Why did we Abandon 4:3? | Nostalgia Nerd
Check out sponsor AMD Ryzen Pro Processors for laptop PCs ryzen.pro/en/laptop/ ~ Aspect ratios! It's important. The world seemed to shift dramatically from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect, but the question I often ask is why? Why did we all do that? Like a bunch of zombies walking brainlessly towards the goal. It's kinda wrapped up in the swap from CRT screens to flat panel, but it's a little more intricate than that. So, let's investigate.

    My 48k story:November 1983 my dad came to me 9 yrs old & my brother 6 & said:: “Boys you can have the usual loads of Christmas presents this year, board games, figures ect or you can have one thing between you, on this you will be able to play 100’s of games for years.. we looked at each other & said 100’s of games. That Christmas we opened brand new technology, Sinclair zx spectrum 48k, a interface, joystick, tape player, the horis games & a few others , two books & a catalog that came every month with new games allowing us to choose 2 new games a month for a year. It was the best decision we ever made. Years of family & individual fun 🤩 what I understand now is my dads hard sell, he was 28 at the time & was a tech buff. He played that thing while we slept at night hahaha !! American football manager was an early favourite of his. Jet set Willy, Bruce Lee, saboteur, jet pac, spy hunter spawn of evil, paper boy & outrun with the music on a tape were a few of ours

    I used to have a 24" 16:10 monitor, it was a slight downgrade to go to a 27" 1080 monitor. It's understandable WHY the PC industry went with 6:9 costs, and it helped people move up from 1024x768 or 800x600. Going with a 1440p monitor pretty much solves the loss of pixels. It's still bothersome with notebooks also having lots of empty space because of the 16:9. BUT 16:10 is making a comeback with some companies. Current ThinkPads upgraded from 15.7 displays to 16" which have 1920x1200 or 2560x1600 display modes! (14" and 16" displays for T and P series, and likely the rest too)

    It's annoying for computers that laptop vendors got away with branding screens as "widescreen" which had less area than the corresponding 4:3. They should properly be called "shortscreen". 16:9 is especially poor for computers when even more space is used for the taskbar, titlebar and menu.

    4:3 was not that great - it was a limitation of the CRT regarding how much skew the plates could deliver. Its an odd manipulation presenting a "straight" line on a parabolic surface.

  • @glenncurry3041
    @glenncurry3041 Před 21 hodinou

    While this seems well detailed as to how film developed, it misses video quite a bit. "TV" started with round spinning discs. Many CRTs were square but only a reduced area was displayed to reduce visible distortion. Called the "safe viewing area" as market in video camera displays for framing. Along with even smaller "safe titling area" to assure any title would be visible in the highly reduced viewing areas. 3x4x5 developed out of the math between vertical and horizontal scan frequencies. It was more the development of VTRs, e.g. VHS being able to show a movie at home. Originally the widescreen film was "pan and scan" to the reduced TV ratio. Then and CRTs got bigger, "letter boxed" by giving full movie width and ignoring the black spaces above and below. And for the record, the Sony HDM-3830 was not 1080p. 1080p did not exist at that time. It was 525 scan lines not 540. It's corner resolution was only 950 lines (think pixels) far less than 1080's 1920 pixels.

    The original film aspect ratio was actually 1.37:1, not perfect 4:3. It was standardized by the Motion Picture Academy, and was thus known as the Academy Ratio. You missed the point that the entire reason televisions were made in this ratio is because that's what movies used. (Technically the silent films did use 4:3, but the addition of sound meant the audio track had to go somewhere and that's when the first actual standard aspect ratio was decided at 1.37:1 with audio) As for widescreen - there's another obvious factor you didn't mention - you can easily increase the width, but most cinemas were already projecting the movies up to the ceiling, so you can't increase the height any. That's why widescreen happened, otherwise we may have ended up with vertical videos back in the 1950s. Notice how IMAX was still 1.43:1 and still is at the OG theaters - because they have a massively high ceiling too. They only adopted a 1.9:1 aspect ratio for newer IMAX licensed theaters out of necessity where the ceilings were already built. But yes, 16:9 was chosen because it's the average of 4:3 and 2.35:1. That's all there is to it. Infuriatingly, HDTV manufacturers assumed people would hate black bars so they set the TV to stretch 4:3 images. I saw it everywhere, and still do sometimes. Makes me want to scream... put the black bars on!

    • @gamecubeplayer
      @gamecubeplayer Před dnem

      the problem was that analog video signals (composite, s-video, component & rgb) don't have a horizontal resolution so a tv can't tell if they're 4:3 or 16:9

    • @drfsupercenter
      @drfsupercenter Před dnem

      Correct, but I'm talking about the coax inputs too. Nobody did widescreen TV over analog, so they should have just assumed those channels were 4:3... same with the composite inputs tbh, unless you specifically set your game console to widescreen mode it won't be - and even then, only a small percent of games supported it prior to the Xbox 360/PS3 generation which can all use HDMI

    • @gamecubeplayer
      @gamecubeplayer Před dnem

      @@drfsupercenter2 things: 1. there were formats like palplus that squished a 16:9 picture to a standard analog tv broadcast so that it could be stretched back to normal by a 16:9 receiver 2. the original xbox 360 model didn't have hdmi & the wii only came with composite cables

    • @drfsupercenter
      @drfsupercenter Před dnem

      @@gamecubeplayer OK, fine at your first point, but I live in the USA and am talking about TVs sold here. The result is every public place you went to from like 2009 through even a couple years ago was showing SD TV footage (because they're too cheap to pay for HD satellite/cable) stretched out to 16:9 and it looked terrible. I literally contemplated bringing a universal remote around and fixing it for every place I saw. As for the Xbox 360, that's a fair point, when I got mine it had the HDMI port in it, I think they added it within a year?

  • @fuzzywzhe
    @fuzzywzhe Před dnem

    I can tell you why, the real reason, if anybody wants to know. It was to sell more televisions, nothing else. Companies knew if the aspect ratio was going to be changed, everybody would have to buy a new television, and not just a converter box eventually. Aspect ratio was picked to conform to most films. 4:3 was the aspect ratio of films at one point too, 1950's quite often.
