Round The County 2022 on White Wing Day 2 of 2
The 22 RTC from a racer's POV part II. The OIYC Round the County is an iconic two-day Pacific Northwest regatta, right up there with Swiftsure. The 2022 edition was one for the books: ideal weather and tides with their sets of challenges, Pacific NW scenic beauty and 120 boats and 700+ sailors competing from the US and Canada. Fantastic event by the Orcas Island Yacht Club!
This video covers day two from Batteship Island to Lydia Shoal. Day one is available on this channel.
I was invited to crew on my friend's Joe White Wing, a custom New Zealand made 46-foot beauty, with Larry, Jeff, and Chris and Annie. I was the greenhorn among a crew of experienced racers, always an opportunity to learn a ton and document the race while sailing with my other hand. Thank you Joe and Gretchen for an awesome time, a fabulous boat and delicious food.
The video is entirely shot with my iPhone and made with little editing to experience what it feels like to be aboard.

Great write up on Sailish.com to read about the race

I didn't enter Pardon My French in the 77th/2022 Swiftsure, its first post Covid edition. Instead I was kindly invited to crew on North Star, a well raced and pedigreed Beneteau 40.7 First, owned and skippered by Clifton T. What started as a DriftSure turned into a long evening and night of serious whopping. Regrettably, the mainsail didn't survive an early morning gybe. We retired with the rac...

Solo Halloween Sail - Sailing SV Pardon My French (Raw Sailing Series)
zhlédnutí 282Před 2 lety
[timestamps below] This video is part of the Sailing SV Pardon My French's Raw Sailing Series. It is made with minimal editing, features no music, and some of the segments are long by design- all to give a more realistic feel for being on the water. I've tried something new by including a Point of View track starting at the 23-minute mark; it's shot with a head-mounted GoPro (glad no one could ...
Sunset and night raw sailing - Sailing SV Pardon My French
zhlédnutí 217Před 2 lety
Fall can reveal beautiful nights: Sunset, wind, mild temps. It was a good time for a single handed round trip across Puget Sound from Seattle to Bainbridge Island: an easy close haul and broad reach short passage. We sailed into the sunset and crossed back at night in 8 to 15 knots. This time of year, there's a very little traffic on the sound, except the occasional sailboat, ferry and freighte...
Floatplane ride - San Juan Islands to Seattle in a Beaver DeHavilland - Sailing Pardon My French

Take off, fly over the San Juans Islands, and land downtown Seattle, WA. Sometimes you need a float plane. I needed to leave Pardon My French for a week in Deer Harbor, WA to attend to business back in the city. I was lucky enough to catch a quick flight by Kenmore air in a classic Beaver DeHavilland - my favorite aeroplane. The flight takes about 40 minutes, but we had a few stops along the wa...
Blakely Rock Benefits 2018 short take - Sailing SV Pardon My French
zhlédnutí 325Před 3 lety
Short action from my friend Eric shot rounding Blakely rocks during the race of the same name in 2018. 100 boats started. 31 finished - we were among them. It was gusty and litterally a blast. Nothing broke, no one got hurt. The sound you hear are the dishes flying off... Kudos to Eric for capturing the moment.

This clip is a short compilation of our first sails with the new (to us) boat, as we make progress to make her ready for spring and summer. Thanksgiving weekend sail across Puget Sound from Seattle to Blake Island state park and Bainbridge Island. Nice sailing for our second outing on the new PMF, our 2006 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45. On the first day winds were to the South between 10 and 20, second day were calmer on the return. This is video is part of the new RAW Sailing Series and is unedited and purposely long. Swiftsure 2019 in Three Acts - Sailing SV Pardon My French in 4K!
zhlédnutí 403Před 4 lety
The 2019 Swiftsure didn't turn out as we anticipated. As the great majority of competitors, we made the call late on Saturday. The flood current in the strait of Juan de Fuca pushed us backward after bobbing on swells for a few hours at slack time. The forecast called for no and very light winds. Doing the math, we had no chance to complete the race within the allotted time. We're a heavy boat,...

What was supposed to be a direct shot across the strait of Juan de Fuca ended up in an epic sail with three crossings in one day each over 20NM, and with fantastic and strengthening sailing conditions. We have a fantastic Swiftsure to share with you in 4K! The 75th edition of the iconic Pacific Northwest race didn't disappoint: 123 nautical miles on the strait of Juan de Fuca between US and Canada along with another 100 boats. No need to anchor this year but we blew a jib and lost a drone... We didn't get even close to line or class honors (!) but we probably win the most-international-crew p...

Great video! Miss the Swiftsure, late 70's early 80's we would get 400+ boats for the Swiftsure. Made for a wild rafting party the night before.
Can I crew with you and your team?
Hi Jay. We’re not racing at this time and don’t have openings, but appreciated your inquiring.
Love it
very nice filming ang good finish, congrats!
Thank you!
nice job finishing, going in paid off! people out got screwed
It looks cold! What was the temperature?
Hey Michael. Good to hear from you. Yeah it was chilly but very survivable. In the 40s. The secret is layers. We lucked out on the weather. Sunny, light wind and dry.
This was fun to watch. It's a race we've always thought about going in, never made the effort. Is wind usually light?
This was my first one so i hear it's usually windier and much wetter... the hole at the finish line, though is a classic. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed!
@@SailingPardonMyFrench It sounds a lot like the Round Saltspring race, except you get a comfortable break on Saturday night at Roche rather than going all night long. The Friday night before the beginning of the race, do people anchor near the Orcas Island Yacht Club, or is there room to raft up on the adjacent dock?
@@spelunkerd The overnight is at Roche Harbor, space to dock/raft for all.
Hey...a lot of the tike it's like that when sailing...Great Job...!
Great...best one yet of Puget Sound...Lighting was great...Music was great...Do More...!
Thanks Greg! Appreciate that! Safe sailing.
Your Swiftsure videos are like my annual dose of PNW goodness. Thanks as always for posting!
In love with the SV! What model and year is it? I've recently started sailing, I have a 26ft toy sailboat essentially (swing keel) but it's easy to get in and out of the docks and easy to learn on😁 I see vessels like yours and always get warm and fuzzy haha
Hey Josh. Thanks she’s a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45. Happy and safe sailing to you!
What an absolute beautiful view, and I'm just talking about the helm of this boat😍 stumbled across your videos, really enjoying them
Thanks Josh!!
I just started learning to sail, but when I saw 15-25kt wind and it switched video to full jib and main I was super stoked, rarely ever do you see someone as strong as their vessel, most people would have turned upwind when the vessel keeled half that. I'd like to sail with YOU sometime sir bravo!
Nice sailing . Best regards from Jarle
Thank you!
Such a beautiful place to sail. Can't wait to get back someday... (Maybe!) Thanks, as always, for sharing!
Nice solo docking, hooray bow thrusters! I got to use them for the first time on a charter boat this fall (also a Jeanneau) and wow does it make things easier!
I miss solo sailing
Might be a little challenging to go solo across the panama canal. Suggest you wait until the crossing's over before going solo again :)
I sure miss Seattle sometimes. Such a beautiful area. Thanks, as always, for sharing your perspective.
Always happy to do so
So pretty! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Michael - Safe sailing in CA!
Music made it unwatchable
Hi Isaac. I am sorry that the music did work for you. some of the new videos feature less and some no music. I appreciate your taking the time for leave the feedback!
Looking forward to more videos like this! Keep em coming!
thanks Bob! That's the plan!
Good to see you back. Your videos are always well put together and very entertaining. They remind me of my time in the pacific NW and make me seriously consider returning!
Thanks Bob - it's beautiful place indeed - rain or no rain.

The sunsets in the strait. Melts my heart
I really enjoyed the video! We have a young daughter and will be moving to Seattle in a few months and would love to have adventures like these. I know you've long since moved on from the Cat 36. Any particular reason why? The sailboat inventory on the PNW is pretty old...I wonder if this one is still in the area. Cheers!
Hi JN. Just seeing this now. Thanks for the comments. The Cat36 is fantastic but I wanted a bit bigger and faster so moved up to a Hunter 40.5 which I kept for 8 years. Then upgraded to. Jenneau 45 for longer distance offshore sailing. The Hunter that you can see on this site is for sale. Let me make if you’re interested now that you are in Seattle. And yes tte Cat36 is still local, saw her a few year ago and had a good chat with the people who bought her.
Hi how is your boat going ?
Boat is doing fantastic, and is for sale!
$38.00 @say $4.00 Marina pricing= 6.5 gals 250 miles. Don't think so, but glad you he a good time. Love seeing the boredom leave those sweet young faces when their outside for a week or 2.
OMG I love this. Awesome video. Assuming you are using a drone? Excellent footage. Hey, who cares about fast? Well ok, some people do. But dang if you are caught in a gale, you WANT one of those heavy slow boats... hell I wouldn't cross the straits without one, I don't care how good the weather is!
Why the acid rock music? Why not just the wind and wave sound??
Thanks for the feedback Jim. Always thought of going musicless and min editing for some. So might just do that along side in the future.
Agree..would like an option for either but probably at my age would prefer the wind and sounds of the boat
Great video - great safety equipment - but I got to tell you even with radar no place to be at night.
GodSpeed Baby OLD but can do It
We love watching video on our old home waters. Home port was Sidney BC. I was directly beside the customs dock for 2 years prior to starting my circumnavigation. Currently in New Zealand Off the Starboard Hull is my CZcams channel Cheers and thanks for the upload
Great to hear from down under. Might meet you there someday!! Thanks for the comment. Cool channel and nice cat.
Good video. Boy that your head sail is small. I remember doing a southern straits in my sailboat Lunch Box is 50 knots with gust to 60. But now I'm just go sailing on Nordic Sun II.
See out there, we may do Southern Straits this year!
17:10 Look at that wake! :) :)

Off to college now... in sunny weather
Great camera angles, sailors! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Super cool. I think they should charge a tariff on fun once you exceed a certain level. :-)
Totally awesome!!
True!
your videos just keep getting better, I loved it..
ushillbillies thank you! Very happy you loved it.
Yee ha!!!
Génial! Terrific filming of a great adventure. I sure hope that some day I get to sail Juan de Fuca. Looks fantastic. That was a great gybe of the spi near the end. I'm never brave enough to do that. I just drop the chaussette, and hoist again on the other side. Your film has persuaded me to try the gybe again. Again, bravo to all aboard.
Thanks Patrick. Great that the video conceived all the fun we had. The strait is fun but small compared to some of your passages. Loved the Scotland adventure. Btw. Look us up if you come to the Pacific Northwest and let’s go for a sail. And gybing is relatively easy with a bit of practice and a good crew. Solo tho, it’s another story...
ALWAYS ENJOY YOUR VideoS ,ONE DAY wE WILL MEET !!
Thank you!
I came across your channel about four years ago and I've always enjoyed your videos... Whenever I see a new one from you it's like finding an unexpected present under the Christmas tree! Looks like you had a great race and a great time! Thanks for posting!!!
Hi Bob. Thank you for those words. They are inspiration to make our videos. We'll have more coming soon! Have a fantastic summer! - frederick
This makes me rethink every race start I have had in little Kailua Kona, Hawaii.....
But it’s Kailua Kona .... I am fan ;)
Now this looks fun!
Nothing is better in snowy day to sit by the fire and watch this FANTASTIC video, the idea of the map was a great one. thank you for sharing and may the wind always be with your sail
thanks so much for watching and the comment! Stay warm!
great video. It brought back memories of 2016 Swiftsure for me. :)
Thank you Andie. Glad you liked it. Hope you're getting on the water for this year's edition.
Beautiful. It is interesting the way the camera interprets the dark areas. Kind of a cool effect.
