A spring on the linkage to the treaddle may alleviate some of the shock loading on your foot. I made a log splitter that was similar and had to change to verticle handles to prevent shock loading on my hand.

This seems weird but it’s useful strength… the most common thing people use strength for is carrying heavy crap in weird positions, whether they’re moving, building, or playing with kids… Or say your kid or partner gets hurt, you gotta pick them up and carry them to the car or to help… It’s extremely useful to be at least strong enough and flexible enough to avoid injury in daily tasks and potential circumstances like emergencies.
