The squirrels have virtually eaten my entire tomato 35+ garden. I kid you not, I harvested under 8 tomatoes. 😭 I gave them water early in the season and on hot days, which helped keep them away. But once they san marzanos ripened it was over. I'm really showing my Southern roots here, but I swear I just want 🔫 down the little b******s!

Your channel is literally the best

Chocolate Sprinkles is one of my favorite cherry tomatoes. They are beautiful, very prolific and taste great. I grow them every year and it’s rare that any of them make it into the house. My kids always strip the vine clean.

This year I'm growing Goldkrone cherry tomatoes. Sweet with rich tomato flavour. Prolific and holds really well in hot weather. I'm very pleasantly surprised.

I have a lot of squirrels around the yard and they get into everything. The worst is they tear down my sunflower plants and even shred my weed plants (if seeded). They just dont seem to be a problem with my tomatoes so I'm very surprised you have problems with them. I'm 30 minutes east of you so same varieties of squirrel. I might see one or two exploratory bites from something but I havent seen them running away with fruit, yet. I saw a mouse in the tomato patch, some other critter liek maybe a groundhog yesterday. Birds maybe seem to be poking holes in some tomatoes and it seems just a couple varieties like berkley tie die and prairie fire, which is weird.I also now have a rabbit that is somewhat socialized to me, hangin round my tomato patch but he appears to be interested in the weeds only and naps under the tomato canopy. So yea I have something poking some small holes into tomatoes and the squirrels dont appear to be an issue.

A good contrast to choco cherry is Sunrise Bumblebee. It has the very sweet tangy flavour that non-black tomatoes have, amazing yellow with red stripes beauty, large size like the choco and good production and plant habit. I grow both of these, they are both available through mckenzie seeds so easy for canadians at least to source (canadian tire, wal-mart, etc.) though they might not both be available online, you can get them in store displays. Together they are both excelent flavour but very different contrasting flavour and colour. It hasnt been a problem with cracking or anything. I'm currently looking into contrasting shapes like pear and the tubular icicle shape tomatoes. I cant recommend any yet cuz its my first season growing some prairie fire and choco pear allong with some green doctors. I have never tried a sungold.

Black strawberry tomato is pretty good, and it's very pretty

Mochi for the interesting consistency and sweetness and very shiny. Described as biting into a gum drop. Thin skin- Does not store well. Third year growing. These and sungolds are my go to cherry varieties along with Galina's Yellow as they are the first to produce and last to produce, prolific, and cold hardy (but rather bland)

We have had trouble with squirrels in past years, but this year they have not bothered my tomatoes for some reason. Perhaps it is because we've had a rainy year. I grew black cherry last year and enjoyed it. My favorites (so far) are Sungold and Sun Orange. I should try Chocolate Cherry because I love dark tomatoes! I want to try Rosella Cherry, too.

Hi Lucas, great video - your garden is lush and healthy. I have grown both types of cherries and chocolate cherry is delicious! My tomatoes are a buffet for rabbits and squirrels; will try your deterrents, your Mom is awesome 🦉! I have sweet 100's, and beefsteak. Would like to try Sungold next year. A favorite is yellow Sunrise Bumble Bee, and there's a purple Sunrise Bumble Bee (def trying next year). "The garden is my canvas, and I paint it with plants." Artists indeed 🌻🐝🍅🌞

Sorry to hear about the squirrels. Another thing that might work is adding tulle around your plants. I've seen people even build a fence out of it. Thanks for the recommendation about the Chocolate cherry. Black cherry is my favorite but haven't tried that one. :)

The Christmas ornaments is a good idea. I have bird feeders and squirrels near my garden. The Squirrels usually go for the bird seed and leave my garden alone. If you put out birdseed though, you're just attracting more.

When I started to understand the microbes in the soil I now never need to fertilize but still can if I want too but I like the fact I save more money now.

Because of all the hype, I grew Sungold this year and even though the taste was okay the splitting really turned me off. I won’t be growing them again. I’ll stay with the super sweet 100!
