Thank you for the gorgeous music over the past 30+ years. Right place, right time, when I was driving to my parents in Stroudsberg, PA, in 1995 and listening to local college radio. The DJ played two songs unlike anything I had heard before. I called the station as soon as I got to my parents - look Ma, no cell phones! - and asked who those songs were by. One was “Swim” by Madder Rose, the second a little ditty by Belly called “King.” Life without Belly is a life that sadly doesn’t know what it’s missing. I am grateful to have found you that day.

Late to the show... heard this cut driving through Knoxville, TN, around 7:30 pm on 2023Dec26 listening to the student-run WUTK (FM 90.3 - 'UT's College of Rock'). Immediately captivated by the band's vintage, throwback sound. Anyway, got home and, being old school, ordered the CD. Tanya Donelly's vocals are reminiscent of three of my fem fatales: Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star), Anne Preven (Ednaswap), and Donnette Thayer (Game Theory)... so finding a new old band to deep dive into is a welcome way to enter 2024.

Sometimes when I hear this song, I am picturing my kid as the Human Child being addressed. And sometimes when I hear this song, the Human Child is me. It's so freaking brilliant.

No matter what I see going on in the world, I know I can come back to this song & video and feel my heart open again. Thank you Belly!

Don't care if anyone cares - I'm going to tell my Belly story: I was just coming of age in the mid-90s when Belly hit big. I bought Star and loved it, and got King towards the end of my first year in college. I listened to the hell out of that album - I remember it basically being the soundtrack of my Spring Break travels that year. Fast forward to the end of my second year. I finished my exams relatively early in the week, but decided to bum around in college-town rather than head back to my parents' house. When I finally did go back, I spent the next night hanging out with old friends - some returning from college as I was, some still in my home town. The ones who were home-towners were all talking about the concert they had been to the previous night and how good it was - of course it was Belly. I was pissed at myself - I could have come back earlier and gone to the show, but I thought "whatever - I'll see them next time they come throught". Then they broke up. And that was the end of it - or so I thought for over a decade. I was looking through the used CDs at a local music store around 2000 and came across Love Songs for Underdogs for $1. I remember loving Belly, so "what the hell", right? That CD became the best value music purchase I've ever made. I LOVE so many tracks on that album, and my favorite has shifted many times. For a while, it was my go-to "cooking" song: any time I was working in the kitchen, I would put that on, crack open a bottle of wine, and have a good time fixing up some fine grub. One night, many years later, I was playing online poker and wanted some music in the background. For whatever reason, I thought of Belly and picked a CZcams playlist for King. After a few hands, I was looking at the comments to one of the videos, and to my shock saw that they were back together and on tour. Not only were they on tour, but they would be playing the following Saturday (this was a Tuesday) in DC, a place not too far away from me. I called a friend I have who lived in the NoVa area, and made plans to go see them. I payed for his ticket as well as my own - there was no way I was going to miss this show. And what a show it was! I loved every moment of it, but the highlight was hearing Low Red Moon live. That was a song I liked, but it wasn't a favorite. Until I heard it live. Hearing that song live is a religious experience. The bass, the drums, and Tanya's voice combine into something ethereal and penetrating - this is what drove Man to build statues! I have since fallen in love with Dove as well, have gone over the moon for beautysleep, and am getting Tonya's other solo albums to round out my love. I saw the band again when they came back through DC, and brought a few more friends along as well. This band may have only had a couple of relatively minor hits on the pop charts, but they've had a major impact on my life. The hours I've spent listening to their music must number in the thousands. And I've loved every second of it. I'm glad my error in the 90's didn't kill my shot at seeing such a phenomenal band. Thanks for getting back together and giving us fans another chance to enjoy the experience of seeing you guys play live!
