The idea of Rocky Broad Solar developed as I was living along the banks of the Rocky Broad River in the mountains of western North Carolina. The end goal is to take the many years of industry knowledge and use it to empower others to make the change to clean, renewable energy in a way that provides security and self sufficiency to homeowners. It is time to take the power back into our hands, and make the current flow.

Sol-Ark 15K versus EG4 18KPV - Who Wins?
zhlédnutí 20KPřed 5 měsíci
CORRECTIONS Sol-Ark has 3 different datasheets for the same inverter, one stating 17,000 max PV input, one that shows a max 19,000 watt PV input, and another that states 19,500 watt max PV input. The datasheets were updated the inverter kept gaining additional PV input capacity, so the video is not a fair comparison in terms of max PV input. www.sol-ark.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/15K_Specs_...

If there’s one thing I can’t stand more than anything else 😂 With a white board behind you😂😂😂😂😂 Can’t make that shit up😂
Had my Powerwall 3 for a week now. Quite happy so far
This guy in pajamas forgot to clean up and us not an authority on the subject.
Great info thank you
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.. .. Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste 🙏🏻 😊 ✌ ☮ ❤
In NJ for install 4 5p batteries companies want 38.5k $ this insane. 2 tesla powerwall 3 cost 22k $. Same chemistry, more capacity and more output. One thing is different tesla powerwall 3 can not be charged from generator.
A great video, thanks for taking the time to put all of these new features and capabilities of the Powerwall 3 on a video. Perhaps the single biggest and in my view most important, features is that huge peak power capability. I live in the desert and have two AC units. For everyone else's inverters operating in backup mode, something has to be done to prevent the inverter from shutting down and going off line if both AC compressors start up at the same time, particularly if the OAT is over 100 degrees! I also have couple of quick comments / questions. On the mid circuit interrupters, in round numbers solar panels put out around 50 volts around midday, two in series output lethal voltage, so wouldn't the mid circuit interrupters need to be placed on each panel, not on every two or three? At least according to the Fire Dept. where I live there shouldn't be any lethal voltages when the system is in rapid shut down. You also said that you would have to buy enough Powerwall 3 units to power the whole home during backup. Doesn't it have any sort of load management / load shed capability? It seems that a good portion of the competing manufacturers either have automatic load management or are working on it. I would like to see another video on the Tesla App and in particular how it interacts with the Powerwall 3.
Great Vid ! Gracias Amigo !😁
Really enjoyed a lot of the points you made in this video. Enphase is gaining more and more popularity depending on what the individual's needs are. With the ever changing solar industry, it's not always easy to keep up with new trends and equipment. Very educational piece. Keep it up!!
I appreciate the kind words @MatthewYBarbo, thanks so much for watching the channel!
How am I getting a Gateway 3 installed with my PW3 ? I have an existing system with a SolarEdge inverter and optimizers. They tell me it can be AC coupled?
I have 4 Enphase 5ps installed. Calling it good for the next 20 years assuming I live that long.
That lithium iron phosphate should keep you squared away. Thanks for watching the channel!
I just looked at Tesla website, if you go to buy a power wall it does not say definitively what power wall version you are buying. Anyone know why?
No idea, but you can always get a quote directly from me. We generally are pretty competitive with the prices that Tesla charges on turn key installations. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thanks. 👍
Glad you liked it! Thank you for watching!
Wow. Talk about major limitations. Not even compatible with there own older systems. Just a way to force you to buy more equipment exclusively from them.
Yes, it is a shame. You can mix the 5P battery with older microinverters, but all micros have to be the same generation and all batteries have to be the same generation. No mixing of microinverters and no mixing of batteries. Thanks for watching!
Can we AC and DC couple at the same time? I think yes. What are issue will occure during the the setup? As DYI Trying to see what benefits for both system intergrated?
Absolutely. Depends on your inverter, but many battery capable inverters do allow you to both AC and DC couple separate PV systems at the same time. This would also give you another level of redundancy in case one of the two systems went down. Thanks for watching!
How about an install on a house that already has solar but no storage? Is there a way to install a PW3 so it charges off excess solar during the day and runs the house in the evening/night, without tying into the current solar system?
Absolutely. The Powerwall 3 recently was approved for "AC coupling" which is exactly what you are talking about. It basically tricks a grid tied only inverter into thinking the grid is operating and uses a CT clamp to monitor the PV output to charge the batteries accordingly.
Very good video. Would be great if you can do more on microinverters such as install steps or components needed like dc/ac disconnect
Absolutely. I plan to do some more hands on videos in the future once the channel is up and running. Most microinverters have a combiner box with circuit breakers that are considered a code compliant AC disconnect per NEC guidelines, but many utilities have their own unique AC disconnect requirements.
wholesale sol-ark cost $5500
Good to know. I just based the price comparison on the standard pricing found online. Thanks for watching the channel!
Nothing new, Tesla is just catching up to the competition.
I hear you. It is a constant race to be in front of the competition. Thanks for watching.
I have been into Solar for Years and I am an EE. Some of these comments are just missing the point completely. This is about safety and what the inspectors want to see. It does not matter if your PV is limited to less than the Amps rating. It does not matter if your batteries are limited. Every Inspector knows that the Amount of Panels may increase and more batteries could be added later. They are only Interested in what is the Maximum the Inverter, Wiring and Panel box can handle when put together. This was a good video but could have been better if the Buzzer sound was eliminated.
I hear you. The buzzer sound was my idea, but I hired someone else to edit it. The buzzer was much more annoying than I imagined. Next time I will try one of those movie "take 2" screens. Thanks for the comment and for watching the channel!
I'm glad Sol-Ark has dropped the made in USA advertising. Also, I've seen too many vids of the Sol-Ark inverter being underpowered. I do like Will Prowse (sp) recent video of the EG4 12k showing the inverter able to start 4 compressors and a car lift without tripping the inverter. I'd love to see if the Sol-Ark 15k can do that. Also, pricing is a huge deal. Lastly, the ferrite filters they add to the panels as an EMP protectant I would have a hard time relying on. I would go with EMP Shield's products, it's much less expensive that paying to EMP hardening the Sol-Ark inverter and you can get all the proper protection for less cost, ie protection from the grid, the solar array and the battery.
All great points. Sometime in the future I hope to be conducting more hands on videos with actual equipment, but it doesn't come cheap. Thanks for watching!
I’m pretty sure Tesla has had a meterbase mounted Backup Switch for 2-3 years already. Is this Backup Switch you’re describing different from that one?
Nope. I have been a certified Tesla installer for the past 10 years and the Backup Switch just hit the market this year. There are other meter collar adapters out there, but not a Tesla branded one. ConnectDER is a common one. Also some utilities offer them as a form of interconnecting to their grid. Thanks for watching!
your talking solar not the inverter that is doing the dc to ac
That is correct. I am talking the ratio of the DC solar panel array compared to the AC size of the solar inverter. Thanks for watching!
Do you have a source for the 20,400 watt peak for the 18kpv, I can't find a source for that and having an official source for that would make permits much easier for a project I'm working on.
• 0 seconds ago Hi @Glennmcgurrin8397. I received this information via email response when reaching out to EG4 tech support before I created my initial video. I was also not able to find it on the datasheet, which was concerning. Every other inverter manufacturer that I am aware of lists the peak output power in 10 sec intervals on the datasheet other than EG4.
Where do you get that 10 second power number for the 18kpv? I've been unsuccessfully looking for an official source for a peak output as part of dealing with some compliance issues if I want my ac on it as I'd need the peak output to be above the lcked rotor amps of my ac. If there's an official source for that 20,400 number it will save me a lot of work.

That is correct. That seems to be the way of the world these days. Thanks for watching!
when the dc expansion packs come out, is it possible to add just that to enphase panel system ? or do we need the pw3 and the dc pack can only be added to an existing pw3 ?
The DC expansion units can only be paired with a PW3 battery. Thanks for watching!
Informative Solaredge Ecosystem. Nice work!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!
17:00 The Tesla backup switch, eliminates relocating loads to a Backup Load Center. If there’s not enough space in the main panel for the PW3 breaker a generation load center might be needed. 20:05 The PW3 can work with a Generac backup. Main panel, Gateway, Generac breaker in Gateway, then Generac relay, then Backup Load Center.
Absolutely. In that configuration the generator would not be capable of charing the battery though. It would be first line of defense(solar/batteries) and second line of defense(generator). In my opinion, if you have a fossil fuel powered generator, it is usually best to pair it with a system that can integrate the two power sources all into one system, but that is just a personal opinion. Thanks for watching!
MAJOR PLUS for EG4 is that in can be installed right on top of the cable trough, because it does not have a requirement for any space at the bottom like the 6" for the Ark-Sol.
Good call out. I always thought the trough could have been made to look a little more sleek, but it sure does make things easy! Thanks for watching!
Unfortunately this data is still incorrect. The max usable PV of the 15k is 18kW (with batteries). Without batteries it's only 15kW like your whiteboard shows. The maximum continuous inverter output without PV is also not a fixed 12kW. The maximum DC discharge rate is 275A and the output is based on that. So lets say the batteries are currently at 52V, after inverter losses it'll be able to output around 13.5kW. The 18kPV has a 250A max battery discharge rate so the maximum inverter output ends up being around 9-10% less than the 15k at a given battery voltage.
Well thanks for the info and for watching the video!
The inverter is the heart of your system, Sol-Ark cost more best is has proven itself in the industrial market and is well made. I had nothing but nightmares with 3 Growatt 5000es and Signature Solar did not help. I used to wake up at night to make sure they didn't kick off and I had to restart them. Now with the Sol-Ark 15K running the while house including a 5 ton heat pump, I have had nothing but peace of mind. The customer support is top notch and they have moved their monitoring servers to the U.S.
I hear you 100%. Having reliable tech support is worth it's weight in gold. Thanks for watching!
Can you discuss how the gen and ac coupling work. When I called signature solar their tech support was both unable to answer the question and then when he tried he got it wrong.
I have a question about the 200 amp bypass for the grid connection for these inverters. With grid on, and the loads are exceeding the inverter output capacity, will the grid assist in powering the loads to prevent an inverter over current shutdown situation? TIA!
Absolutely. With the grid connected, any consumption in the home that is not provided by the solar or batteries will draw from the grid, through that 200A bypass. Only when there is a utility outage or when the home is off-grid will it be limited by the PV/battery output power. Thanks for watching!
@@RockyBroadSolarLLC In fact Sol-Ark is responsible for bringing this internal grid pass through feature to market (which eliminates the need for an AC combiner panel). Per their head of Americas, Luxpower is a Chinese R+D company (not a manufacturer). They sure did help themselves to our innovative design but even Tesla is following Sol-Ark into transformerless hybrid inverters. Regardless, Sol-Ark has the most field experience with transformerless hybrids in the USA market, including offgrid.
Hi, great explanation, im about to buy a 6.9kw array on an East facing roof. I have been offered either a 5 or 7kw invertor for the same price. Which one would work better, i live in the UK so not especially a sunny climate. Im also having a 10kw battery if that impacts anything. Many thanks
Tough call. That is a 1.38 DC:AC ratio. You could certainly get away with a 5K inverter, but you will probably experience some clipping in the late morning in the sunniest months of the year. Thanks for watching!
Great comparison. I would also pay attention to amperage. Sol-Ark MPPTs are full sized, not irregular amperage. This means greater design flexibility on the roof and not pushing to the limit for those larger PV arrays. You could call that max PV size conservatively specified as that line item isn't part of the UL certification. The Sol-Ark battery charger is also more powerful, which makes a big difference when wanting to use the inverter at maximum 12kW capacity throughout its life. Finally, there are a few features that might be considered a tie on the whiteboard. The winner of the tie should be the company that innovated the feature, not the one that copied it.
Thank you for the information and for watching the channel! I am flattered to have you commenting on my videos. I would love to do a deeper dive into more of your products in the future.
Adding 2 PW3 to my existing Enphase PV system. Would not give up my individual panel monitoring. But the PW3 is a lot of bang for the buck. Installed after all credits and utility rebates OTD for $19K. My second PW3 is the Expansion unit. I'll have the best of both worlds.
That is certainly possible now with the Powerwall 3 combined with the Backup Gateway 2 for AC coupling. Thanks for watching!
Gotta tell you that this video is pretty much a waste of time. A bunch of numbers written on a white board. Then a price comparison. Absolutely of no value to a site that wants to set up a battery backed grid tied hybrid system. But you keep click fishing.
Well thanks anyways for the comment. It really helps the algorithm!
@@RockyBroadSolarLLC Well, I gave your video a chance, watched it, determined it was a waste of time with no technical value and chose not to subscribe to your channel. That should be your real concern, you are making poorly crafted videos. Step it up man!
I need some help figuring out my solar needs and what I build myself with an electrician. Thank you
That is not a service I currently offer other than my videos, but thanks so much for watching!
Looks like a great battery and it comes with a 6 string inverter! I was thinking of getting micro inverters for our apartment but if I can save money and still have just the battery and a gateway in the garage then I'm happy. Good to see they have rapid shut downs.
It does save you some cash if you can sacrifice that module level monitoring. Thanks for watching!
Not having Micro-Inverters, is a deal killer for me.
I also feel like losing the module level monitoring/performance manipulation is making a backwards move in technology. Thanks for watching!
Nice overview and thanks for correcting previous info. That's a righteous thing otherwise, bad info piles up.. Hey, so one thing I'm always interested in is where the company is based and also where it's manufactured. I know, I can look it up but I think it's important in a side by side comparison. And besides employing my 'neighbors', it also may have warranty implications. I always prefer to buy American, except for an occasional Honda motorcycle... Thanks for your efforts! N
I am pretty sure that both inverters are manufactured in China, although both Sol-Ark and EG4 are U.S. based companies with R&D/tech support in the United States. Thanks for watching!
Why would different strings need to face the same direction? PW3 has 6MPPT connectors. Wouldn't each string wired to different MPPT's not care which way the other one is faceing?
Correct. As long as all panels on the same string are oriented the same way, you are good to go. You just want to avoid putting opposite oriented modules on the same string. Thanks for watching!
I was deciding last month between these same 2 inverters... I ended up going with EG4... a MAJOR factor was the friendly support from their tech support people, answering questions before the purchase and this continued after as well
Customer service and tech support is a big part of the decision. Thanks for watching!
For the love of all that is good, please put down the pointer! It's really annoying.
Good video, you know your stuff. Please put down the pointer when you talk bro!
Noted! Thank you for watching!
Sol Ark hay a better tech support. EG4 has a terrible tech support. I have experienced this.
Good to know. I appreciate the comment!
True, hopefully they will be around for a long time. They seem to have lots of sales.
We can keep our fingers crossed. Thanks for watching!
Okay , these are the comparisons numbers for now , could change!
The future is uncertain!
How are you protecting electrical workers from backfeed during storm restoration effors?
That is the purpose of a microgrid interconnect device or a transfer switch. It severs the connection to the grid, so that when your secondary power source is sending out power to your home, that it does not send it out to the grid, your neighbors, or unsuspecting utility workers. Thanks for watching!
How much energy (in kilowatt hours) can the power wall 3 actually store?
13.5kWh Thanks for watching!
