Making My Husband a Pirate: Stash Busting Renaissance Faire Costume

Hello friends, It's Ren Faire season, so I'm back with a costuming video, but for my husband. This year, I'm piecing my costume together from things I already have, but his I'm making by digging into my fabric stash. The shirt pattern is the Breeze, mens/straight fit from Twig and Tale. Making a Shirring-Effect Summer Dress without Elastic Thread

Looking for the Perfect Pear-Shaped Pants: Part 1, Fernway Culottes and Arenite Pants

If you have a very curvy body shape, you probably struggle with a lot of off-the-rack clothes. I'm very pear-shaped, so my hips are much bigger than my waist and to be honest, I'm really disappointed by brands' "curve" fit lines having only up to 10 inches of difference between waist and hips. Haha, well I source from a lot of places. I love to use bedding (and sometimes curtains) sourced from the thrift store and IKEA as-is, small local fiber shops, and the silk for the vest I found at a random booth at an outdoor market. Sometimes I order online as well, especially my linen fabrics. I wish the best in getting through your WIPs!

This gore adjustement is very clever, I too would not wear the only bows version and do not add clothes in my wardrobe that don't see myself wearing regularly (but I don't care if it's costumey for others 😅). Also love love the wiliam morris fabric, I've been wanting for a while a printed fabric that would have a medieval feel to it to make the lining with a peek of a huge hood and that might be just the one I need ^^

Now I know a few things about how to sew, enough for such a project, and I've found the perfect fabric thanks to you: definitely will order some and do that very soon 😀

It looks amazing with the gores! Makes the black bows pop even more. I used to have a skirt that worked pretty much like this: two flat panels for front and back, and then very ample pleated gores on the sides, with the panels held together by side lacing. It was a staple of my wardrobe for years and years. Definitely recommend this kind of garment.

The coolest thing in the world is to not care about being cool lol A lot of historical styles look amazing on thicker bodies because they are designed to create a silhouette rather than just trying to make you disappear as much as possible. Lovely silk 😍 a few years ago i made a dress out of saree silk, flatlined the bodice pieces + interfaced the edges of my tiers with regular cotton so it's sturdier. Thank you for the tea staining link -- I've always just assumed it was an imperfect process with inevitably unruly results 😅 I would add maybe some kind of wristwear for him maybe -- could be something cloth that could be soaked in water for hot renfaire weather. Also maybe some head wear -- a hat, kerchief or bandana. If he wears jewelry, that could be a good addition or if he doesn't, maybe there's some metallic embellishments on his accessories?

I like the dresss, looks comfortable 😻 the changes you made at the end improved the fit and yes definitely less frumpy. interesting shirring technique, I think I will try it. I have two grandchildren I can try it out on first 😊 Have you thought about putting a couple large folding tables together for a cutting/sewing table. Have one set up and pull the other out when you need a bigger surface, if you have the room of corse. I have my grandfathers old office desk. It’s not quite big enough for my large cutting mat 58x25in so I put a small extension on the back and I have two square sewing machine cabinets positioned on the end. It works 🤷🏼‍♀️ Idea for an ironing surface. I picked up an old dresser years ago. The drawers were missing but it was sturdy so I put it in the back of the truck🤭 it is waist high and a bit over four feet long. Cleaned and painted it, a friend cut boards for shelves inside. I padded the top and stapled a cover on it and it works wonderfully as a large ironing board and storage. We used leftover paint and wood scraps so the only cost was the padding. Just some ideas.

Also the bit where you talked about how your brain sees it coming together really encouraged me for when I struggle with Patterns. But when you talked about needing a simple win after making a big mistake and not knowing how to fix the mistake you made almost makes me cry, then. It spoke to me in my current life situation and It speakes to my heart about so much more than just sewing. My life is so messy rn and this is how I feel about sewing, it's easy and I can do it and I need a simple win everyday of sewing just a little. At first it felt like I was wasting my time. I should be cleaning or folding laundry or cooking but then I realized how much it soothes my soul.
