love to read on an airplane - nothing to do but read! No distractions :) Re: The Myth of Normal - as someone with a serious chronic illness, that kind of thinking is a slippery slope and can led to blaming the patient for a disease that is completely beyond their control. Glad you pointed that out. I agree - it IS irresponsible! Oh, no - you read a plane crash book while on a plane?? Yikes! I've heard good things about Birnum Wood. How to Say Babylon sounds great! Lots of books finished for a family week!
I was so excited to read since I went without children on the plane for the first time in 8 years! It was great to get through a few books but I might have been a little more critical with all that time to sit with the books 😬 I think The Myth of Normal had some important points about looking at health more holistically but overall I was not happy with how things were presented.
@@savagereads Ah, yes - plane travel after your kids are grown is entirely different - lots of reading time :)
You are very brave to read that book before a flight! I need to get to Birnam Wood. It’s on my kindle being neglected.
I would love to know what you think of Birnam Wood! It was a little slow going at first for me but I was on an airplane so maybe everything felt slow 😅
Welcome back! I'm glad your trip was a fulfilling time of connecting. I, too, read Drowning just before a long-haul flight. An unwise decision. 😅 Just added Babylon to my never-ending list but won't be picking up The Myth of Normal. Not a fan of self-help books to begin with and this sounds infuriating as I suffer with multiple chronic illnesses (and had a happy childhood). Thank you!
Yes! I dislike self-help usually and as someone with an autoimmune disease it was annoying to feel like I was being told I should just do some mental work to fix it. I did agree with some of his points that doctors should look at health holistically because there are factors in someone's history and environment that can be contributing to their illnesses but he went overboard. You understand my pain on reading Drowning before a flight 😅 It was really bad timing on my part
@savagereads Autoimmune diseases are tough. Living with them makes us qualified experts! I get the holistic vantage points and learning is always a good thing. But this sounds outside my realm. Next flight my book choices will be terra ferma. 😀 I found myself scrutinizing the cabin crew and plane seams a little more than usual!
Yay!! I’m so glad you enjoyed How To Say Babylon. Her poetry background really shines in her writing. I really appreciated how much it taught me about Jamaica and Rastafarian culture. I’m currently pushing through Birnam Wood right now for a buddy read. It is very exposition heavy.
Thank you for your recommendation! How To Say Babylon was so informative, touching, and well written. Just all around amazing. Good luck with Birnam Wood! There is some payoff to the exposition but I was annoyed how much work I had to put in to get to the end.
Considering I completely forgot about The Porcelain Maker, you’re right. It does blend in with other Holocaust historical fiction. I did appreciate that it covered something a little bit different. Gah. I hated Wrong Place, Wrong Time. I just could not buy into it. Ooh I got two picks in this video! 😮 Yes! I agree with the reading a story at a time. I spread it out a bit too. There were some great themes in it. Plus, I can’t get over how gorgeous the cover is. There were like 2 stories I didn’t love, but overall I thought it was really solid.
Thank you so much for the recommendations! I really enjoyed them! I completely see not liking Wrong Place Wrong Time. I was really in the perfect mood for a book like that. There were issues with it but I had fun 😅
Loved Bad Blood. That was a page turner. You may also enjoy The Art Thief by Michael Finkel (my jaw dropped several times reading this one). Coincidental title but can also recommend The Feather Thief by Kirk Wallace Johnson. Two of my favorites from last year.
Thank you for the recommendations! I am adding both to my TBR right now!
Thanks for doing our tag! I LOVE the rapid fire style !!! So fun.
Thank you for creating it! I had a good time!

Very interesting! I rarely buy new books and instead get them from NetGalley or free from Amazon and free little libraries. When I do buy books they usually come from used book sales. However, in my Canada house I have about 1,500 books...but now that we live 75% of the time in Croatia I don't utilize the library system as I should as I'm not fluent enough to read novels in Croatian. Some books are English but only a tiny percentage.
Here's to a great reading summer. Best wishes.
Thank you!
So glad you enjoyed Wrong Place Wrong Time! I agree, it was so fun to read it (I made my boyfriend read it too, to see if he would be surprised by the ending!) The Golden Compass is on my list, is this a good book to read in winter? I have Moon of the Crusted Snow, excited to read it 😊
Thank you for the recommendation! I can't wait to hear what you think of Moon of the Crusted Snow! Are you a "read books about cold places in the summer to feel cool" or a "read books about cold places in the winter because it is relatable" person? If you like books about cold places in winter then yes!
I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed Wrong Place, Wrong Time. I have that one sitting on my TBR shelf!
It had it's moments of being kind of silly or cliche but it was a really fun time!
Hi Hannah! I tagged you to do ‘The Don’t You Forget About Me,’ tag created by Bookworm Adventure Girl. It’s airing on Saturday.
Thank you! I will have to try it out!
I loved The Goldne Compass, or Northern Lights as it's known in the UK. I wish i read it when i was a kid. I gave my trilogy to my niece, so i never read book 2.
It was a fun one! I am excited to see what happens in book 2 because I do not remember it at all!
Paradise Falls sounds very intriguing.
It was an fascinating one. I hadn't heard much about the chemical issues at love canal so it was interesting to see what happened
That sweater colour is lovely! I'm not a knitter but my mom is and I appreciate the work that goes into it. It must be gratifying to see the body and sleeves come together. I'm glad you update us on your projects! So homey and comfy. I liked The Porcelain Maker, too. Not the ultimate but perfectly fine. Wrong Place, Wrong Time sounds like a blast! I'm going to prioritize this one. Thanks, Hannah!
Thank you so much! I love having a project to keep my hands busy 😊 I hope you enjoy Wrong Place Wrong Time! It was fun but maybe a bit cliche in parts. I still had a great time!
@savagereads Cliché is fine as long as the story is fun...and it sure sounds like it is! Hope you're keeping cool in Spain. We haven't dreadful temperatures yet in Croatia but they're on their way! Not fond of heat yet also despise cold Saskatchewan winters which I do NOT miss!
@@maslina4567 Thanks! So far the summer hasn't been too bad. We even got some much needed rain! But the hot weather is on the way 😬
@savagereads I'm glad you have had rain! I already look forward to cooler September and October. Yet don't want time to zip by.
Fantastic
Thank you!
I totally agree about Never Whistle at Night. I listened to the audiobook over the course of a few months and it was so nice to savor it
That sounds ideal! It was not a book that I should have rushed through
So good to see you! Just put Wrong Place Wrong Time on hold. Can't wait!
It was so good to see you as well! I would love to hear what you think of Wrong Place Wrong Time 😊
@@savagereads Loved Wrong Place Wrong Time! My only complaint was the number of F-words. Started to feel lazy. Otherwise, very clever and entertaining.
@@jennjoy2scrap I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Sorry about the F-words! I never seem to notice 😅
@@savagereads I don't know if I would either, but I try to mention content (I.e. language, sex, violence) in my Goodreads reviews. I wish there was some kind of rating system for books. I don't want to censor anyone, but it would be nice to have some type of content warning.
I’ve been knitting for many, many, many years and am only ever successful with afghans. Whenever I attempt to make any type of clothing, it never fits….so I feel your pain. Good luck. Looks great so far.
Thank you! I have way more success making children's clothing. I can't seem to get clothes to fit me 😅Afghans take a lot of patience!
Oh wow I had totally forgotten about Redwall; I definitely read that as a child! I agree that sometimes rereading books from my childhood nowadays makes me realize what kinds of biases they have that I never even considered as a kid. I've read another Langford book in the past (about her time in NPS) that I didn't really love but I still want to try the Trail of the Lost since I'm such a big backpacking fan.
Yes! Re-visiting books that I read as a child is always such a gamble. They could be amazing, or they could be biased, or they could just be really poor writing that I didn't realize as a kid. Trail of the Lost is really interesting if you like backpacking. I have done some backpacking but my parents are really into it. The book made me nervous for their hikes!
Hi! 👋 New subscriber, so nice to find a fellow nonfiction reader who (judging by a previous video title) also knits. You read such a wide variety of books! I’ve been wanting to “The Emperor of All Maladies” for quite a while, and “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” also sounds very interesting. I used to work as a nurse and used to see patients who struggled with addiction; the books on the opioid epidemic sound heartbreaking. I read Bad Blood a year or two ago! Excellent book! One of the whistleblowers, Tyler Shultz, has an audible original book called “Thicker Than Blood”, where he talks about how difficult it was to stand up against Theranos. If you haven’t listened to it yet, I highly recommend it. Thanks for all the recommendations!
Hi! Thank you for watching and subscribing 😊I do love a good nonfiction book and knitting project! Thank you for the recommendation! I will have to check it out
Ooo great recs! I really loved Prairie Fires, the Laura Ingalls Wilder biography! I felt like I learned so much about American history!
Thanks for the recommendation! I have added it to the TBR 😊
Great Video
Thanks for watching!
Yes! I've read and agree with so many of these books. There are a few that have been on my list for a while and I'll have to move them up. I don't think I'd ever heard of Billion Dollar Whale before, I'm adding it to my list. Have you read Ghosts of the Orphanage by Christine Kenneally? Others that come to mind are Cobalt Red by Siddharth Kara, Still Life with Bones by Alexa Haggerty, America Redux by Ariel Aberg-Riger (I think this one works best if you read the physical book), The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein, The Fifth Act by Elliot Ackerman, and What Doesn't Kill You by Tessa Miller.
I haven't heard of most of these! Cobalt Red has been on my list for a while but I am adding the others right now. Thank you for the recommendations!!!
I need to come back to this video before non-fiction November 😁 I love Hiroshima and Say Nothing. I own King Leopold’s Ghost but haven't read it yet, but I really enjoyed his book To End All Wars which is about conscientious objectors in WWI. I also have Missoula, I think I must have bought that based on your recommendation at some point.
To End All Wars sounds fascinating! I will add it to my TBR right now. Thanks!
cheers ford that, also may like to read . Bridge Across My Sorrows by Christina Noble . Bent Not Broken ⋆ Lauren Roche . read both books 2006 : life changing.
Thank you for the recommendations! I love a good memoir 😊
My husband is obsessed with Redwall and just re-read the whole series. I tried the first book and went....REALLY?! Really?! I even tried to watch season 1 of the cartoon...still nothing.
I remember loving the books as a child but as an adult I just can't understand the appeal and the problematic aspects were really jarring🤷♀The cartoon! I used to watch that after school 😅
👏👏👏 awesome, best nonfiction list video I've seen in forever! Great video all around Hannah. I think I'm most interest in the death penalty related books you mentioned as it something I've never actually read much on and would definitely like to understand the subject better
Thank you so much! I learned so much from the death penalty books. I think everyone should really study the issue. So many people don't understand what happens, who is involved, how it is applied, and what it costs to both people and the system.
Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
As soon as I saw the title of this video, I knew I would be adding more books to my TBR 😅 Thank you for these great recommendations. King Leopold’s Ghost is definitely one from this list that’s stuck with me. Bad Blood was another great one. Would recommend Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez. That one changed the way I think about the world. Wizard of Lies by Diana Henriques is another good one about frauds.
Thank you! I read Invisible Women a few years ago and it was amazing! For sure a 5 star read 😊 I will add The Wizard of Lies to my TBR right now 😊
I loved this!! Okay the only ones I've read on this are Bad Blood, Dreamland, Empire of Pain, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and Say Nothing. But I want to get to Billion Dollar Whale, Know My Name (it's been on my TBR a while but I know it's going to be a hard read so I always put it off), Missoula (I think the last of the Krakauer books I have to get to), Hiroshima, and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee!!
That is a good amount of overlap! I hope you enjoy the other ones! Most of them are a little heavy in topic but are still really great 😊
This is a great list of titles. Of these I’ve read _Hiroshima, King Leopold’s Ghost_ and have _Emperor of All Maladies_ on my shelf. I have a lot of catching up to do. 😂 I agree that they have stuck with me.
Thank you! It is hard to forget Hiroshima or King Leopold's Ghost! I think you will like The Emperor of All Maladies when you get to it. It is information heavy but worth putting the time into!

"Another fantastic video! I always learn something new from your channel."
Thank you!
I love this! So interesting to audit the authors you haven't even realized you return to. Pratchett is definitely a staple for me to, I think he's a most re-read probably. It is always hard to weigh love vs prolific chess in counting like this. I probably weigh Susanna Clarke and Pratchett at a similar level of love, but of course she has so few books she would never be a most read author! Fortunately the Milk is a joy, I did a side by side read of two different illustrations of it a couple years ago, it was brilliant. Man I need to get back to rereading his work too... So many here I want to get to, I've got two Kingsolver books but haven't tried her yet. Wow that you read all of Millard's books in a year!
That is so true! There are authors that I would love to read more from but they only have a couple of books! Some authors win by being prolific. It is so worth it to go back through the authors that I read a lot from. Sometimes I notice that I have read 2+ books from an author and didn't like any of them! Being aware helps me avoid that 😅I think you would really like Kingsolver! She does a fantastic job
Hi, this is my first time to see your channel. I tried to read Redwall once, but couldn't get into it. Thanks for the summary. Trail of the Lost is a book I'd like to read. I live near the PCT close to the CA/OR border. I'd also like to read Into Siberia.
You might have more of a connection to Trail of the Lost living so close! I would love to know what you think of it! Thank you for watching 😊
Excellent knitting! I made a HUGE blanket with oversize needles and 3 strands of chenille yarn for my mom and she got me to make one for her friend. They love them, but what a pain! I've heard Redwall is a really good audiobook, but I haven't read any of them. I think I have a copy of the first book, Not all that excited to read it now. 🤣
Honestly Redwall would probably work better as an audiobook! Half the time I was just so bothered by trying to get through the dialects 😅 I don't know how you made more than one blanket with that yarn! I am swearing off of it forever 😂
I bought a Red Wall book recently 😂 I only bought it because I liked the cover and it's not the first one. I've only read Hamnet by O'Farrell and it was beautiful writing but it annoyed me quite a lot too. Into Siberia sounds right up my street.
😂I could see you really liking Into Siberia! I think I liked O'Farrell's memoir the best because it had a mix of great personal stories and her beautiful writing
First off, a totally superficial comment...that color shirt is perfect for you! Are you going to have your daughter continue to read the Redwall series on her own? I totally get that it wasn't a fun book to read--I never read it to my kids, but I did try reading Junie B. Jones and that was absolute hell--but it sounds like there are other issues with it. Just added Into Siberia and the PCT book to my TBR!
Thank you so much! The shirt is my favorite color. I have a problem where I fall in love with any clothing or home decor that is green 😅 We don't have any other Redwall books so unless she brings it up I am not going to offer to find any others 😬
