To anyone who is criticising the newer developments in the area, just know that before they were built, the land was most likely abandoned shipyards or derelict brewery’s. As someone form the wider Newcastle area, these new developments are only a positive for the city as they help to revitalise derelict industrial buildings

It's absolutely depressing to see those glass and steel high rises polluting glorious British cities. One day you'll wake up in a dreadful hybrid of Hong Kong and Dubai. Obnoxious.

someone who lives in the wider Newcastle area, I can confidently say that the majority of peoples opinions towards newer buildings such as Hadrian’s tower is very positive as it helps to develop the city. Previously to the tower, there was just wasteland so it’s a big improvement

If it was accessable it would be a bonus. Retail don't want to go to a no go area. They should have looked after and nurtured what they had got instead of wasting money on opposition around the city. It's typical of decisions made by people who have no business accumen.

Enjoyed watching your video. A good review of tower blocks in Newcastle, both those that were built and those that are long gone. You did mention that you are not keen on the exterior of Cale Cross House. The new exterior is the third time that the exterior has changed. The original exterior was black panelling! Fitted in with the soot covered buildings of the time but not after those buildings were cleaned up!

Councils should take note that most people don't want to live in a tower block. Housing should be human sized. Also as more offices allow remote working and digital storage of files, there isn't the need for huge offices. How about they build elegant buildings that compliment the surrounding buildings and not stick out like sore thumbs.

  • @MidtownSkyport

There is a small model of the city centre just inside Newcastle Uni's King's Gate building on Barras Bridge, opposite the Civic Centre. It's squeezed under the though, stairs so it's easy to miss. There used to be a small cast bronze model on the pavement opposite the station but I don't know where that is now.

I can remember being sent to the button factory and collecting the daily newspapers from the little newsagents on the corner of Westmoreland Road near the Marlborough cafe.

I've actually worked in the cale cross building and it's almost as troubled as when it was first built the internal refurbishment is taking months over schedule and has already changed hands back in december when the main management company ran out of funds and in general the management of work inside is in shambles the workers have a very negative look on the work and how management is handling it especially considering the fact that alot of the plasterboard panels for the walls is carried manually up the stairs which has caused a few accidents and lots of fatigue when the service elevator which is fully working and able to carry materials up and down is prohibited for some arbitrary reason

I grew up in Elswick and later lived in Summerhill Square which, I heard, was only spared demolition because Jane Gifford and her friends started a housing co-operative there, though @craigix rightly mentions local architect Richard in a comment below. One of our family friends was Joyce, who grew up in Scotswood road. She used to feed me Sunday dinner. Later she moved into one of those tower blocks. The open waste-bin by the lift had a sign saying, "In case of nuclear war take shelter in this bin - nothing ever hits it." When I was a lad there was massive unemployment and alchoholism all around. My dad, stone deaf, had grown up in Elswick and smoked 40 cigarettes a day, which the doctors at the time considered perfectly healthy. He'd bought his house when the whole west end was prosperous. My Dutch immigrant mother set up a day centre in Noble Street for early years children and their parents. I used to visit her work sometimes.

What about the role of Town Planning stull suffering from the 1970's roads policy with a modern rapid transit system on viaducts to match London, e.g., the Docklands Light Railway.

I always wondered, how much would it have cost to refurbish the old houses. To my mind, perfect starter homes within a ready made community. Stripped back to bricks and roof, surely modern plumbing, electrics, insulation and windows would have cost less than those awful towers. I lived in three different terrace houses in different parts of the city, loved working on them as they had good bones…

Lived there for 20 years, from the end of the 1960s and saw many imposing buildings destroyed, not just old Eldon Square, but the Y.M.C.A and an exhibition hall in the Bigg Market. However, the disruption during the construction of the Metro system was well worth it and the city seemed to be really on the way up. Have not been back in recent years and fear that disappointment could await me.
