If you have watched the film as was well as the extras but haven't read the book, you might of missed this vital verdict in the story. Both Simon and Joe arrive at the same conclusion - a near fatal mistake - and it happened before they even left base camp. See also... watched TTV on tv earlier this evening after watching many years ago, andx interested to know how both men are today. It is a completely minddblowing story. The Universe and the human spirit can achieve anything.
Joe is so raw. Like. Authentic expression. But also i feel so bad for him. Hes obviously going through ptsd being back there. Thats awful
The dangerous thrills of life!!
I don't like the Simon character, mainly not for that what he did, but for the way he deals with it. Burning Joes clothes was damn awful.
If you think about the weight of what happened and the effect that would have on someone's mind I do not find it surprising that he acted in a strange / out of character way. I personally think the whole episode messed up his mind and that it changed him for the rest of his life. Most people in everyday life do not have to deal with life / death situations apart from paramedics and ambulance technicians, who have to deal with so much crap and stay 'normal / professional' it's insane. Strong emotional memories become a part of you, almost a like physical attribute.
It’s an incredible story of bravery and survival. How we I do think the movie almost made it seem like bad luck, and missed an opportunity to emphasize the dangers of going out of your depth and unprepared. Although they’re now in climbing cannon, Joe and Simon were great amateur climbers (certainly better than I’ll ever be) they were not of the caliber that should be first timing routes like this. When I’ve heard real climbers talk about what they should have done, they start by laughing and saying “we’ll they shouldn’t have been there”, before going into the specific issues like tying ropes together for an absail. Also, those mistakes in the past - Simon definitely did the right thing cutting he rope. Even if he had known the situation, they were both gonna die if they stayed in that spot.
" they were not of the caliber that should be first timing routes like this." <- how do you reach this assertion?
It's the best documentary I've watched.
Wow, simon really comes off as a real dick here! Aint nobody "celebrating" you mate. I find genuine survival stories so fascinating. Its remarkable what we are capable of! I feel terrible for Joe's retraumatisation. They really shouldn't have asked these men to recreate this. The entire psychological profile of making this film for both men seemed a hot mess. Poor things. For what its worth regarding cutting the rope - of course it had to be done. I dont think anyone can dispute that. And if anyone does - Joe himself as a climber, understood it.
If Simon hadn’t cut the rope they would both have died. That’s almost certain.
Absolute legend joe what a fighter seriously like a a pride lion in a mans body 1000% of people wouldnt of survived in that situation like he did massive respect to him 👍
This survival saga is beyond what we'd normally regard as plausible. I think few humans would be able to persevere as long as Joe did. 'Tough' doesn't do justice to his tenacity and spirit. Both men showed themselves to be of great character, during and after the ordeal.
They called it "Bomb Alley" not "Death Alley". Jo was actually really struggling emotionally during this although you may not realise it. He talks about it in the newer edition of Touching The Void which I have also read as well as the original. Shame the camera guy was so in their faces with the questions Funny how Simon was bunt about why they came back though.
My Aunt had the pleasure of meeting Simon Yates. I just watched the documentary again and still can't believe it they both made it. Proper English spirit, keep calm and carry on.
I think it does mean a lot to Simon but you can’t expect it to mean the same as it does for Joe. Both men had different experiences there.
Since added an 'Epilogue' post that appears in the revised version of the book.
The guy who left his mate is a real see you next Tuesday
"see you next Tuesday" - what does that mean???
@@cpcnw it's slang for C-U-N-T
Yeah that time is still very fresh in his mind going back there....hes no bring a drama queen or anything like that....if you live through something like what joe went through and survived that fall into that crevasse and making it back on a brken leg to the base camp is so amazing
Film crew / interviewer are a disgrace.
Any muppet who thinks less of Simon is just that. He pulled off the greatest single man rescue of all time lowering Joe down that face knowing he'd still have to get him through the glacier IF he got him down. The overhang at the end was cruel luck but even then he obviously made the right call as even if Joe had died, Simon would have got out and if he hadn't cut it, they both certainly would have died.
Tge whole thing is suspicious? Why didn't Simon get help as soon as he got to the tent? And how comes no evhave lost limbs through frostbite? Not even fingers?
But Joe does seem like a drama queen
I love how unfake they are 😂 its brilliant! "Doing it for money" "hate it here" so unamerican and refreshing. Why should they pretend to be happy in a place that must of tortured there minds for years and changed them forever and not fir the better like people pretend "anything you'd u go through makes you stronger" absolute crap! All the healthy well adjusted people I've met have had nice childhood and lives the ones struggling always have gone through crap! Love the way they dont make out they were glad it happened and found god 😂
Have to remember they weren't even that close or even liked each other so much so the fact sinom even tried to help is brilliant
Its not even something to debate. What he done was 100% correct! If your wife has cancer do you kill yourself to? What would of been the point of staying tied together? There was nothing else to do so why do people debate it?
I would never cut the rope on family, someone i loved or a best friend but just a climbing buddy that you knew wouldn't of even tried to get you down of course you would with no hesitation, im amazed it took his so long, hungry, thirsty, blizzards risk of death and knowing he is going to kill you. Obviously if he new that when he fell they would both miraculously land safe in the crevese you would fall with but no one would expect that and anyway he thought he was dead. Only thing im confused about and makes me suspicious is that they never reported it when he got to Richard and that he never needed medical attention straight away! Why didn't he call for rescue straight away or tell his family? Thats the only strange thing
No mobiles.
Chapeau Joe and Simon. Great book, wonderfull movie. It is a pleasure to recall your books.
Simon is a G
G.... what?
A really interesting documentary about mountaineering fame/infamy and the media’s fascination with things that some people would prefer be forgotten.
So glad I watched this, touching the void changed my life completely, I was overwhelmed emotionally by Joe's experience and by both of their honesty. Joe's will to carry on regardless of his chances of survival was beyond incredible.
truly a life-changing story that sculpts so clearly in the mind just how precious life is and the extent we'd go to defend it and how we take it stupidly for granted.
Give 127hours a watch , better yet the documentary "desperate days in blue john canyon " - remarkable survival!
@wolfe8421 appreciate the recommendation thanks
My respects to you sir. Greetings from Belgium
incredible.
The words you both found provided enough imagination for me that your experiences live in the pictures of my mind all these years later. Well articulated and haunting
Wow, this video includes some of the best advice you can give to any traveler. Don't get injured, if you get injured don't expect that anybody will care or have any sympathy. If you need treatment then you will need to pay up-front and reimburse yourself, by claiming off of your insurance. Don't expect the treatment to be anywhere near the standard you'll get in the West. I didn't even cover the drunk driving, the dangerous driving and the 'don't worry, God will protect us' driving. Happy holidays.
If you never stop fighting, you’re never really dying. You are alive until death. The fear is only useful for keeping terrible things from happening. Once stricken, there’s just the pain and the doing. Mine was in no way compared to this one, but I had a rough descent after a fall myself. Changed my life. 20yrs on, I am just now returning to climb baby mountains and it feels fantastic! 20 years of wisdom has already come in handy last summer. Picked bad summit exit, down-climbed into a trap, and had to hang in space for a few moves. I was able to choke down any panic and get the job done. Whew!
I've nearly died lots of times and survival I was told was a miracle, drug overdoses was what done it to me but both risky life things and both hoping to achieve the same feeling just some people don't have money to climb so take drugs to get the same feeling and survival really does change your life, the gratitude for life is something someone who isn't like us will never understand. I sometimes think Jesus why don't these adrenaline junkies just get some drugs! It's the same result
Such respect for these man. I wish they’d bring a good trauma therapist with them when returning to this mountain. And that they did not bring a film crew before having emotionally worked through the memories.
Brilliant
Thank you for upload
Should have never been a discussion about cutting the rope. 2 options, one logical. No need to think back, but years of unnecessary discussion. That would annoy the hell out of anyone. Also he didn’t have the spotlight for obvious reasons, and he doesn’t care about it. He moved on way faster than anyone else, but everyone just pulls him back to something that wasn;t as significant for him.
Simon is either so egoistic or really doesn’t feel anything? He seems so cold. As if all of this didn’t mean anything to him. Weird.
How old are you mate ? With just a litte life experience you know, that most guys aren´t 100% the way you THINK they are !!! Read his books, he´ s a real humorous one. . . far away from being "cold" - . . just a bit "cool" . . .
@@AL_THOMAS_777 I‘m not a mate but okay. I‘ve come across many interviews with him and according to the interviews, he feels nothing. Let’s assume it was okay to cut Joe off. Even then, you‘d expect him to him somehow upset or sorry or showing happiness that Joe was found, but … nothing. honestly he comes across as a bit of a douche, not Someone I would call cool.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR FOR 6 HOURS. I NEEDED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AT THE POINT THE MOVIE ENDED. I thought it ended far too soon--Joe was in an extremely precarious situation at the point where the movie ended. All I could find online were the same 2 sentences about a 2 hour mule ride and then into a pickup truck. I read another tidbit about the hospital delaying two days because they did not accept his health insurance. This video was everything I was hoping to find to satisfy my curiosity of what happened from the point at which the movie left off when Joe reached the tent on the mountain. ✌️ Edit: I found a video on youtube called 'What happened next' that had interviews with all 3 men explaining exactly what happened after the ending point of the movie. It is precisely what I was hoping to find. ✌️
Check out my 'Epilogue' at the end of this also, which was added to the book 10 years later!
I know exactly how you feel, I’ve been searching for this movie, or this TV show for years I always thought it was part of the series called I shouldn’t be alive, I probably searched their episode list 30 times over the years I just now decided to ask chatGPT what show I might have seen, and it instantly sent me here I’m afraid AI is a double edge sword, it might be our doom, but it sure does amazing things

Simon states that the decision to cut the rope was made as if it had not come from his own mind? In the film Joe talks about a cruel external force pushing him on even though he was in agony? There are some similarities with both of these reflections. It's as though both men were somehow driven by an 'external entity' that was beyond their own experience. A remote temporal viewer telling them what to do? People who have taken DMT have talked about 'conversations with God' and it has been reported that persistent users have met entities that appear friendly and helpful. In extreme conditions such as a near death experience or bad accident the body creates it's own chemicals and many people under life threatening situations have reported having 'Out of Body' experiences whereby they are separate to the physical world but could see themselves in their dire predicament and they where able to communicate with their physical counter part? Evidence is now building that suggests that 'consciousness' does not originate in the brain. It is beyond our understanding of space time. We do not know where it can be 'located' but it is not in any earthly dimension we can measure. In the end we just don't know. But in any case I can recommend the following books 'The Case Against Reality' by Donald Hoffman and 'Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience' by Pim Van Lommel. On the gas situation: This is a constant dilemma. More kit equals more weight which slows you down, which in itself could create a dangerous situation arising. Imagine if they carried a small PMR radios and Richard had a drone to drop them some gas? But this was in 1985 so radio kit was a lot more expensive and heavier and drones weren't available. In my experience when back packing, I have noticed the following with kit items you are deliberating over taking... if you take them you won't need them. If you don't, you will need them! But in my mind the gas cylinders where the equivalent to carrying water. And I know that dehydration is extremely dangerous as it leads to electrolyte depletion, and that can make you seriously ill or at worse kill you. Remember the SAS guys on Brecon Beacons? Extreme training during the hottest part of the year, they let themselves get dehydrated but were not worried because they still had water. But it was too late. They got ill. And some of them died.
See Earnest Shackleton , Capt Scott , and Edmond Hillary all talking about the " third man."
All fun and games until you get an injury then you are in big trouble ❤
May be, but . . . "Just l i v e dangerous - and wild " (Osho)
Joe is very handsome ❤
It’s a shame that the trip ended up being an unhealthy experience for Joe. He was pressured into going, and he never felt comfortable for a single moment. I really wish the filmmakers hadn’t pushed that on him.
I just wonder why the two of them seem to have fairly bad blood towards one another now. Something must have happened as I don’t think you’d speak about each other the way Simon does about Joe if you had just ‘grown apart’
Both men did what they had to do to survive. Simon cutting the rope doesn’t disturb me, but his callous disregard for what Joe went through greatly disturbs me.
Probably because you don't understand what he actually went through. If no one had criticised him for cutting the rope it's highly unlikely he would react the same way he does. To have at and since 21 years of age and for over 15 years gotten criticism for the only choice he had in a situation most people can't understand that ended up with saving both their lives is extremely hard to live with. To be as emotionless and cold and distancing yourself is a way of trying to cope. Joe wouldn't even be alive at all if it wasn't for the decisions (no matter if he had a choice or not) that Simon made. Also for Simon to be so extremely associated to this ONE thing in his life, to the ONLY choice he had with cutting the rope and the negative shit from others and then people think he also should react a certain way after it happened and after he's had to try and shut it out completely to actually be able to move forward with his life too. The fact that people don't understand why he's had to deal with it like he has just baffles me honestly.
Poor guy. He looked totally traumatized, as anyone would.
The price of a thrilling life MUST be paid anyway mate . . . .
seems like insurance of some sort pushed this
Loved Ruby Blue. Somewhere I have Paradise, cassette only album of outakes.
There is a Comfort and Trust in watching Joe. He SHARES the details of his Trauma. Both Factual, Professionally ..and Very Viscerally. The world could learn ALOT from this Man. He Never plays the VICTIM. He takes Accountability for his OWN actions. Anything he writes, or posts..I will watch.
