Aprilia RSV4 - Noisy Engine - Chain Tensioner
Aprilia RSV4: Fixing a Noisy Engine (Timing Chain Tensioner)
Hey everyone, welcome back to the channel! Today we're tackling a common gremlin for some early Aprilia RSV4s - a noisy engine. This is often caused by a failing timing chain tensioner. Luckily, there's an updated part that Aprilia released to fix this issue permanently. So, let's jump in and see how to get your RSV4 purring like a kitten again!
**Disclaimer:** Before we begin, remember to consult your RSV4's service manual for specific torque specs and procedures. This video is for informational purposes only, and working on a motorcycle can be risky. If you're not comfortable with the process, seek help from a qualified mechanic.
Once everything is back in place, fire up your RSV4 and listen for any unusual noises. If the timing chain tensioner was the culprit, your engine should sound much smoother and quieter now. Take your bike for a test ride, paying attention to performance and for any leaks.
**Final thoughts:**
Fixing a noisy timing chain on an Aprilia RSV4 with the updated tensioner is a straightforward process, but it does require some mechanical knowledge. If you're unsure about tackling this job yourself, don't hesitate to take your bike to a trusted mechanic.
Thanks for joining me today! If you enjoyed this video, give it a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel for more motorcycle maintenance tips and tricks. Until next time, ride safe!

How much does this cost??
I've got to work on one of these that has a massive turbo fitted. My friend thought it only had 3 cylinders. When I first saw it in the boat only three cylinders were visible with the front part of the rear deck up. I crouched down and started counting cylinders. "Three, four, five, six, mahoosive turbo." You should have seen the look on his face.
I v got yamaha FZ 8 and recently charged up battery as I v got parasite draw but it drains battery at slow rate around 3 days then I charged up battery and it's cracking engine but bike not starting and 9n display coming up hight temperature where should be low make me wonder if battery somehow causes it and was completely flat before so I had it on repair cycle and then charged up? By the way great video
Super! Thank you!
Hi How much it cost that kind of work?
@@Titoftam I can't remember, sorry 😞
Great vid and it's confidence inspiring! Sub'd!
I noticed on the video you didnt use a crankshaft locking pin, is this necessary to use? Im doing my chain next week on my trafic and wondered if i would get away having to try and access the locking pin location and just use the camshaft sprocket locking tool.
This is just one way of doing the job, if it's your first time, then use locking tools! Good luck 👍
Hi, what year was this vehical was it 5 speed or 6 speed manual? I have a 2006 2.0 tdi 5 speed manual boxer with selector problems. So interested to know if this is the same gearbox. Plastic internals on a gearbox is a ticking time bomb in my opinion
Great video mate. My 2018 A Class 200D has just thrown up the battery warning symbol with the message 'stop vehicle and check the manual'. The Stop/Start use to be active almost immediately but over the 3 years I've had it it's taken longer and longer to become active (the orange indicator for it on the dash had to go green before it would kick in) to the point where it doesn't kick in at all now so I'm guessing it must be the Auxiliary battery which to my knowledge has never been changed, unlike the main battery which I replaced with a Bosch 3 years ago. Il change the auxiliary battery now I've seen you superb video on it. Keep up the great work sir! 👍 🍻
Do I need to remove the engine to replace the oil pump?
alot of bikes normally are too lean to start if filter and airbox are missing. also u need to snap the throttle a couple times after each synch screw adjustment to get throttle plates firmly seated.
Thanks for your input, you don't need the airbox on to balance carbs, you only need them on if you're adjusting the CO! Thanks for watching & commenting 🙂👍
How did you know it was 180 degrees out? Any ideas if a 1.9 2004 vivaro camshaft can be 180 degrees out? I've been told no. I will be doing the belt tomorrow
It's kinda my job to know what's right and wrong! 😁 All camshafts can be 180 out as the crank has to turn twice for the cam to turn once!
Why do they seize , apparently common in Peugeots, is it always because of cross threading or poor sealing down to poor manufacture ?
every how many miles it needs valve adjustment
Hi, every 12k miles or 20k kilometres 👍🙂
@@melsmotors I'm about to buy a shiver 750 2008 model with around 48.000 kilometers, what should I check ?
@@badrijan9704 the usual stuff , tyres, brakes, chain, service history.
I have same noise my 2020 tiger1200 desert edition which at 22.000km , I asked for brand new alternator and it cost really too much for me because of high currencies.
where did you get your mosfet regulator?
Hi man , grateful video. Just a quick question to ask, do you have to remove undercover or you got easy access without removing it on w205 2018 220d. Thanks?
Where would I take mine for a carb clean is thee a specialist place
Most bike garages will have an ultra sonic machine to clean the carbs for you
@@melsmotors thanks they don’t need doing but I’m new to to bikes so was just wondering thanks
I couldn't understand a word you said. You need to speak louder.
Besides the noise, what would have happened if this is not fixed?
Hi, not a lot, it will just get louder. You'll only hear this on idle, during riding it's quieter and drives normally 👍
@@melsmotors Thank you!
Thank you for posting this! Near impossible to find any info on doing this job. Great video.
Very well done mate
Thanks for watching and commenting ☺️👍
Hi what does this cost .
This job was charged out by time, from memory this was around an 8 to 10 hour repair plus parts! Hope this helps 👍
Hi, great tutorial, man! The problem only happens on the older versions or affects all models?
It happens to most of them including some of the R1's
@@melsmotors, a friend of mine with a similar one like mine, 2016 model, had the problem and installed a 2019 slipper clutch and problem is gone. Maybe he didn't ride the enough miles to get the problem back. I was thinking of doing the same but this repair you showed it's going to be way cheaper. Thanks again for your work, man. Best regards from Portugal.
Hi Thank you for the perfect video I have got the same code display in my car the same mercedes c class 200d. But my question is When i open the oil cap there is white smoking out of the oil cap, is it because of this code issue or there is any other problem? Can you please replay me. Thank you
That's quite normal for a diesel engine, it's the back pressure from the engine plus some of the combustion escaping past the rings, all normal unless it smells strongly of exhaust fumes! 👍😊
Thank you so much from your help.
Would like to clarify, you did not have to remove the airbox or throttle bodies to replace this alternator? Plus only the tank cover came off not a case of draining any fuel or coolant at all? My manual states all of the above need removing. Oh okay, just noticed by looking at the parts list that the black dome IS the airbox and not the tank lol. So it would appear that just the fuel tank needs removing.
Torque setting for the drive gear assembly nut is 54nm. Hellishly tight basically. The other 6 fixings are 3nm. Info straight from my service manual.
Do you know whether these ended up being E8 or E10? Do you have a recommendation on socket to use that fits in the small gap too? Thanks
Honestly I can't remember which tools I used, we repair around 4000 vehicles a year, sorry! Any make of tools should do the job! Good luck 😊👍
@@melsmotors Understood! :) Thank you! I've updated my other comment now, after a miserable 45 cramped minutes, the part has been replaced. Thanks again!
Really interesting to follow your chain of logic to find the faults. Give me a cryptic crossword rather than a wiring diagram any day. I ran a K1200S for several years but now have the much improved (by Ricardo) K1300S. My K1200S gave no problems apart from a pinhole leak in the rad. I'd read on the K-bike forums that if the electric brake servo failed on the K12, the residual braking was almost not-existent - luckily I never got the chance to find out.
Fiddly job ,my luk would have dropped 1 of thoose cam sprocket bolts down in the engine, nice job
Thanks for posting! This is the difference between a "Mechanical Engineer" and a "Fitter!"
Hy i have a corsa 1.2 2011 petrol and it shoes 2 codes p0161 and p0171 and i took off the pcv valve and you cant blow air tru it and i but my finger on the hose of engine and is runing the same if i take of the finger turns off after a while ,and all of this i think comes up after i cheange oil in gearbox and camshaft seal i had a little leak of oil in fron of engine but i put all back corectly i cant see where it cood be the problem , and when i drive it and gets warmed up it is hard to change and the gears i had to turn off the engine to shift , i let the car to a garage and told me is the clutch and that is it but the engine still has to work normaly please help me
And also with pcv valve conected it not has to open and close its stay shut all the time
Hi buddy, if I could fix cars via an email or over the telephone I would be a millionaire! 😂🤣 I need you car here to run tests!
I found today that even the exhaust the flexy one it has some holes because is making noise and gets air out , is posibel to be one from this the exhaust?
It can be fix and like that is more importent the ideeas and what to do instead the hard work
@@iuliantonu8656 sadly I can't tell you what to look at or fix without seeing the car, then scanning it and then reading the live data! It needs to go to a proper mechanic to diagnose the issue!

Thanks so much for your video, my Bentley front dropped after few days not driving, but when I started engine, it goes up again, is that normal?
That is normal for it to go up, but if it goes down after a couple of days it's usually a leaking air bag!
Amaizing work!
Hi I'm sorry my English is not good. I have a shiver 2015, millage 27k . my engine is noise, sounds like 'kluk kluk kluk' in the area camshaft..the sound is clear once the temperature meter shows 3 bar. Is it normal for v twin engine or not a normal bike?
HI, that doesn't sound normal! Get it checked out👍👍
That’s the grossest seat ever. No wonder the sensor failed. Helpful video, thanks for making and I hope you were able to get your hands clean after dealing with that mess.
Made that look easy! I don't need a clutch replacement on my 2005 YET, this just popped up so I watched it. LOL
My rpm gauge doesn’t work. Thought of replacing rpm motor, seems super easy. Ty
Came here too see how to remove top end to fit a new headgasket. left with no info. ;/
I had both inlet manifolds crack a different times on jaguar xf 3.0. No need to remove the body. Every jag owner needs a code reader a workshop manual and a smoker
Good job.Thanks.
how long will this last till the clutch starts rattling again?
I haven't had one come back yet!
Отлично 👍 Дело мастера боится.
When putting back the clutch metal plates and friction plates is there a special order ? Are they different thickness?
You always try and put them back in order, they can vary in size and thickness, plus the plates are mated together when bedded in!
There's another chain and sprocket to fix, behind the main one
Fab looking
You chose the exact wheel I was looking at on the wall! 😂 good wheel! Manan
Amazing work brother.....I have a 86 radain with the same clunck at idel... give it a bit of throttle and it's gone .. amazing Yamaha still. Has clutch basket issues has same play but instead it's a pin that is too small from factory easy fix tho just replace worn pin but it's actually better to get a slightly bigger pin and slightly drill out and tap it in can tell right away it's better because old pin jiggles around
(Porsche 981 Cayman 2014) I've got misfires on cylinders 1, 2 and 3, along with the P1382 code. I'm also seeing PSM codes pop up. I've ordered one of these, hoping it will sort the problem - will update.
I've changed the part on mine now and was able to clear the code. The car feels so much better immediately. For anyone else looking to do this on a jack on the floor, be ready for a little frustration. Super tight space to work in and I needed a bunch of adapters on my ratchet to make the gap work. I'm still none the wiser to the size of the bolts, I undone them with an E8 but when I had them out it looked like the E10's would probably do. Wasn't sure in the end but took it easy in case either decided to try and round the bolts. I've no idea how I'd get a tool in to tighten the bolts up to any specific Nm, so for now they're just done up by feel on my ratchet. Thanks for this video @melsmotors - a massive massive help!
