Welcome to Folk on Foot, the award winning podcast that brings together the three passions of the broadcaster Matthew Bannister - folk music, walking and telling stories in sound. Many of the UK’s top folk artists have walked, talked, played and sung with us in spectacular locations ranging from mountain tops to remote white sand beaches and from a disused brick factory near Sheffield to a Sussex wood in the middle of the night. We have captured the sounds of the natural world: curlews circling overhead, waves crashing on the shore, rivers burbling under bridges, campfires crackling and above all feet tramping through all kinds of terrain. And the music takes on a new power when you hear it performed in the places that inspired it.

Ranagri at Ranagri
The Anglo-Irish band Ranagri take us for a walk on the farm that gave them their name. The family of guitarist and singer Dónal Rogers have worked this land in County Carlow since the 1600s. His Mum, Lena, still lives there and tells stories of growing up in the three room thatched farm house she shared with her mother and ten siblings. There was no electricity or running water and all cooking was on the open fire. Horses were used to pull the plough. Then Ranagri play the music inspired by her memories.

Bats lodge inside the hollow oaks, and their droppings help fertilise the tree. How do I know? As a child playing inside the oak at one of King John's Farm recorded in the Doomsday Book.

I grew up in the next cresent, me nan n grandad lived in St Michaels Cresent. Very musical family too. My grandad was a steeplejack. Cant beat your roots
