This is the 2nd and 3rd flight of my Top Flite 60 size P-47. I maiden it just about an hour before this, but did not get it on film. It flew quite well... check out some of my other videos for to see it in the building stages. I didn't get the gear to work on this first day... Had some bugs to work out... They seem to be working now.

She's been flown maybe 21 or so times now. Banged it up a few times, but nothing major... just a few scratches and dents here and there... Got the kinks worked out now... but she's not quite a pretty now... but won't take much to touch it up... Happy that she still flying and flying very well... Haven't put the Pilot in still or hooked up the bomb pylons... Maybe good things to do over the wint...

    I would never fly my Top Flite P-51 kit around that many people. That's nuts!I can fly well. I have just seen to many electrical and mechanical failures.

    Looks like it flys great! And it looks great. What is the overall weight?And what engine is in it?

      +Dan P It has a OS 91 FS in it. I'm guessing it weighs over 12 pounds. I've never weighed it.

    Did you paint the stars and bars and all numbers on? Or are some decals?

    • @javaplusWaverly
      @javaplusWaverly Před 8 lety

      +Dan P Everything in this video is painted on other than the "Spirit of Atlantic City NJ" part. That was a rub on decal (dry transfer). I got the stencils and the dry transfers from www.getstencils.com/ . It was about $70 for all of them, but as you can see they can work very well. Results could have been better if I'd taken more time.

    I ordered the fiberglass cloth from cst composites. I ordered this: Fiberglass Cloth 0.7 oz., 38" 10-24 yds. I didn't use the robart hinges fire the ailerons. I used simple ca hinges.

    hi ,,im building the same kit and im thinking of using fiberglass cloth covering for this kit. what size of fiberglass cloth did you use? also did you use the same size of robart hinges for the ailerons too?? let me know, i would really apreciate your response....

    Can you explain how you did the inner door set up?

    • @javaplusWaverly
      @javaplusWaverly Před 10 lety

      Sorry for not replying sooner... Not sure if you are still interested... First of all, the inner doors are purely mechanical... That is there is no servo or anything driving them. The are purely put up(closed) and down by the wheel. They are closed by the wheel hitting the lever inside the wing, which causes the metal rod with the clevises to pull the door shut. They are put down by the wheel "falling" and pushing the door open. There are 3 strong little magnets that help hold the inner doors in the open or closed position. One is on the lever that moves up and down inside the wing. One is between the hinges on the inside of the bottom sheeting (this one is used to hold the inner door open). The last magnet is on the top sheeting(inside the wing). This helps hold the lever in the closed position(maybe not necessary since the wheel will usually do this). The inner doors, of course, are hinged to the bottom of the wing... I actually notched out the bottom sheeting of the wing a little so the hing half that hooks to the wing is recessed a little. I think I added strips of balsa on the inside of the wing to screw the hinge into. I used tiny screws and nuts to connect the other hinge half to the inner door. I used tiny control horns on the inside of the inner doors. They are what the little clevis's hook onto. The clevises are screwed onto two ends of a very small push rod ( I think used for tiny electrics). The push rod was bent into the upper part of a goal post. Has to be wide enough for the bottom part of the tire to fit between. Before bending this pushrod, I put it through a little pushrod tube. This pushrod tube is hooked to the lever... In this video it was just duct taped till I figured out the right place Then I believe I glued it. The lever is hooked to a hinge that is connected to the inside of the upper sheeting. If you pause the video at 0:47, you can see this hinge at the right. The far right half of the hinge was just duct taped at this filming. It's been permanently glued now. Hope this description helps some??? If not ask more questions. Here's another video that explains a little more.. Top Flite P-47 60 Size Custom Gear doors

    It can land slower than that...this was my first day flying and I knew I built it heavy so I didn't want to risk landing it too slow and stalling... With all the custom retract gear and fiber glass parts it ways over 12 pounds...the arf should be a lot lighter. Also because of the position of my retracts it has a tendency to want to nose over when taxing...and a lot of flap seems to make it worse..so when landing on grass I don't use much flap deflection which again leads to hot landings.

    Hey man, nice scale retracts do you operate them with air? If yes you should restrict the air going out of the cilinder for smooth and strong operation that is when the restrictors are Free flow in and restricted out, i am a pneumatic specialist so If you have any questions just ask ok, cheers mate greets from the Netherlands, Michael.

    I have a build thread here on RCScalebuilder... I added the link to the description of the video. You may have to register to get to the forum though... registration is free... but to post you have to be a site supporter... but once you register you can view the posts...On page 10 of my build thread I talk about the retracts... I also added a link to a bunch of pics in the description as well... if you need more pics or a video let me know... I'd be glad to help out...

  • @javaplusWaverly
    @javaplusWaverly Před 12 lety

    Yeah... I ran several tanks of fuel through it breaking it in... probably about half a gallon... Did the run rich, lean it for a few seconds, and then back to rich method like suggested in the manual. I run a sullivan on board glow igniter with mine. It comes on when I'm a little bit below half throttle. I use a 1600MaH 4.8Volt receiever pack for it. And I use 2 2000MaH 6V packs for the receiver with dual switches.

    Once I switched out my stock muffler for an aftermarket exhaust and didn't re-check the CG... And it turned out the new exhaust was much heavier. When I flew after changing mufflers, I had 2 violent complete flips, both on take off... when the tail started coming up, it just rotated up and flipped all the way over and upside down. When I got home I rebalanced it and it went back to being much better... still have to be careful taking off and landing on grass, but it's tolerable.

  • @javaplusWaverly
    @javaplusWaverly Před 12 lety

    My only issue has been with taxing... it wants to nose over if you are not careful. I balanced it right on the recommended point and the nose tipping wasn't too bad... it was tolerable and decently smooth grass runway... I got to fly off pavement 2 days and nose tipping wasn't an issue at all.

    Sorry for the late reply... I used Robart air retracts. With a tiny HS-81 servo actuating the air valve. These are the Robart 605HD (90 degree Air Retracts) with the 653L and 653R strut covers ... The manual called for the 85 degree retracts, but I went with the 90 degree ones after I modified the mounting rails to make them retract further up in the wing.

  • @oooGreeooo
    @oooGreeooo Před 13 lety

    @javaplusWaverly Well... 1. Silicone you can get from any hardware store - you know the stuff you seal your shower recess with - clear stuff dries rubbery 2. I have never used fuel. I'm all electric. If it was me I'd fill the wood grain somehow first, but if you're not worried about aesthetics then I guess fuel proof paint then green paint?Another idea may be to use thin glass cloth inside the wheel wells with epoxy to seal it first. Sorry I'm no fuel expert!

  • @oooGreeooo
    @oooGreeooo Před 13 lety

    @javaplusWaverly Wow! excellent. I am glad it helped you out. I really like the way you did your inner doors. Much better than how I was originally going to try to do them...

  • @javaplusWaverly
    @javaplusWaverly Před 13 lety

    2 questions Gree... 1- I'm stupid...where do you get silicon for the airlines...2- what do you suggest for the wheel wells...I'm not doing anymore work..I just want to paint them green but not sure if I need to seal the wood somehow or not first or if I can just use some fuel prof paint directly.

  • @javaplusWaverly
    @javaplusWaverly Před 13 lety

    Gree... dude...I've had your build thread bokmarked forever...I used it to figure out how to do my retracts! So thanks! And yes it was hard and I didn't do the extra work like you to move the gear to the scale location.

  • @oooGreeooo

    Nice. I'm building one of these too. Aren't the retracts tricky to get to work in a scale like manner?
