Awesome overview! Thanks! Questions: 1. What combinations of your top 5 mods do you like to use in a given game? I'm assuming that some might not work well together as they combine multiple possible victory conditions/objectives and create confusion (e.g. Regalia and Tenka)? 2. Do you have a link for the battle board with cavalry class shown at 16:50? 3. Your thoughts on permanently fortified provinces? And if you use them, in combination with what other mods? Thanks again!
Thank you for the response. 1.You are correct. Never try to overplay the mods. Usually I present the options to the group and we decide by committee. Recently it's been strategy cards with Tenka. The game before that it was cavalry with terrain map. I remember one game we just played Regalia and I thought it was fun. 2.I can't find my file at the moment! I hope I didn't delete it. It might be on a thumb drive somewhere. I will have to look for it. If I find it I will upload it to BGG. 3.The terrain map and fortification mods I find are harder to get to the table. Recently I've been playing with casual gamers and they really don't care too much about strategy and odds they are more about just rolling some dice and pushing pieces -around which is fine too. Like you suggested before ,I suggest picking one or two mods per game. MIx and match combo's. You'll want to play more games that way! Thanks again.
I graduated from high school in 1986 so this was a fun watch. I was a punk in a small town in the Midwest US.
What website did you use for this?
basic google search "TripleA" and it should come right up.
Looking forward to your mods or house rules video
Great video could you do one from the Japanese perspective as well?
I also noticed at 42:55 you moved three spaces with your navy I thought the rule was could only move 3 with the naval base if it was on the noncombat move and your side controlled the naval bases at the starting and ending location? Just trying to clarify for my own understanding of the rule for when I play.
Thank You! Yes I will do another strategy video eventually. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
@@abeberkley-vigil4116 You are right. This is another difference between the official rules and the TripleA setup. The official rules would not allow for the third movement. The Japanese might have survived another turn if this game were played according to the book.
@@goldsack7919 Thank you for responding and really appreciate you doing this. I have had this game for about 20 years and only recently have found a group open to getting into it. I never knew it was on TripleA, and have only played solo against myself. I appreciate the content on this game because it is hard to find.
I lived out in the country and it was so dark I would make up my own lyrics and sing all the way home.😂
I played this in high school 😂
The new game bias is VERY real. I expected more from board game nerds lol.
I have one of the later releases of it for sale. Its in fantastic condition.
Played for years! Looks like some of your cards were from scans from my website devoted to the game. Nice job!
Kind of cool idea, but maybe you can put a way for us to know what the conputer and you're saying. Reading the text is far.
Tengo una modificación del maletín de armas secreta, todos tienen uno al azar y se puede usar una vez en el juego
The classic Axis and Allies Milton Bradley game was clunky and somewhat broken, especially if playing with veteran players. The game can be fixed by using a handful of house rules. These rules balance the game, while still keeping the Allies the stronger faction as they were historically and also these rules can make the game somewhat more historical. Try these rules: 1. Always play with the Russia Restricted rule. 2. Move the factory and AA gun from Karelia to Caucus. 3. Aerial units can only attack submarines when friendly naval units are engaged in the battle. 4. Both Axis countries can place a free factory and AA gun before the start of the game. 5. Neutral nations can never be attacked, moved through or occupied.
Awesome video. Also love Samurai Swords as a system and have played it for many years. Have a group meeting up tomorrow to play... I love introducing it to some new players and seeing the way all the thematic elements mesh "click" into place. Especially 5 players, has a great "knife fight in a phone booth" vibe. Loved hearing about some of those variants, especially the map related ones. May have to try some of them out some day... Thank you for sharing!
Thanks!
I played this game when I was a kid
Sweet!
I have it for sale on Facebook marketplace.
All time favorite game books, the humor was *chef's kiss*
his vision was to enjoy the drugs at the time, witch was marijuana, cocaine, and other recreational drugs as such, it was for inlighten human beings, those that were unafraid of trying something different
I have this for sale on Facebook marketplace.
Great video! I have all of the original MB games, and still enjoy them to this day. Shogun is our favorite. But I always liked Conquest for the theme. Do you have links for the alternative rules and some of the PDF? I know it's been a few years, but I just stumbled upon you today. Cheers!
Thanks! Search Conquest of the Empire 1984 at boardgamegeek.com. Go to the file section. Click on Conquest of the Empire Variants 1.1 for the pdf. You will find a lot of other interesting expansion ideas in other downloadable files. I tried to post a direct link. but it did not work for some reason.
@@goldsack7919 awesome!! Thanks so much!!!
Talk about other grail quest books. I had them somehow in Australia. I managed to collect 5 or 6 for a 2nd hand bookshop in the 90s. One by one I went back and found more. I’ve never spoken with anyone that knows them. So it is cool to hear about the quality holding up and how the gameplay is. I never played them but loved the writing and reading all the options. The imagination and humour. And the illustrations and maps were awesome. The homers odyssey one, 4, was. A favourite. I would love to see rarer ones too. Cool to know the story on the missing ones I never found. I will try to get them and play through at least one some time.
I hope to get around to reviewing more of them. I did 1 and 2 so far. If the 2nd video can get around 100 views it might be time for book 3! Thanks for watching.
Thanks! I posted some comments on the BBG site (where one can watch this without annoying commercials!) Well done!
I know this is a year old but have you ever played the Total War computer game Shogun or the better versions Shogun 2? As n avid Shogun player back in the day it had many similarities and is a great game for a computer game.
I haven't played them unfortunately. I want to. But I remember playing Lords of the Rising Sun by Cinema-ware on the Commodore Amiga!
Truly the dark souls 2 of axis and allies
I can't find this Wogan guy on BGG. Can you link it for us?
yes under the thread titled "Looking To Balance This Game" boardgamegeek.com/thread/377747/looking-balance-game
I know a cool table top game that was so much fun. You used these figurines with round bases that had an HP meter you could twist. You set up equal armies and went to war. First one to run outta troops won. Called Mage Knights
I have this game for sale if your interested its in fantastic shape, the box is alittle warped at this point, but the pieces/money and cards are in fantastic shape.
Top notch game. All the silly business you get in risk is sorted out.
Nice to be one of the earlier ones here! Your videos are great, and I particularly love your explanations of retrofitting old games with improved mechanics or board additions etc. I also like to switch up bad rules for better ones, as I think sometimes a game's concept is better than the poorly implemented rules. I've always wondered why old game rules were written like some hardware installation manuals. Just throwing out random suggestions here, but I'd like to see your take on larger questions like what game has a good balance of enjoyment vs number of pieces to set up, or what game has a good balance of strategy and luck, or how you feel about games where you buy 1 unit (risk) vs buying multiple units (A&A), etc. Maybe something on board gaming in the Netherlands? You might be the first board gaming expat channel if you'd accept such a niche haha
Thank you for your support. Hopefully I can cover some of those larger questions in future videos.
Congrats on 100! I think there were maybe 20 or 30 when I subbed? The Milton Bradley Game Master series overview videos were absolutely OUTSTANDING. Also really liking the coverage of other vintage games like Masterpiece and Power Barrons. Goldsack has quickly become one of my favorite gaming channels. Looking forward to more of your awesome content!
Thanks! I wish I could make more videos at a faster pace but ....work and life in general..ahh well. I really appreciate the kind words. Thanks again.
Keep on doing what you are doing🤟 It's appreciated 💪
thanks!
I like it, it looks like it makes it more wild and competitive. How about a Death Race 2000 version? It would be full of grim humor and mayhem.
That's a really good idea.
Awesome review. I never knew there were so many variants.
Thank you.
I crushed playing this the other day. I don't think we played the split rule correctly. My partner's family have a rule that when a stock splits, you not only get double the stock, you can sell all of your stock of that type including the shares you just got for $2/share. THEN the price goes to $1/share (par). So when Indust split i got 1500 extra shares and then sold all of them for $6,000, then bought 3,000 more indust shares at $1/share and used the rest of the cash to buy other shares.
I like some of the mods. It is a surprisingly engaging yet simple game.
I totally agree with you.
Mille Bornes is a fun game. I like your mod.
Thank you!
@@goldsack7919 You’re welcome. My sister had the game with the old art when we were kids. In the 80s, while serving in the navy, I found an unopened copy for sale at a swap meet. The exact same version that had the old art and a green plastic tray. I bought it, took it to the ship and taught the guys in my work center how to play. It was wildly popular. I transferred a year later taking my nearly worn out deck with me. Keep making these interesting videos. Your content is superlative.
Thanks again.I still make videos although I am just a part time content creator. Long gaps between uploads is a thing unfortunately but I keep at it.
I played this game with some frequency in the early 70s. The board we used was much different!
Interesting! Do tell. What were some of the differences?
Spam
The other question is how much is it broken by if in a game of 300 pieces, the number of units needed to fix it is less than 10. It’s pretty close, right
I’ve played. I play tested with Larry. All rules are really strong suggestions. Free your mind. Make it work. Think about what could be have fun and don’t always think about the W. Do you always think about history!
I agree. I will always have fun with A&A Europe.
Do you have all the 8 books?
As a kid I had the first 6. However nowadays you can pdf them if you know where to look! I might review more of them in the future.
@@goldsack7919 i have books 1 2 4 on my bookshelf
I have all 8 books...this series is unique in being both too easy and too hard at the same time...!!...
Thanks
thanks man. made a playlist with "other people's stuff." keep it up.
Believe it or not, but I've never seen A&A 1941, and know very little about it, maybe you can answer a question for me? Is America fully in the war from the start of the game, or do they have to wait for Japanese aggression against its territory or units before they can engage in the Pacific? In real life, before December 1941 and Pearl Harbour, they didn't get into firefights with the Japanese, while in the Atlantic they shipped tons of supplies to the British, their firefights against the German Navy were limited too. I'm just wondering if this is covered in the game?
A&A 1941 is stripped down to the bare bones. There are no special restrictions or politics in the game.
Stupid karmics 😂😂
