Finally! Fully Blooming California Native Plant Garden in Mid-April 2024 in Central California
This is just a quick video update on my California native plant garden in the Central Sierra Nevada foothills. This is part of a monthly update series for my garden which I initially planted in December of 2022, and added several more plants in Summer 2023 and fall/winter 2023-2024. We've been waiting and waiting for a major bloom show and it is finally here!
This video was filmed April 21, 2024 and yes I am posting it a bit late as we're already well on our way to summer now, but these blossoms were just too awesome for me not to share.
Plants blooming in this video - apologies, I don't have much time to type up the scientific names so I'm just going to wing it:
- Penstemon Pseudospectabilis / Desert Penstemon
- Hummingbird Sage
- Eleanor Monkeyflower
- Allen Chickering Sage
- Pozo Blue Sage
- Gracias Sage
- Starlight Sage
- Santa Rosa Island Sage (Brandegee's Sage)
- California Poppy
- Dara's Choice Sage (kind of)
- Penstemon Eatonii / Firecracker Penstemon
- Desert Bluebells
- Fiddleneck
- Popcorn Flower
- Bird's Eye Gilia
- Phacelia
- Bristly Jewelflower

March 2024 Update - California Native Plant Garden in the Central Sierra Nevada Foothills
zhlédnutí 161Před 3 měsíci
What does a California Native Plant garden look like in March? Which sages bloom in early spring? What happens if you don't control the weeds in your garden? I don't have all of the answers, but I hope this video series helps folks who are gardening with California native plants in the Central Sierra Nevada foothills, or really anywhere in California with exceptionally wet winters and exception...

Interesting video to learn some new plants. Good luck
More Hummingbird Sage !!! And CA Lilac!
Plant more of that red penstimon !!!!! Wow, beautiful !!!!! Great garden. I’m in FL. It’s always nice to see native gardens from all over the world.
That's so cool. Thank you for teaching me something! I too have an affinity for these kinds of flowers- in particular the weeds that have tiny "blooms" that look like daisies!
Did you just throw seed on top of the mulch?
For the poppies I did, focusing around the drip line so that if I wanted to I could irrigate any that germinated.
Love it
Hey there, this is a beautiful garden! I've been using your videos to cross reference how my garden is doing further down in the Valley. Just a heads up about the Sweet Alyssum, it's a mediterranean native that's actually becoming somewhat invasive because it keeps getting added to California wildflower seed packets. Same with bachelor's buttons. Happy gardening!
Bummer! That’s obnoxious. I’ve had family buy me wildflower mixes thinking “wild” means “native” - thought I’d been selective about what I’d actually opened but I guess not selective enough…
Blue dick and fiddleneck can you buy that in seed.
Loved your native plants. Good luck. I trying to add natives to our garden. Thxs
Buckeye is a slow grower compared to the elderberry.
that starlight sage really is amazing. Does common yarrow have a scent? I get the feeling var. occidentalis is the one that smells strong
It’s totally amazing. Highly recommend. Not sure on the yarrow- but it’s about to bloom so I’ll let you know!
do you just throw the seeds on top of the mulch?
I do!
Lovely! I especially enjoyed the Feline hamicus.
You can’t find them in shops but if one pops up in your yard it’s a great volunteer :)
Beautiful garden. Thank you for sharing.
Good luck to your native garden!
Thanks!
Funny how every garden has its nemesis. Yours is deer, mine - snails
Deer and gophers! Some light aphid action too. What sort of climate are you in?
Mr. Ham stanning Fiddleneck is everything
He’s definitely a fanboy.
Hi. I live in the San Gabriel Valley and although you have different challenges with native plants, I really enjoy listening to you. Thank you for the tips and updates!
Glad you find it interesting!
Can’t wait for your native plants to bloom! Love your wildflower short videos.
Thank you! They’re blooming now (finally!)
Are you sure the red ants are not native? Try getting a closer look
You might be right! Your comment made me do a bit of research- I didn’t know there were native red species. Consider me noticed!
Yes of course, I keep and "study" ants so if you get photos of them I could help identify them
I love your vids
Those are beautiful.
Looking forward to seeing how the plants do this year.
That tridentata is gorgeous. Wish I could have one but it would perish in my constantly damp riparian clay soil. I'll stick to douglasiana for now :)
I’m jealous of your riparian soil! Hug an Aspen for me.
@@LetHimEatCake yup there's tons of populus fremontii here. Will do ❤️
I have deer in my garden too (Berkeley). I'm trying some of the spray that is harmless but smells bad to discourage deer. I planted some tar weed (Madia elegans). I didn't know they discourage deer. Thanks for the tip. The deer seem to leave the "deer resistant" plants alone until the flowers bloom. Then ... chomp ... chomp... bye bye. :) Thanks for sharing the videos.
Yeah that’s definitely the case for some of the plants I’ve got like the buckwheat in particular. But they do leave all my native sages along and last year they didn’t touch my penstemon so there is hope in some places! I keep saying ok that’s it I’m only planting sages and penstemon from now on. Then I go to the nursery and come home with a deer salad! It’s a disease.
That deergrass mulch tho!
There years worth!
Coarsegold? Nice!! Those foothill are so special
Yes they are! Very unique growing environment too.
Yes, Hollywood is mistakenly named for Toyon. The berries are edible.
Good to know- Hopefully mine get big enough to produce someday!
Goodluck with the Salvia apiana and other Southern California natives. You guys get a lot more rain than theyre comfortable with. I would look into California Junipers, hibiscus lasiocarpos var. occidentalis, Northern Arctostaphylos species, and Corylus Cornuta, are good ones that would really thrive in ur garden
Thank you for the tips! I’ll look for those
Which manzanita do you have
I have a first year Monica Manzanita and a second year Howard Mcminn or Dr Hardin can never remember which.
I’ve never worried about the pruning of my sage😀 when ever it needs cleaning up I butcher them way back and they always forgive me
Good to know! This was the first time I hacked into it. Guessing I didn’t go far enough!
The Artemisia could be 'Powis Castle'
Excellent thank you for the ID!
Thank you for sharing
Nice haul, new here, what growing zone are you in? Very nice scenery.
9a but I think it behaves more like 9b- I’ve almost never seen it below 30. Would have said it’s really dry in the summer but looking at the project you’re taking on that might be an inconsiderate statement!
@@LetHimEatCake ,yeah pretty dry here, but we are finally forecasted to get some rain. Looking forward to seeing your progress.
I am looking forward to your updates! I am new to native plants and I just started planting them. I am in So Cal. Good luck on your plants and I hope the deer stay away!
I wish you luck with yours as well- Thanks for stopping by!
👍👍Fantastic native garden. Bermuda can be a real pest.
Looks great! You have lots of land to work with. I could see a nice bird bath or fountain to attract birds.
What’s your Sunset zone? Beautiful plants :)
Thank you very much! We are in zone 9a very close to 9b in the central Sierra foothills.
