Nortent 2024 Vern 1 Winter snowstorm test
A late winter snowstorm was a great opportunity to test out the 2024 Nortent Vern 1. The tent performed flawlessly with the overnight temperature dipping down to -15C, 5F. Ventilation was definitely the key to keeping condensation to a minimum.
The snow loading was excellent as due to the frigid temperatures and wind gusts, it just slid off the tent. lesson learned on this winter wild camp, GoPro cameras do not like the cold. Bring extra batteries. I can't comment on the effects of wind on the tent as in this forest, it's very sheltered.
All of the gear I use is paid for by me, including this tent and the Vern 1.
Winter wild camping is inherently dangerous if you don't have the knowledge, equipment, and experience.
Hypothermia and frostbite are real risks and have to be taken seriously.

    Do you feel like changing the poles makes a big difference on the sturdiness of the tent? Thinking of changing mine as well.

    • @BrokenVikingOutdoors
      @BrokenVikingOutdoors Před 2 měsíci

      It definitely feels more rigid, but having used it quite a few times now, I think it needs to be reconfigured on the ends, as that is where the forces tend to want to push it in. The guyline attachment points need to be looked at on the ends too, as they don't seem to provide much strength at the height they are. Caveat, I haven't used it in gale force winds yet, as where I wild camp, it's heavily forested which gives some degree of wind protection. Apart from a potential tree landing on me of course. It feels stronger on the sides, which is the opposite of what it should be. But to sum up, adding thicker poles or doubling up is relatively cheap insurance when out in harsh conditions. Still a great tent and has its purpose, but myself and others have noticed the same issues, so It's not just heresay. The Hilleberg BL Soulo would be the one for harsh, exposed high elevations at this point. I do hope Nortent takes a look as they have in the past with end user suggestions etc. I'm not abandoning the brand as others have, and a Gamme 6PC hot tent will be my next tent from them.
