Is This The Ultimate Earth-Sheltered Passive Home?
In this video, we’ll dive into the fascinating world of Earthships. These are innovative, sustainable homes designed to operate completely off the grid. Earthships are built using natural and recycled materials, featuring unique designs that harness the power of the sun, wind, and rain. I’ll explain how these self-sufficient structures utilise passive solar heating and cooling, thermal mass, and rainwater harvesting to create a comfortable living environment while minimising their ecological footprint.
I believe these remarkable homes can truly inspire a more sustainable future!

130 KWh/sq meter? Seems pretty high. My current apartment is using about 42 KWh/sq m/day... Efficiencies vary, and this is a nicer, newer, more efficient building. Perhaps she's referring to buildings built 50 years ago, etc.. Either way, the point that if we build with efficiency in mind, and build long lasting buildings, we can save both energy and building waste over time. This is very similar to Earthships from Michael Reynolds out of Taos, NM. His philosophy is simple: Architects are the ones that can save this planet, by simply using more intelligent designs. Bravo Sara! We need more of this!

I had an architect who built his Biophilic home in a similar style in a nice neighborhood here in Tampa, FL. The city made him build a large fence to cover the home because they thought it a blight and out of place. It was back in the 80s. Today they’d probably be fine with it. It was surprisingly comfortable inside even during out hot humid summers.

If u want to drop the temperature in the classroom further, you can make the walls at around 1 feet thick..this will prevent the outside heat to penetrate the thick wall..apart from.that, you can make wind holes at around one feet above the ground in the walls. This is because, cooler air is heavier than hot air. With these holes, the cooler air can travel into the classroom, cooling it n push the hot air ( which is lighter) up to the open roof..if your roof is not designed as such, you can still make air holes above your windows to let the hot air out n circulate d air in the room.

You don't need to put toxic tires in your walls. Build rammed earth walls with no tires in them, easy, fast, cheap. Earthship are expensive to build and very, very labor intensive. And not one earthship ever built will ever produce enough food for one person let alone a family. David Easton on rammed earth is the best.
