Tonight I'm Telling You (Alternate Version) - Keith Colley
Title: "Tonight I'm Telling You"
Writer: Keith Colley
Artist: Keith Colley
Year: 1966
© 4-Star Music Co. / Administered by Sony/ATV Acuff Rose Music (BMI)
From a rare 4-Star Music acetate, this is an alternate version of the song found on the B-side of Challenge 59334. This sounds like a demo cut for a British artist like Herman's Hermits.

Unknown male vocal, from an 8-inch 45 RPM acetate recorded at United Western Recorders, Hollywood, CA, circa 1961-1963. The lead singer sounds a lot like Glen Campbell, and Glen was known to have cut numerous songwriting demos at Western Recorders in different vocal styles, but I am hesitant to declare outright that it's Glen. The backup singers sound like The Blossoms, and the musicians could ...

Instrumental track from an unlabeled mono 10-inch 45 RPM demo acetate from Western Recorders, Hollywood, CA, circa 1964-1966. The voice at the beginning yelling "Let's Go!" is audio engineer Chuck Britz. It sounds like this was cut at the tail end of a recording session, and the studio time was running out! Unknown male vocal and big band accompaniment, from a 12-inch 45 RPM acetate recorded at United Western Recorders, Hollywood, CA, circa 1962-1965. The singer sounds a bit like crooner Dick Haymes. How interesting to learn of the origin and originator of this excellent number. By far the best version of Escape is that by The Mustangs from Madras, India in the late 60s.

    You can't hear a better near-60yr old Acetate of a master recording session. Phil was a great artist. His voice was 1 of the best in the business. Adler and Jay Lasker were monsters; I'm surprised he stayed with them through 1967. We recorded together; he produced Then It Begins, Ordinary Girl, Don't Start Me Talkin' About My Baby, I've Got No More To Say, Autumn, and Penny Arcade for the Thomas Group. I sang lead, and Phil and me with Barri sang backups. Chuck Britz engineered, at Western.

    How did you find all these. I’m quite obsessed with this era/studio/and session members. I’ve been into all things 60s for a couple decades now and have really narrowed into this studio and group of musicians. I just can’t get over how magical it all seems to me.

    I like this music - the twanging electric instrument reminds me of the opening theme Henry Mancini wrote for the movie Wait Until Dark. Sounds like a theme for a movie, perhaps a comedy story that got halted in production.

      Unfortunately none that are Maureen-related... I was lucky to acquire a set of acetates from the collection of LA engineer Chuck Britz, and that was the only one related to Maureen. It must have been a memorable session, for him to have kept it for all those years.

    A great version of this by The Ventures is on their 1966 album "GO WITH THE VENTURES".

      @HJFRD Před 11 měsíci

      Yes, Danny created this song for The Ventures in 1966. He played with The Ventures during those years and composed songs for them. Other songs composed by Danny include "Diamond Head," "War of the Satellites," "Wild and Wooly," "The Galop," and "Kandy Koncoction." It would be great to listen to the demos of all these tracks. Danny was very skilled with the guitar; at just 16 years old, he began composing for The Ventures and playing with them and other greats like Jerry Lee Lewis. He also composed for Lawrence Welk.

    This is fantasic! It sounds like a Tommy Garrett or Dave Pell produced LIberty pop instrumental record - or a movie love theme... The arrangement is very tasty. It sounds like an instrumental of a song that has lyrics. What is likely the hook feels a lot like Sealed With A Kiss. The bridge has a nice Burt Bacharach/Teddy Randazzo type melody and quarter note triplet rhythm in the trombone. The loping feel of the track does have an Italian Western feel to it. It doesn't have the Italian quirkiness, tho. Sounds All American.

    At the 2:39 mark you can hear a slight bit of vocal leakage -- either from the vocal booth, or the conductor singing the lead line off-mic to keep time.

    If you listen closely, you can hear someone in the studio humming the vocal melody line right before the guitar "answer" at the end of the first verse...
