Here's one thing you may have overlooked: the pulling power of the 1656. Tis train weighs a ton compared to Lionel MPC and 1980's train engines. Used a 1656 and it could pull 20 cars behind it. The diesel trains made 25-30 years after this 1656 steamer, would have the engine either stall, spin the wheels on the rubber, or derail on curves due to the heavy rolling stock load of 20 cars. Even a dinged-up 1656 beats a GP-9 or F-7 from 1982 in pulling traction. PS: might I ask the ballpark purchase price of a 1656 & tender in this good of condition?

6x4 basic layouts with scenary and a lot of detail are still as impressive as larger layouts. Especially if you have some operations going, it never makes the layout boring or stale

Railroad cross

#101 painted in the maroon and gold paint scheme. That brings back memories.

I must say that this is the smoothest running railroad (engines) I've ever seen.

Anyone who has negotiated the deep waters of college life understands fully what you are saying. Trains are hobby. College provides you with credentials that propel you, hopefully, into your career, etc. Hit the books. Trains will wait until school is complete.

Tubular is better if you're a kid (or even adult) and you lay your track on your bedroom floor and take it up and set it down again and again because it's rugged and reliable and those heavy duty pins give a good electrical connection. FasTrak is better if you're building a permanent layout that won't be taken up and reconnected again and again. As long as it isn't pulled apart and reconnected again and again, it's perfectly reliable. But it's not meant to be used by a kid (or an adult) who sets up his layout on the floor and taken up all the time. Just my opinion :-)

Most sets came with just that same amount of track as well. The 0-27 size was great competition with the HO and S gauge market since it could be set up in a smaller space.

Many of my Lionel trains have Magnatraction. Magnatraction will not work on Fastrack. I had a small loop of Fastrack because it would protect my carpet from any oil from my trains run around the Christmas tree. After 5 years I started having problems with it, so I tossed it.
