How does the NBA Draft work?
#nba
Welcome back to the show today. We are diving into the intricate workings of the NBA draft. At a high level, the concept seems straightforward: teams pick the players they want who have declared for the draft. This process repeats for the second round. However, if you tuned in to Wednesday's draft with only that information, you might find yourself wondering what’s really going on. Questions like "Why do the Atlanta Hawks have the number one pick?" or "Why do the Knicks have both the 24th and 25th picks?" or "Why don’t the Nets get a pick this year?" could arise. The answers lie in the nuanced mechanisms that govern the draft, which we will unravel today.
The NBA draft lottery decides the order of the first 14 picks of the draft. Historically, the draft order was based strictly on team records: the worst team received the first pick, and the best team received the last pick. This system was altered in 1985 to prevent excessive tanking. Imagine if the worst team automatically got the first pick today; teams would go to extreme lengths to secure a talent like Victor Wembanyama, potentially even scoring on their own basket.
To counteract this, the draft lottery was introduced, giving the worst teams better odds of landing high picks without guaranteeing them. Initially, the lottery involved the commissioner drawing envelopes with team names from a glass jar, a process criticized for potential tampering. The infamous "Ewing theory" suggests the Knicks' envelope was frozen to ensure they received the first pick in 1985, a theory even Shaquille O’Neal mentioned on the Knuckleheads podcast.
To address these concerns, the NBA switched to a ping-pong ball system. Each team gets a set of combinations, with worse teams having more combinations. A select group of representatives from each team watches the balls being drawn to ensure transparency.
Only the 14 teams that miss the playoffs participate in the lottery, making their picks "lottery picks." The playoff teams pick 15-30 in order of their regular season record. For instance, the Miami Heat get the 15th pick as the worst playoff team, while the Boston Celtics get the 30th pick as the team with the best record.
The lottery odds are structured to give the three worst teams each a 14 percent chance of landing the first pick, decreasing from there. This structure led to the surprising scenario where the Atlanta Hawks, with only a three percent chance, secured the first pick this year. Conversely, despite the Detroit Pistons having the worst record, they ended up with the fifth pick, much to their disappointment.
The second round of the draft follows a straightforward record-based order. The worst team gets the first pick of the second round, and the best team gets the last pick. However, teams frequently trade their picks, complicating this seemingly simple order. For instance, the Raptors hold the Pistons' second-round pick, and the Mavericks have Boston's.
The second round lacks a lottery system because picks beyond the 15th are generally seen as less significant. After the first round, talent evaluations become more subjective, and many second-round picks never play in the NBA. Exploring past drafts on Wikipedia reveals many players, even some first-rounders, never played a single NBA game.
Teams can trade their picks, which explains why the Nets don't have a first-round pick this year and the Knicks have two. The Nets traded away their picks in deals for players like James Harden, sacrificing future talent for immediate impact. For instance, the Nets’ 2022 first-round pick, which became Tari Eason, was part of the Harden trade.
Conversely, the Knicks acquired additional picks through trades like the Kristaps Porzingis deal with Dallas, giving them the 24th and 25th picks this year. On draft night, teams can also trade up or down, often negotiating in real-time as their desired players become available.
Higher draft positions come with higher salaries, incentivizing players to be drafted as early as possible. For example, last year’s first pick, Victor Wembanyama, made $10 million, while the 30th pick, Kobe Brown, earned only $2 million. This financial disparity explains why players look increasingly disappointed as they slip further down the draft order.
Teams can also lose draft picks as punishment for violations, such as tampering with free agency. This year, both the Suns and the Sixers lost second-round picks for premature free agency discussions. While these penalties might seem minor, they reflect the NBA’s commitment to maintaining fair play.

You also have young teams like the pacers and the magic that don’t have “big” stars but have so much great potential. But is the west really better? Can you explain bird rights and restricted free agents. And like player deal and team deal? Also love your videos!
