The 78th was disbanded after the French and Indian was but Fraser's Highlanders were raised again for service in the Revolutionary War as the 71st Regiment of Foot. As with the 78th, they established themselves as an outstanding regiment at least equal to the Black Watch.

Thank you, Mr. Young, for this important bit of Scottish history. Although I have visited the UK before, I will be visiting Scotland for the first time in July/August this year (2024). I have been reading a tome on Scotland's history (Alistair Moffat's), and it's been a challenge. As an American (with British ancestry), our history begins so much later, and so I've dipped into videos and other media to assist in assimilating the English/French/Protestant/Catholic conflicts in Scotland's earlier history. Yes, some of my ancestors were Scots -- my grandfather, born in Iowa, was named "Bonnie Earl," and I discovered my unusual surname is a town on Shetland (likely from the Vikings). The Scottish public education system in the 1700's is particularly impressive. I worked for a year at a Presbyterian mission hospital in rural Malawi, where the nearest town was "Blantyre," named after Livingstone's birth place. Every such mission had a hospital, a church, and a school. Best wishes!

Being a Pennsylvanian with predominantly Scots-Irish surnames and dna, I would imagine there’s a large amount of us over here that would love hearing about reasons for Scots to Ulster and Scots to colonies in 17-18th centuries. We don’t have much surviving records and rely on a North American perspective on figuring out when our families hit the continent. Thanks for your content.

Excellent video, I was born in the Howe of Fife , educated in Fife, and went to work in Glenrothes New Town. As a boy we would get the ferry to Dundee or Edinburgh. I wish we had been taught more comprehensively about the history of Fife in school. Thank you for sharing.

I went to catholic school but always been a free thinker… all we got taught about was the jacobites but no context given… Nothing mentioned about the Scottish enlightenment or innovation I honestly feel cheated of a proper education

My maiden name is Shaw and my paternal side of the family came to the colonies in or around 1650 and were known as shipping entrepreneurs. I’m reconnecting with those from the homeland. Enjoyed listening to your podcast. ❤

Britain from 1800 to 1900. 20,000 Waterwheels decreased in number. Windmills decreased in number. Englishman Thomas Newcomen's 1,500 Atmospheric Pumps disappeared. Scotsman James Watt's 500 Steam Engines and their descendants increased in number to 10,000,000 !!! For every SINGLE Waterwheel in 1800 we now had an additional 500 Steam Engines in 1900 !!! And you don't need a river of flowing water for each one either, so they can be sited anywhere! That's an increase in Power Capacity and so, for Productive Capacity for the whole country of 500 times. That WAS the Industrial Revolution! It's never happened before and I would say it won't happen again. The Industrial Revolution was the result of only one single Invention. James Watt's Invention of the world's first PRACTICAL Steam Powered Engine. Nothing to do with those " 27 Inventions of Industrial Revolution " etc.etc.etc. Also nothing to do with Spinning and Weaving, that was the result of unfair trading practices.

Gordon, I seem to remember reading somewhere, that when the Rutherfords lost their clan chief, they then joined in with the Hume clan. Am I mistaken?

Confusion for me aswell. I can trace the family to Sauche Clackmannan in around 1840... I cant find any earlier records here in Australia.. it sounds like they may have been from the original Frasers?

I lived in the borders of Scotland for five years and it was diabolical nothing but Alcholics and druggies who are trying to scam people out of their money and the drug deals that go on down Hawick High street in front of police cars with the police watching it go on and the police just ignore it going on Galashiels is not any better people just want to stay away from these area the baptist Church in Hawick has a Yorkshire woman who is trying to scam people out of money diabolical people need to stay away from these areas

a HUGE eye opener for me to de-romanticise the idea of life in the Clan Era was visiting the Highland Folk Museum nr Aviemore in the 2000s - I explored black house reconstructions & got a feel for what living in one would be like - pretty grim & my conclusion was? - 'I'd have been on the road South ASAP' ... even though, as a keen outdoors-man, I do love the Highlands - following that thought further - you can well see that even a crowded tennement in Glasgow or Edinburgh with a shared toilet, etc would be a real step UP in living conditions & opportunity - even though, in my lifetime, Gorbals tennements, etc are seen as horribly deprived - in the 17 & 1800s - they would have been a real step up.

Gordon, I am an *ARMSTRONG (Gaelic Name: Mac Ghillielàidir.)* We are PROUD SCOTS. When back in Scotland in 1998, and now an adult (I was a 14 year old when we emigrated to Australia) I walked the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. I was looking for the plaque to James V as I had promised my ancestor Johnnie Armstrong I would exact revenge on that *GRACELESS FACE* for the 30 ARMSTRONGS, ELLIOTS and Other associated Clans whom James murdered using a ruse. When I did find the Heraldic Panel at Entrance to Holyrood Palace I spat upon it. When my son learned of what I had done, he said to me: "Dad, I wonder if James realised over 500 years ago that a descendant of Johnnie ARMSTRONG would find his plaque and spit on it." My comment in response was:: "I have done my duty to my ancestor."

I am from clan YOUNG. I saw in another video that they lived along the southeast border with the Kerr Clan. When I did a database search for the surname young in Scotland today, the highest population was still in the same area. Great video, thank you!

I learned this poem many a years ago. My teacher of English studied in Edinbourgh, with a scholarship of the Hungarian Reformed Church. He there became an admirer of the Scottish, bringing attention to the similarities of the history of the two nations. Now, today we celebrate 44 years of marriage with my husband, and I wanted to send my him this poem, that's how I discovered your video. Thank you so much for the comments - this poem is a gem!
